Holden helped me develop a healthy cynicism for the world.

I thank him for that.

Wrapped up Catcher in the Rye last night

Strange book indeed, really, kenny the kangaroo is not kidding.

salinger does not think to highly of the average joe, to say the least. also, the portrayals of teenage girls was quite comical and spot on.

I read two recently that I loved. A Captains Duty and Not Without Hope.

Both of which are non fiction and are very exciting, suspenseful books. Can anyone reccommend other books like this? For some reason I can really only read non-fiction. I just find books a million times more interesting knowing they are true. Also not looking for romance, something exciting like the previously mentioned.

I finished The Help last night. Very enjoyable and well written. Not sure about the movie, but the book was really good.

Now on to The Final Storm, by Jeff Shaara.

Finished Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman, a collection of short stories by him.

He continues to impress me. The collection was humorous, disturbing, and intriguing. Definitely my favorite author. I'm disappointed I only have his graphic novels left to read of his work.

I'd suggest Untimely Meditations or Human, All Too Human.

I read this book 12 years ago when I didn't really understand much about how the world operates (especially epistemologically). Reading this now again with fresh eyes I am even more blown away by De Toqueville's work. This may be the most important book ever written about the American experiment.

Finished the Game of Thrones Series; cannot for the next book. Surprisingly I thought Dragons was the weakest of the bunch (but still quite good mind you). On to The Great Anglo-Boer War by Byron Farwell detailing the causes, actions and results of this often overlooked conflict that heralded the beginning of the end of the British Empire.

I've gone through King, Tolkien and Martin; any other advise for another epic fantasy series? I saw the wheel of time but didn't know if I wanted to make that commitment......

Reading Timothy Zahn's Conqueror's series and it is also very very good. Took me forever to find the second book, in fact couldn't find it in any brick and mortar establishment.

Gaiman is my gf's favorite, as well. I started American Gods a few months ago, got about half way through, and then forgot about it. Might have to start that one over.

Now reading James McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom, which some have said is the best single volume book on the Civil War.

Very good so far, and I didn't know the south tried to annex Cuba several times before the Civil War started.

I'm posting this here because I am afraid of spoilers in the George RR Martin thread, but I am working through Book 4 (Feast for Crows). What an incredible series. I think it has just become my favorite "epic" fantasy series, replacing Dark Tower (which is also awesome)

About to start The Green Mile. Friend had the five mini books put out by King, so I'm reading it like that.

I read the Feather Men probably faster than any other book in my life. It is the basis for the movie Killer Elite coming out next week.

The book/film bills itself on being "based on a true story." True or not it was really awesome. It's about several assassinated British soldiers, and how a team of SAS operators handles the assassins on their own.
