Re: Quotes you like.
-- Thomas JeffersonI am certainly not an advocate for frequent and untried changes in laws and constitutions. I think moderate imperfections had better be borne with; because, when once known, we accommodate ourselves to them, and find practical means of correcting their ill effects. But I know also, that laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths disclosed, and manners and opinions change with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also, and keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy, as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.

Although I've never heard anyone put forth the proposition that Edison didn't "execute" before.
Thomas Edison was the Steve Jobs a century ago. That is not meant to be a compliment.
Edison's hell

Re: Quotes you like.
There is no denying Tesla's greatness. The history is there, but I still don't think it should discount all the (good) work that Edison did as well. Like I said, he was an a-hole, but was a genius as well.

Re: Quotes you like.
We aren't saying he wasn't a genius. That quote of his is a crock though. The man was a visionary that rarely executed anything on his own.

You beat me to the punch. This is what I was setting up for.
Not to say *anything* bad about Tesla. He was an amazing mind. But it took Edisons execution to bring those ideas to the public.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its
victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under
robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's
cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be
satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us
without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

"Most of the major ills of the world have been caused by well-meaning people who ignored the principle of individual freedom, except as applied to themselves, and who were obsessed with fanatical zeal to improve the lot of mankind-in-the-mass through some pet formula of their own." - Henry Grady Weaver, author of a classic book on freedom, The Mainspring of Human Progress

“If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if
you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to
the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a
precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to
fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to
live as slaves.”

Quite a few supply-siders have created for themselves a wonderful alternative intellectual history in which John Maynard Keynes was a fraud, Paul Samuelson and even Milton Friedman are fools, and the true line of deep economic thought runs from Adam Smith through obscure turn-of-the-century Austrians straight to them.
