I don't think so. It's an AHL only contract good for up to 25 games. I think he is free to sign with any NHL team at any point right now. WBS lost their three best defenseman, Eaton is a solid guy and knows the Pens system. I'm sure this is mutally beneficial to both teams.
Also, remember there is no roster limit after the trade deadline. The 25 games for the PTO is up on 3/20, 5 games shy of April 3. He will be in game shape and if there are no other options for depth I'd love to have Eaton at practices.
I'll never forget his huge playoff goal vs. the Flyers (Game 6, conf. qtrs.).
The improbability of Eaton scoring, followed by the Crosby bat the puck in out of the air... that sequence played out not all that differently than the run on the North Stars in game 6 - started by the most improbable of scorers but building from there.
I thought the Red Wings might be in on Eaton, with all of their injuries at D. Ian White now has a cut calf muscle from a skate injury. Carlo Colaiacovo, Ericsson, Kindl are all out...

Very good point. I think I'd feel much more comfortable giving a guy like Eaton bottom pairing minutes in the event of injury to one of the six regulars than giving the minutes to a rookie like Bortuzzo, who rarely played in regular season games.
Shero just being a good guy and giving him some playing time. Wouldn't read much more into it. The guys been out of a job for a long time and passed over by many clubs needing D men recently. Best of luck nonetheless. Was a good foot soldier.
