Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I run a 10k 3 times a week and love it. It comes down to what you like. I also swim ~1 mile those days and do weight lifting / elliptical the other days. Seems to be a good variety of resistance and cardio.
And I do the same thing GS, breakfast and lunch are the same for me and I mix it up for dinner (but dinner is the same rotation every week). I like it simple, haha.

Nothing wrong with that at all, do what makes ya happy. I just believe in terms of people looking to get in shape and lose weight starting out, the best way to go is picking up and moving some weights.Beveridge wrote:I run a 10k 3 times a week and love it. Haha yeah, I'm not complicated. People ask me how I do it, just doesn't bother me.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Yeah. Last year I lost around 150 pounds (my big project for the year) through dieting and 100% cardio. Lost a ton of muscle doing that and it has taken me a good 7 months to build a portion of it back. If I could do it again, I would have switched to weights about 2/3 of the way through the process.GSdrums87 wrote:Nothing wrong with that at all, do what makes ya happy. You're in a similar boat that I was then. 6 foot 160 and just stringy and not in shape after losing all the weight. Eat 1 gram of protein for every pound you weigh, and just lift heavy, heavy weights.Idoit40fans wrote:Oh well i'm in no need of losing weight. I've never exceeded 160 and i'm about 5'11. Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I can believe this. I'm a Planet Fitness member and typically what I do is 30 minutes of cardio when I first get to the gym. I've mostly done the treadmill but only because I was trying to get to where I could do a 5K. when my ankle was injured I was riding the stationary bike and I liked that just fine but then, I enjoy riding both my mountain bike and road bike when I have time. after the cardio I usually go to the 30 minute workout area which combines machines with various "step box" exercises. they have a trainer in there giving you different exercises to do to keep it interesting. by the end I'm usually sweating pretty good and my heart rate is up significantly.GSdrums87 wrote:Absolutely. Think of how much more it's doing to you...running is just pumping your legs and maintaining your HR. HIIT you're not even thinking about time, you're just so focused on getting your set done. You're tearing your muscles up from the shoulders down, and your HR is staying just as high as if you were running.

Lol I loved that commercial. But I love how PF is the "judgement free zone" and their whole commercial scheme is based on judging bodybuilders. I left my PF because they took all the free-weights out and all dumbbells over 45 pounds.thepittman wrote:GSdrums87 wrote:Nothing wrong with that at all, do what makes ya happy. Sounds like you've got an hour a day for a workout, that's great! Depending on your goals, that's a very manageable time frame to achieve them when you get into your routines.shoeshine boy wrote:I can believe this. Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
my PF is pretty good. I think the dumbbells go up to 75 and they have 3 free weight stations though about the only day I can get near the free weights is Friday. there are 3 things I love about my PF: 1) it's cheap 2) the hydro massage tables 3) there are plenty of fat people there working out. :)GSdrums87 wrote:

Haha I'm happy to see people in there working towards their goals. Nothing did more for my life personally than losing weight. My gym is $10 a month, dumbbells up to 150 (yeah, I know), and just a variety of all kinds of cables, benches and machines. 3 squat racks, shrug and deadlift machines, whatever you could want. Also a professional chiropractor and massage therapist on site, tons of cardio machines, private classes, tanning...not too bad.shoeshine boy wrote:my PF is pretty good. While running in the high heat you may not beat your last time, but after temps return to normal you may see an increase. You can stress your body not just by running longer or faster, but also by adding other difficulties, like heat and hills.Idoit40fans wrote:Outdoor running at this time of year would cause a decline. You can't go out running in a heat index of 105.
You may even sweat off a few more calories, as long as you don't die of heat stroke.

So GORUCK is in 38 days and I'm wearing my ruck pretty much all the time, even at work. I can't wait for this to be over so I can stop wearing this damn thing.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I have completely abandoned running aside from 5 minutes at the beginning of a workout to warm up. Just hitting the gym every other day and swimming or walking on off days.

Unfortuantely, I have to start to prepare for the State Police physical test in the fall. Have to do well, and it includes a lot of running.PensFanInDC wrote:Good. Running sucks.

Doesn't change the fact that running sucks lol. Not just form a science stand point, but from a 'I hate running' stand point. I still need to complete a 2 mile run in 16 minutes. I hate running but I have to in order to pass this test.

Any recommendations for running shoes? Mine finally blew out after probably 5,000 miles on them.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Sounds like they've been blown out.A good rule of thumb is to replace your running shoes every 300 to 400 miles, depending on your running style, body weight, and the surface on which you run. Smaller runners can get new running shoes at the upper end of the recommendation, while heavier runners should consider replacement shoes closer to the 300 mile mark. If you run on rough roads, you'll need to replace your running shoes sooner than if you primarily run on a treadmill.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Invest in some high quality insoles as well. Better for the joints and a more comfortable run = a much longer run.
