i'm reading Logicomix. graphic novel following bertrand russell around about the search for truth through logic, math, philosophy - with a theme of logic -> madness or madness -> logic
it's easy-going and a simple read (being a graphic novel)

Finished up Neptune's Inferno: The U.S. Navy at Guadalcanal by James D. Hornfischer. If you have any interest in military history (and particularly U.S. naval history), Hornfischer's books are all must-reads. This book covers the desperate work of the U.S. Navy in 1942-43 to defend its precarious position on Guadalcanal against repeated Japanese counterattacks. At this point in the war, the U.S. was already down a couple of its vital aircraft carriers, and it lost two more during the overall Guadalcanal campaign. With new carriers still some time away from completion, the Navy defended Guadalcanal in good-old ship-on-ship gun engagements, many of them night battles. So many ships were sunk in the repeated battles that the waters north of Guadalcanal were quickly nicknamed "Ironbottom Sound." Hornfischer does a great job of covering the action, and the result is a gripping read. Strongly recommended.

The first two were really good but I definitely enjoyed the first one better, too. Not a fan of the third.60sixx wrote:Just finished "Catching Fire" (second book of Hunger Games series)....Enjoyed both, though I liked the first one better. Eager to start Mockingjay tonight.

Got a Kindle for Christmas and have read seven books in January (being sick for most of the month has given me plenty of reading time...)
Water for Elephants
Treasure Island
Moneyball
Unbroken
11/22/63
The Rogue
Skin Tight
11/22/63, Unbroken, and Moneyball were the best of the lot.

It's amazing how much stuff is available for free for the Kindle. More than you will ever be able to read.
Anyway, McCarthy's Border Trilogy is awesome and made me want to reread the complete Faulkner again. However, next up for me are Richard Stark's Parker novels.

Have you seen the movie Moneyball? Wasn't sure how well the book would translate, but it was quite good.Admin wrote:Got a Kindle for Christmas and have read seven books in January (being sick for most of the month has given me plenty of reading time...)

I am! I love those books. Always reliably entertaining. I think a new one is due out in Feb/Mar? I pre-ordered it on my Kindle.Chefpatrick871 wrote:Im late to this thread but any johnathan kellerman fans on the board?? I really enjoy the alex Delaware novels. Good reads.

Almost done with - Blue Highways: A Journey into America
Didn't expect to like it so much, but what a fun book to read. Gives a nice slice of pure Americana.
I need to read it before I go on any trip or vacation.

always wondered about that blue highways book. is that the one about the guy who avoided interstates altogether and only drove on the little blue roads that show up on maps?
kenny the kangaroo took a trip to the book shoppes and bougght the following books last night:
Barbarians at the gates
Nothing Else like it in the world-about the transcontinental railroad
and that book about the relief pitcher guy that is trying to make it into the big leagues.

Just finished the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. It was awesome.
The magic system was different and interesting...It's not a terribly complicated read, but it does provide a bit of mystery and intrigue. Definitely would recommend.
Starting on Glen Cook's The Black Company now.

I have about 150 more pages of Tom Jones, this is the fastest i've ever gone through a 900 page book before (started 2 saturdays ago). This book makes me want to read Barry Lyndon next.

Finished Angels In Irons. Good book. Extremely violent. Makes most of the other books I've read look like Disney.

Re: Current book being read/just finished
Read the hunger games yesterday. Really liked it, been a while since I read a book in one day. Going to try and finish off Blood Meridian. Started out real good, then I had a hard time with it. For some reason, I can't sit down and read this at big intervals.
