Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
My work is awesome. We exercise once a week and have a kegerator in the office. Can't beat it.
Are there a variety of exercises you can do or just pretty much making the wave?

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I'm sure you can. The total time of the race worries me as well since, in addition to the 13 hills, it's also a 50+ mile race and many of the hills are simply bonus hills in addition to the 13 steep ones. Keep in mind also that the vast majority of riders don't make it up Canton Ave anyway.Troy Loney wrote:I'm definitely not in shape to do the entire thing...but I wonder if you can just go and do whatever your capable of doing.

Here are 20 and I know there are much more than that (just skip ahead to 40 seconds since this person tied in an ad to the video):yubb wrote:My work is awesome. We exercise once a week and have a kegerator in the office. Can't beat it.

This is what my workouts look more like (not me in video):

I love battle ropes. They are probably the most versatile equipment we use.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Any of the bike riders here done the pgh to dc trail? I've been tossing around the idea of doing this in November, I would have a ride back so I wouldn't need to prepare for the round trip....is this feasible to do in a 3-4 day span with a hybrid bike?

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
My boss did it over the summer and another friend back home did it several times. Both of them took about a week to accomplish, and that's with lots of stops and rest.

I've seen anywhere from 2+ days to a week to do a one way trip.
I think I'm more concerned about trail conditions, if I get a flat or hit some rough mud patches i'm pretty f'd.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Tried something new, for me, at the gym today. Instead of doing my reps in standard up/down-in/out fashion, I added a pause. So doing the one-arm dumbbell rows, I'd lift up and pause for 1 second. On the 2nd rep I'd lift up and pause for two seconds, on the third pause for three seconds and so on. It was way difficult, I was sweating bad and my heart rate was up. I love when that happens.
Meanwhile, the kids in my gym were busy doing iPhone curls. I swear, if they lifted weight as much as they BS'd and texted people they'd be huge!

I'm always more amused when I see a trainer texting when he's with a client. I would immediately walk out of a session if a fitness instructor or trainer started sending messages on their phone.

My boss did the run with several friends. I'll see if I can dig up the route that he took. Talked to him yesterday and said the run was closer to 5 days. He spent a day in DC partying afterwards and then drove back on the last day.
The other friend did a solo run and his was definitely a week down. Not sure if he rented a car to get back or if he biked it. He used to do it every summer, but with kids and stuff I don't think he's made the trip since 2009.
I think the second friend has to change a flat once or he had a patch kit or something.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I hate that, and it's not just limited to kids. There's a lady who usually takes the treadmill either beside me or the next one to my left. She sets it to 3.0 and talks loud enough that I can hear her over my iPod turned 3/4 of the way up. Another guy does the same thing, except he does short calls and a few texts in between. I don't know if he's doing office work or what. If that's the case, leave the office at the office.yubb wrote:Tried something new, for me, at the gym today. Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I used to get upset when people would use one of the two good tradmills at my gym (out of the five total treadmills) and walk on it. These are the ones that have some give when you take your strides (they also have TVs built in). So they'd walk slow and I would run on the old crap treadmills that probably did more damage than good.
Then I saw a lady reading the Bible. Not like a small paperback version, mind you. It could've been the bible they used at mass when I used to go. Thing was huge. She probably burned more calories carrying that thing into the gym than she did by walking on the treadmill.

Friends and I officially signed on for Mud on the Mountain at 7 Springs. Any tips for training for these? I did the Warrior Dash just fine, and I'm not a runner/jogger by any means, so should I have a problem since this is 7 friggen miles?

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Your job is to finish it, not win it. IIRC, and it has been mentioned on here, it's not timed. Go at your own pace. Was supposed to run it with co-workers but I'm on the IR for mud events til next year.DudeMan2766 wrote:Friends and I officially signed on for Mud on the Mountain at 7 Springs. I can't remember if it was timed or not.
If you can run three to five miles you shoudl do fine. The hills are killer, though.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Thats what im worried about, im not really a runner. I can to on the arc trainers or elipticals at the gym for an hour at a time a lot. And I work out every day. But thats a really long distance. Im not worried about times at all. I just feel like even jogging and walking, 7 miles might be too far.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Bah! At least try. If you can't make it, so what? Working out often is a detriment to running. The bigger I get, the worse my runs are. I guess that makes perfect sense, though. That said, having strong legs will help on the first hill. You run up Stowe, halfway up anyway. Then you actually crawl up another hill.
I understand being worried, but these events are too much fun to pass up.

Oh I know. I did the WD last year, and had to get back home after so had to go ahead of my friends. Basically did it by myself and had a blast. This one we actually have a group going, possibly staying the weekend. I've been starting to do some leg exercises this week and trying to increase my jogging time to get ready for it. Im pumped.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I just got some pretty hardcore lights so I'm going to try some night riding on the mtn bike trails tonight. Hoping this opens up a whole new world for me and allows me for more rides in general. Work/school are making it tough to ride regularly during daylight hours.

Did anybody hear about the indoor bike park? Supposed to be for both BMX and mountain bikes.

I'm doing a Body Pump at my gym this afternoon. Are these lame or are they good? Is this just a 2010's version of Jazzercise?

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I'm pretty worried that I have a stress fracture in my lower fibula. From a day or so after I ran in a 5k about 10 days ago my left ankle has been very swollen. I ran about 1.5 miles on it three days after the 5k but that was about all I could do. I ran 3 miles on it 6 days after and its been even more swollen since. Everything seems to point to that being what is going on -- I didn't do anything specific to it - no twisting or anything like that -- its in the time period of a few weeks to a few months after I started exercising after a long period of inactivity. I had just ramped up from about 2-2.5 miles to 3.5-4 miles the week or so before the 5k and then ran harder than usual in the 5k.
I am set to see an orthopedic doctor next Tuesday. I will be extremely disappointed if I have to rest it from impact exercise for 6-8 weeks. I was really making good progress....

Your going to the doctor because your foot hurts from running....one more reason you shouldn't have a low premium low deductible Insurance plan.Kraftster wrote:I am set to see an orthopedic doctor next Tuesday.
