Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I would LOVE to do this but really where I am it is a dangerous undertaking. My boss rides a lot and I asked him if he ever had any close calls and I was a little shocked when he said he was hit 3 times! I live about 13 miles from my lab/office, and most of it there are practically no shoulders and high volume of traffic.TheHammer24 wrote:More people should bike to and from work. Biking is so liberating. I started doing it here (Chicago), which is remarkably flat and super remarkably flat by Pittsburgh's terms. That being said, I bet biking to work in many instances is quicker than driving or commuting depending on where you live, it's a lot of fun, and it's great exercise.

Yeah, he's pretty strong. He won the shot put world championship 3 times in a row. Finished 3rd in the 1988 Olympics where his mark would have won gold in every other Olympics in history (the gold & silver medalist winners that year are the only two people to have ever thrown over 23 meters).bh wrote:i started watching that and i was like, yeah he's strong and what not, but hopping over those walls and then up those stairs like nothing was likeTheHammer24 wrote:That guy has some pretty average leg strength.![]()

Did a full hour of yoga for the first time in ....well, a long time.
Very relaxed, but will be heading to the bathroom for the rest of the afternoon.
All of the twisting really does a number on you.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I think I finally found a decent exercise plan
Day 1: 30-45 minutes, moderate cardio
Day 2: Strength training, 10 minutes or so of intense cardio
Rinse repeat until Day 7, which is a rest day. I like getting the intense cardio in after lifting at the gym. 10 minutes at 7.2 mph on the treadmill is another 170 calories.

There's a school of thought that says if you're doing intense weight training you don't need cardio.shafnutz05 wrote:I think I finally found a decent exercise plan

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Shaf, you don't need cardio. Cardio is stupid for what you want. You want to put on muscle to improve your metabolism. Thats what weight training is for... cardio and other forms of endurance workouts are for people who want performancestopper40 wrote:There's a school of thought that says if you're doing intense weight training you don't need cardio.shafnutz05 wrote:I think I finally found a decent exercise plan

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
If you are looking to lose weight, i find cardio the way to go. Just from experience, i lose weight on cardio, my metabolism goes through the roof on cardio. I tried to lose weight on heavy lifting and don't lose the weight like i normally do on cardio. I do love when i was in a lifting\gaining phase. You can eat a ton while building muscle. Weight training is alot more fun than cardio i have to admit, if you can lose weight while lifting go for it. The workouts i read about this are insane. I like the slow rymthic lifting sessions. These high intensity lifting workouts are insane.

Yeah, I'm trying to bulk but I'm also looking to lose another 10-15 lbs or so. I'm already halfway to where I want to be.

I am under the impression gaining muscle and losing fat simultaneously is impossible you have to bulk then cut, bulk then cut, etcno name wrote:If you are looking to lose weight, i find cardio the way to go. Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
You can still attain both, just not nearly as well as you could by attacking them individually. I think cardio is essential though. If I had to only do one though it would definitely be weight training. Your diet though will dictate your results much more than the exercise. You can erase 60 minutes worth of exercise very quickly unless you stay disciplined with the diet.Godric wrote:I am under the impression gaining muscle and losing fat simultaneously is impossible you have to bulk then cut, bulk then cut, etcno name wrote:If you are looking to lose weight, i find cardio the way to go. Well to lose weight you have to eat less calories about 2000 a day and exercise. Now any exercise will do, but from what i read cardio is a little more efficeint at burning fat. Although you can find articles that will say different.
To build muscle, you have to lift heavy and eat alot of calories about 3000 a day. Alot of calories should be protein.
So logically if you want to lose weight and build muscle how to you adjust your diet (calories) to get both accomplished. if it can be done the calorie game would have to be perfect, and the perfect ammout of cardio to lifting would have to be performed. A very hard line to walk. Alot easier to do one or the other.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
From what I've read (which isn't much), the most beneficial cardio is aerobic, vice anaerobic. I believe aerobic is typically 60 - 80% of your maximum heart rate. During aerobic, your body is producing energy by burning fat with oxygen intake. Above 80% max heart rate, you're getting into anaerobic and the body is actually relying on itself (carbs, muscles) to burn and provide the fuel. In general, I think they say you typically burn more calories during aerobic exercise, and more of those calories come from fat, as opposed to anaerobic. I've always wondered if this is because you have a tendency to exercise longer (i.e. can sustain the pace longer) during aerobic exercise, or if there is something physical about aerobic that burns more calories. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.no name wrote:Well to lose weight you have to eat less calories about 2000 a day and exercise. You need to read 'The Hierarchy of Fat Loss': http://www.t-nation.com/readArticle.do?id=1526539Ben Klingston wrote:From what I've read (which isn't much), the most beneficial cardio is aerobic, vice anaerobic.
