Yeah, I burn about 800-850 calories running for an hour (at my usual 10 minute pace). So I suppose it's possible.
And I burn 900-1100 in 60 mins on the elliptical. Level 16 resistance, ain't no joke. I usually lose 4-6 lbs of water weight each workout. If I weighed 170 though, that number would be significantly lower, probably 600-800/hr

I had been stuck at 183 for a couple of weeks. Last night, drank a lot of beer and put away a ton of calories. Weigh myself today, 179.6  Sometimes seems like I need to go on a brief binge to get past those plateaus.

I was actually more excited about the fact that my body fat is down to 15.1%. When I started working out regularly at 205, my body fat was right around 19-20%. It's hard for me to believe it's already down that much.

How are u measuring body fat% shaf? I'm only asking because I want to start keeping track of mine and I'm not sure what the best method is? Seems there are a couple of good options out there. I think last time I went to a health fair and i did the one where you grip two conductive handles and it measures resistance through your upper body. I was around 25% i believe. 15% seems pretty good.

Hey bh,

Admittedly I only have a body fat/weight combination scale I got at Target (a nicer one). I will say though, it is pretty accurate. I take three readings every time, and they are always consistent.

Ok i kinda hit a wall losing only 2 pounds in the last 2 weeks. Need to shake up the fat loss routine. Old routine was Sunday off. Mon. Tue. 3 mile run Wed. Full body lift Thurs. Fri. 3 mile run Sat. lift.

Thought i would change it up to MWF Lifting and TTS to a 4 mile run. DO you guys think extra lifting will jump start some fat loss. I read alot that it might help, just trying to get past this rut.

Only 5 pounds to go, slow but steady, 4 weeks to the beech.

Is it terrible that I mainly like going to the gym because I get an hour, usually on an elliptical or stationary bike, where I can watch a TV show/movie without being interrupted by co-workers, kids, or wife? I love it - no one talking to me for an hour. And the whole good-for-you thing is an added throw in.

I've read that strength training is greatly underrated in terms of fat loss.

Gypsy, that's definitely not a bad thing. Unfortunately for me, I have to have some kind of pump up music when doing cardio. I can't watch Law and Order or something.

More muscle, the more fat you burn (is that what you just said?)

Yeah, I've been watching either Breaking Bad or Person of Interest. Heart rate stays where it needs to be though.

Yep. Your body needs to burn more and more to sustain the muscle. Therefore, the more muscle you have, the more calories (and fat) you burn just sitting still.

A body builder that weighs 275lbs will have a much faster metabolism than a body builder who weighs 175lbs.

Shaf,

When I went from about 20% bf to my current (Approx 10-11%), I did no cardio.

If you are 100% dedicated to your diet (No sugar, No unnecessary fat intake + Increase intake of Protein (150g atleast), Anti-oxidant, Free form Aminos, Vitamins) you don’t even have to look at the treadmill. It’s a simple case of calories in vs. calories out. If you consume more calories than you burn, you put on weight. If you consume less calories than you burn, you lose weight. You just have to find out how much you burn at rest.

What cardio does is help accelerate burning those calories, but if you are already under your caloric maintenance, there’s no real need to do any cardio, although it can bring about fat losses much faster, you will also find it to be catabolic (muscle-wasting).

So why would I struggle to put on Muscle while doing catabolic cardio with a calorie deficit.... when I can lift and make fast gains and then cut?

Currently, I do cardio because I am not trying to gain muscle or lose weight, I am trying to gain functional strength, endurance and flexiblity

While you are absolutely correct about the calories in vs. calories out, cardio does more than help you burn calories. It strengthens your lungs and heart as well as increases endurance. Aerobic cardio in the form of suicide wind sprints for 20 minutes at the end of a workout will add years to your life.

:thumb: Absolutely. I know this more than you think.

I was a smoker. I took NAC + Vitamin E and swam lengths when I first moved out to California.

My lungs are better than ever.

I'm 72 hours smoke free. Quitting smoking while on a diet is not a great idea but I haven't eaten poorly because of it. I'm 48lbs down, 55 more to go before I hit my "goal".

I've started a weekly personal training session and added MMA classes to my routine. I barely see my family but it's for the best right now. As soon as I get to where I want to be I can scale it back to 6 gym visits a week in the mornings and I can spend my evenings at home with them.

I quit smoking 17 months ago...your appetite will return soon.
So watch out for that.

Not that this is at all the same, but I did a hardcore diet for a weak because someone told me i'd feel amazing afterwards(i did), but at the same time I stopped drinking for a month. That week overlap was horrible.

Did that for 4 months, and it made me appreciate the occasional junk food and beer(s) on the weekend. A month after wandering off the diet and I'm still paranoid about what I eat.

I'm not very happy with my scale. It's accurate for the most part, but it seems like the weight will sometimes go days without changing even a half pound.

The BF% is a crapshoot. Within a 2 day span, I had my BF go from 14% to 29% to 30% to 17%. I just had a weigh-in this weekend and their chart said I was 18% so 17% seems like a somewhat legit number.

I'm currently doing weights at home a couple days a week, tae kwon do 3 times a week, watching calories, taking a daily Mega Man, plus Physio Burn. The other health stuff is going well, but it's the tkd that is really kicking me forward. I'm looking for overall improved fitness and some weight loss; appears to be heading in the right direction. One side effect is that my taste for chocolate/beer has greatly diminished, which helps the calories.

Thanks for all the info on the weight lifting, i am just worried while in a calorie deficiet mode will that cause muscle loss while lifting more weight. I eat 2000 caloires a day, but I do take Whey Protein after i lift to preserve and hopefully rebuild my muscle. Just hoping to maintain my mucle and lose 2 pounds this week.

You all need to get a weighted scale, best investmet i made, It really does give you the most accurate number. I never found a accute way to measure my body fat that was accurate.
