If you are looking to just get a just little bigger and super toned i would suggest a full body workout every other day. I had great success with that type of routine, I did super sets where you hit your muscles and the counter muscle one after the other, so you would do you Hams and Quads one after the other Bi's and Tri's one after another.

This isn't a get hugh routine but will defienty make a noticeable difference in your shape and tone.

I also at my peak of working out used Creatine and a powdered potein that helped in getting a bit bigger.

To lose fat, 1 or 2 days lifting, 4 or 5 days cardio. Opposite if you are looking to build muscle. If you are looking to build muscle you have to eat alot and eat the right things.

Tif the selectechs are awesome. Honestly I could get away with them and an incline bench and do almost a full body workout.

If you bought the dumbbells all separate they would run you like $800. It's nice cause I can incline bench 45, curl 35, and my GF can do her squats with 10 and curls with 15.
That's good info, thanks. And that $800 for a full range of dumbells doesn't factor in storage space, either.

Does the width of the bar ever become a factor? They use them in the P90X+ videos, and they look a little bit unwieldy. I can't really demo them cos all the local sporting goods stores have the things on lock down, so you can't pick them up out of their cradle thingy.
They won't let you demo them before you drop ~$400 on them? tough! I got mine @ Dick's Sporting goods. The width of the bar is noticeably wider but I don't feel a major difference. My hands are bigger though so it's actually more comfortable of a grip.

I'm gonna have to start running and that guide may come in quite handy. I hate running but I'm gonna be starting the fire academy and they run all the time. Im 5'8'' and 227. So I need to lose some weight.
I was going to the gym 3 days a week and would do 30 minutes at 60 steps a min on the stair climber and then do another 30 on the elliptical. Played street hockey once a week and would lift once or twice a week. Felt better but really didn't even drop a pound.
I may start the P90x stuff. Problem with that is it becomes hard to do everyday because of my schedule but I'll try.

I need to do something.
Everything you do helps. If you are doing the work at the gym and you are not seeing results then you will have to take a much closer look at your diet. It's natural to want to eat more after boosting your metabolism with exercise. Try to set a real goal of eliminating bad foods and reducing your overall calorie intake by 10%, consistently. It will be a little irritating at first, but you won't miss it after a week or so and then you will start to see some real results. Also, congrats on getting into the fire academy and thanks in advance for the ffuture work you will be doing. Don't forget, your fitness level can save lives in the future, including your own.
Thanks for the advice. I have been trying to count calories and eat healthier. I don't think I am eating enough because after about 2 weeks the eating goes out the window and I eat bad. I think calculating what I eat now and subtracting 10% over time might work out better.

Thanks for the congratulations. I'll be on the medic units all the time but they make us go through the accademy because we have to be part of the union in order to qualify for a pension. Fine with me, I've been fighting fire for 6 years at a busy vollie house and I'm on my game. It should be a breeze. Besides the running, I hate running. But I don't want to be the fat out of shape medic that walks through someones door. I just shake my head seeing all those firefighters an medics that smoke like chimneys. Way to be an example.

So I did the running thing today. Ran for 2 minutes, walked for 1.5 minutes for 25 or so minutes. I forgot how bad I hate treadmills. I get some crazy pain in my shins. Maybe I need to actually buy a running shoe? Any recommendations?
KSwiss tubes, what I wear. Great shoes.

I'm a sucker for the Reebok zigs. Been through about 4 pair in about 2 years. One pair was damaged when I was doing trail running after two weeks, so I've since decided not to buy another pair of the one that are basically a nylon mesh. Good thing Dick's had the shoe warranty at the time (which has since gone away). One pair I absolutely destroyed on a Warrior Dash run. Not sure what I did, but when I finished cleaning all of the mud from my shoe, there was a nice hole on the instep on my right foot. The shoes were pretty beat anyways, so I'm sure I didn't do them any favors that day. :P I'm down to two pair now: a white pair that I rarely wear and a pair that are similar to seahawks colors (grey and bright green).

Like the K-Swiss, I don't feel the impact in my shins from running as much as I did before. I would want to try a low-profile shoe, but IIRC New Balance are made for narrow feet.

New Balance are all I can usually find. They are definitely not made for narrow feet. You just have to get an E, 2E, or 4E (what I usually get) width.

Careful to anyone on the Creatine, because I am a fairly lean body to begin with and I tended to get cramping, early fatigue and more muscle strains in the legs during the periods I tried it. Prior to using it, I had very few instances in many years of pulls or strains in my legs. I especially noticed this playing Hockey, so I stopped using it and everything seemed to return to normal. My initial goal was to see if I could get faster strength gains from the weight training I was doing.

I think it may be different for different body types, but if you are a lean muscle kind of build and are only looking to get stronger, I am not sure it is a great supplement.

I didn't know people still worked out without doing supersets. Only way I ever work out. As far as intake, I eat a good meal an hour or two before working out and then 15 or so minutes after I drink a protein shake. This tends to minimize my soreness in the morning. I basically eat dinner at like 6:30, workout at 8-8:30 for about an hour or so and then go to bed at 11 or so.

Doesn't that get boring after awhile?
Are you like me and after 3-4 weeks of a workout, get "bored" and start losing any pump?

For running shoes I recommend going to a running store and let them look at your stride. Usually they will get you on a treadmill and then look to see if you over or under pronate and from there recommend a type of shoe. I had a lot of knee pain until I did this and found out I am a severe over pronator. I bought a pair of motion control shoes and have been running fairly consistantly since. The downside is that since they take time with you to look at your stride you feel like you should buy the shoe from them even though you can get it much cheaper at other stores.

As far as weight loss, i think what you eat >>>>>>>>> exercise/cardio.
You want to lose weight you need to change you eating habits. Even then it's tough.
Habit is the key word. Don't think of diet and exercise as something you're going to do temporarily until you get to your perfect weight and health. It is something that you need to integrate into your daily routine.

I don't know for sure because i've never used it, but i think thats the stuff that makes your body process protein more efficiently. I think it seems to be something more for someone who is looking for bulk as opposed to strength or fitness. Most of these things seem that way to me actually. I wouldn't take protein if I consumed enough of it in a day for my body to properly recover from workouts.
