I love when people (not in this thread) act amazed that there are flurries and sleet mixing into rain on October 23rd. Although I was bummed that we missed out on Snowtober a couple years ago

I'm skipping winter this year. Moved here in July, was in the 70's for highs, mid 40's for lows, now it's high 70's, low 80's for highs and mid 50's for lows. I'm gonna like no winter this year.

Uhh... What's South Africa like? And why did you move there?

Wouldn't that be a little of a culture shock compared to Pittsburgh?

Without writing a novel, it's very different and there was quite a bit of culture shock. I moved here for work and should be back in March at the latest. Just a short term assignment. There are many very cool things about being here, such as going on safari, going to an animal reserve that my wife volunteers at and playing with baby lions and tigers, the food, and the fact that 1 USD = 10 South African Rand is nice... There are also many not so good things, such as living behind walls topped by electric/razor wire fence, bars on the windows, and having to be constantly on guard. Oh and crazy drivers, the freeway is 7 lanes in each direction and is pure madness. All in all it's a good experience, nice to visit, but will be glad to leave.

I just read Disgrace by Coetzee. That took place in Cape Town (is that a real place?), I never want to go there.

Cape Town is indeed a real place, some areas are quite nice and beautiful. Others, well, I haven't read the book, but I can imagine it's probably spot on. There are some very rough areas there. I'm in Johannesburg. There isn't much nice here, that why I leave on the weekends to better surroundings. Search "joburg star" for the local newspaper and see what goes on here, and half of what happens isn't reported... I pretty much go to work and come home to my secure place and drink during the week to cope and get outta dodge on the weekends. The rest of the country is really beautiful and a lot safer than here. A safari here is truly life changing. The newest thing is sniping bicyclists for their bikes. Driving is a free for all. It a bit mad max esque... Work said if I do this then it's all expenses paid to Austria for 2-3 years, so I've got that going for me, which is nice...

Your source is exaggerating. It's a very cold rain, but not sleeting.

Columbia's sources must be south of I-90.

We had a very light sleet Tuesday morning, and heavy sleet today near Edinboro. There was a thin layer of accumulation on the north side of the building and on some parked cars.

As far as being early, just in the last 10 years we have had accumulating snow (at least enough to cover the grass) in early October several times. I think the earliest was Oct 5th.

We had an inch of wet snow on the car this morning, and the grass and trees are covered. There were power outages in northern Crawford county from the heavy snow taking down trees.

So I am coaching U6 girls soccer and days like this the debate always is- are people going to be mad because I asked them to bring their kids out in 40 degree weather or will they he mad because I canceled practice but it is not a typhoon or blizzard (note that a few Thursdays lately have stunk weather wise and I already canceled twice and cut one short for lightning).

So, sent a text blast out saying "we DO have practice tonight, let me know if you cannot make it." Half the team could not make it. Practice canceled. Coach off the hook.

A lot of times, the lake effect snow can be heavier further inland because the hills cool the air even further, which helps to create more moisture. So you can have minimal snowfall amounts right on the coast of Lake Erie and heavy amounts 30-40 miles inland

Thanks. That was near the top of one of the highest ridges in southern Erie County, this morning around 8:30. This time of year, the warm lake water also buffers the area along the lake shore enough that they usually avoid any snow or even frost. The real snow belt is from the I-90 ridge south to the Saegertown area - the southern 1/2 of Erie County and the northern 1/2 of Crawford.
