Yeah, thats great to hear you are getting back into shape. :thumb:

Rewind 2.5 years ago, When I was sick and I was about 60 pounds heavier and about triple my current BF%. I totally know how it feels to try and get back in shape.

I should elaborate on my previous response: I only brought up your service because I am interested in learning more about the Coast Guard... I'm thinking about signing up. My brother always tells me to join (He was USMC)...

Very awesome Godric. Also, joining the service is very admirable.

Shaft, you said you have high LDLs right? Regular exercise is the best way to increase you HDLs as I am sure your doctor has told you. Kudos on the running. Keep it up! Red wine is also good.

Yep, doing lots of cardio and drink a glass of red wine a day now. Godric, I'll answer any CG-related questions you have via PM, but IMO, it's the most "fun" branch to get into. I would say it also comes with the least likelihood of being shipped to a combat zone, but that is probably the USAF.

I stopped drinking fruit juices a while ago. WAY too much sugar. I read somewhere that if you have a glass of orange juice, it's not that far removed from drinking regular soda because of the obscene amount of sugar in it. Better off just getting it straight from the source.

You might not see combat, but I'd wager that the CG routinely carries out more dangerous missions during peacetime than any other branch.

And I'd add that the main reason why your likelihood of facing combat in the USAF is minimal is because that's the only service where it is primarily officers who go into combat, while enlisted stay behind. (There are obviously exceptions to that - para-rescue guys, FACs, etc - but by and large it's the guys O2 - O6 who get shot at.)

Yeah tif, you hit the nail on the head. The CG's peacetime missions, which include drug/migrant interdiction, search and rescue, port security etc all certainly carry a significant risk of danger. You are also right on with the fact that the vast majority of fighter jocks are middle grade officers.

What was the craziest mission you were ever on?

Yeah, even though its not mainly geared towards combat and conflict the Coast Guard is still a branch of the US Armed Forces

I have a good friend that is a JTAC, the coolest Pogue I've ever met and thats probably because he goes on patrols like every other grunt :P

I always said if I was going to sign up, I'd go Marine Inf like my brother.. but he always says I should join the Coast Guard and he has his reasons

+1 or should I say (-)57 for MyFitnessPal, this app has helped me go from 270 to 213 and I started in late January and took a 1 month break. This app has literally probably added 10-20 years to my life expectancy. And it was free. It will teach you the value of watching what you eat while simultaneously encouraging you to exercise.

Holy crap this sounds like a customer testimonial.

Nice job. Yeah, I can't imagine not logging my exercise/nutrition details. That's like driving a car with no speedometer, gas gauge, or oil gauge. What feels right might be wrong.

Congrats Justin! I downloaded MyFitnessPal when I first started my diet/exercise plan about 4 months ago. I am down about 23 lbs, from 205 to 182. Still want to lose about 15 more. It is truly a great app, because it tracks EVERYTHING in food, not just calories. For someone like me that has some cholesterol issues, it's nice keeping an eye on saturated fat/cholesterol, and holding myself accountable.

I used to hate running too, until I downloaded MapMyRun. Between that and Pandora, I love going on runs now. Technology is a great thing.

Getting back into running now. I have a Garmin GPS watch ordered. Wish they had these gadgets like 10 years ago when I was crazy about running haha. I'll have to take a look at this fitness app.

This is a great app that I use myself. Keep in mind that the calories per day that is calculates for you is on the very low end. It told me I should be at 2000 calories a day with my "sedentary" job. That's much lower than it should be. I should be near 3000 a day when I account for SoldierFit 3-4 times a week. Im still aiming for about 2000 as I've hit a plateau. According to the app I should be under 300lbs in 2 weeks. Haven't been under 300 since before high school.

Feels so good getting into shape.

I set my activity level to "Active", since I try to go for a 20-30 minute walk during the workday and I exercise/take the stairs and stuff.

If you have an office job, simply standing up during conference calls rather than sitting makes a difference.

I might try that since I do a bunch of walking around the warehouse and there is no elevator.

You burn about 1800 a day just surviving. Add the 1200 or so with SoldierFit and I burn 3000 3-4 days a week. Gotta add a nice long walk or 2 mile run the other days.

Here's basically what got me down to <10%bf:

8:00am (Wake-up):
~As soon as I get out of bed I look out the window and let the sunlight hit me in the face for about 2 minutes. (This has been shown to increase free release testosterone by 40%, You can feel the difference)
~Meal
Quarter Cup of Brown Rice made in Rice Cooker overnight + Grilled Chicken tenderloins I keep in the fridge 24/7 + A greens salad I make
I also take a Probiotic

8:30am:
Run to Gym (2miles)

I do 2 routines. I just alternate them every other day, both routines are full body circuits that are all compound exercises.

I don't use benches, I use the balance ball.

10:00am:
Run back to my house
Make a protein shake (50g of top quality Whey Protein) The absolutely best protein IMO =
Spoiler:
Image
throw on my swimsuit and swim 50 lengths

I do that everyday

1. Don't forget to subtract your bmr calories from the ones burned during exercise (aka, you would have already burned x number of calories doing nothing if you weren't soldier fitting).

2. 1200 calories?!? Not sure what you are doing, but be careful going with any estimates. Wear a heart rate monitor to get the real data.

If your doing compound exercises with hardly any rest period... 1200 calories is certainly doable but that'd take 1 1/2 hours....

Depending on your age, weight and average HR

Yeah, I burn about 800-850 calories running for an hour (at my usual 10 minute pace). So I suppose it's possible.

SoldierFit is a full body 60 minute workout. If you have heard of Crossfit it is very similar. Several people have worn calorie counters during their workout and the total burned has ranged from 800-1600 calories.

It's not just about how many calories you take in but WHERE you are getting these calories from. 100 calories from a lean piece of beef are different than 100 calories from oatmeal.
