Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I am by no means a trainer, but when I go to the gym in the mornings, and its packed with older people, I have no idea how more than 50% of the people there don't seriously hurt themselves the way they use the weights or machines. Sometimes I just stare at people stunned thinking, "there is no possible way that they think that's the correct way to use that"

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Seriously. Form is 90% of the workout. If your form isn't right, then you're not accomplishing what you're trying to do. Moving up in weight isn't going to do anything if you're doing it wrong. That's why when I help friends out, they do empty set or low low weight just to make sure that their back is straight or they're sitting into their heels, etc.

The problem is that at a lot of gyms people take offense when you try to help them out.

Yeah, they really do. I just keep to myself now. People don't like being wrong. I've always been one to take advice from others in things I care about (lifting, hockey) but others just don't wanna hear it.

You tell someone that smoking is bad for them and they don't care
Tell someone that eating 5 hot pockets for lunch everyday is bad for them and everyone loses their mind.

"Hey man, not trying to tell you what to do or anything, but squats are dangerous, and your back is kinda--"
"HEY, OKAY, I GET IT, I'M JUST DOING MY THING, THANKS."
Then I never see them again. Probably came down with exploding kneed syndrome. That's what happens when you don't practice form and do quarter squats with 225.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
CT Fletcher thinks form is overrated. He calls it "penitentiary style". He said the biggest dude's he's ever seen came out of the penitentiary and that's how they work out "inside".
I don't know how many deadlifts these guys are going, but I think he's referring to things like bouncing the bar off your chest during the bench press. I can't really link a video because he swears so much, but look him up.
I try to adhere to good form. I don't really care how much I'm lifting; I don't want to brag to anyone that I can press x amount (where x = 1 million lbs.). So it's easy to just focus on good form as long as I'm making gains.

Arguing with an idiot of FB that think that women should eat no more than 1500 calories a day because they "don't have the muscle mass to use any more."
My head is going to explode.

Lololol just explain it to them like a person is a car. "The more gas you put in the car, the farther it can drive, and the more it can accomplish, but you want to empty the tank. If the tank doesn't empty then the car claims it's putting on water weight and then is at a higher risk for diabetes."

GoRuck on Saturday. I have mixed feelings of dread, fear, and excitement. Usually when you hear of an event (Tough Mudder, Warrior Dash, Super Spartan, etc...) there is at least 1 person who says "Meh. It wasn't that bad." I have yet to find ANYONE who has done a Ruck and has said anything less than, "Yeah....it sucked..."

Warrior Dash and Tough Mudders are gimmick races. They're designed for "crazy" people to be able to complete and post pictures on their Facebook walls.PensFanInDC wrote:GoRuck on Saturday. Sounds like you've picked a tough race. You have no one to blame but yourself for that.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I did the Warrior Dash with zero training, no running, and in general, highly out of shape. It's definitely a fun time, but isn't meant to challenge people. Tough Mudder is something that i wouldn't attempt without training. It strikes me as something that only in shape people should attempt.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I usually go run a Dash once a year because it's fun and it's something different. Is it challenging? To a degree, yes. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't usually find time in my schedule to run up about a mile-plus in mud-covered hills and then follow it up by climbing a 15-20 foot wall or swimming through a random lake on zero notice.
Now is it as challenging as some people make it out to be? LOL, no....not even close. With some of the comments, you would think that some of those people ran a Mudder.

Seen some guy the other day he must of been a germ-a-phob of some sort. As he was using the machines he wouldn't put any part of his body on the resting pads or seat that you are supposed to use for support. As much as i worried about him hurting him self, it was kind of funny to see him balance himself trying to use these machines with out touching certin things.
I am guessing he was scarred of germs, but he would touch the hand grips with no problem which was proably the worst part to touch since that would carry more germs. But any machine with the black pads he wouldn't touch thoes pads. I would of said something to the guy but he had that natural look like he was mad at the world.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Yeah GoRuck isn't even a race either. It's a 12 hour, 20 mile team effort. 30 of us are embarking on what is 12 hours of Special Forces Selection. I just have to keep telling myself that it's only 12 hours and the real SF guys do this for something like 3 weeks in a row. GoRuck does their own selection which is 48 hours long. I see them post live during their selections on FB. Usually 12-15 start and 0-2 finish. The GoRuck Challenge, which I am doing, has a 94% finish rate.yubb wrote:Warrior Dash and Tough Mudders are gimmick races. Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
First time back to the gym in 2.5 years. Starting with cardio to get my stamina up and will work into weight training. (I know I should have both, but I prefer to ease into it.) Need to lose a bunch of weight I gained back after a successful diet and exercise program 5 years ago.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
The races are fun. The only thing more difficult about TM is that it's longer. The only training you need is to be able to run a few miles. This is coming from the perspective of someone who's active. If you're a couch potato you're probably not too well off to do any of the obstacle course races.count2infinity wrote:I did the Warrior Dash with zero training, no running, and in general, highly out of shape. I'd skip the Tough Mudder anyway and do the Mud on the Mountain at 7 Springs. Way less fluff and much steeper hills.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Just realized I'm gonna fall short of the 10 race goal that I had set for myself earlier this year. So far I have four (Warrior Dash, Foam Fest 5k, ChickFilA 5k, and a 9k from back home) and I have another 5 on the radar that are already paid for (Steelers 5k this weekend, Color Run 5k, Lemieux 6.6k, Great Race 10k, and Morley's Run 10 miler that is the part road-part trail race that I had planned on last year before I jacked up my knee.) The tenth race would have been a 10k for a local neighborhood watch group, but I didn't check the time of the Facebook posting and didn't realize that the day I was driving home was the same morning that it was being run. Way to go, Jason
Since I didn't get a bike race in this year, I did find this one on Montour Trail: http://www.montourtrail.org/events/disp ... t.asp?id=5" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but that means having to buy a new helmet. Somehow lost mine in the move or maybe it's still packed in a box somewhere. I could do the 15 with no problem and the 24 mi seems very doable.
