RIP

20 year old bodybuilder that I knew from various lifting boards pronounced dead in a hospital last night

it wouldn't surprise me if it comes out he was abusing DNP or other various substances and mixed them with drinking last night

Kid was fitness model-esque shredded, people would murder for his genetics and physique....

Kinesio tape. Yay, or nay?

My chiro has been taping my shoulder and calf (had that terrible knot addressed today; I've had broken bones that hurt less than that deep tissue work), and I have to say it's either psychosomatic or the stuff actually works. Between KT Tape and Rocktape I seem to like Rocktape better; the adhesive is way stronger, so even tho KT seems to stretch a bit more it won't hold as long or as well.

I used it for GoRuck and it worked great until it came off. Most people aren't doing that kind of activity though.

What are the secrets of an inexpensive gym membership?

The girl I'm dating wants to join one in the east end - so that would be LA Fitness in Bakery Square, Fitness Factory on S Highland, or Shadyside X on Walnut. Any that I'm missing? Given that LA Fitness is a huge chain I thought I'd be able to find some promo codes online or something.

I usually just jog and lift dumbells at home, but I'd join with her at a bogo rate.

I think fitness factory is the only you'd get a reasonable rate at, but they probably want much more $$ up front.

Is there a planet fitness up there? It's like $10 a month down here.

There are a few in the suburbs but none anywhere around me. I miss living on the South Side and working out in that roidhead trailer on Wharton Street that never seemed to remember to bill me.

I can get some kind of discount rate at Fitness Factory through my health insurance - but theres no discount. Just additional fees  Either way its around $300 for the year, the work program just tacks on additional enrollment fees. And that doesn't help her either.

I feel like I've seen deals for you and a buddy to sign up and get one free, or get one half off. Not seeing anything like that online though.

at PF you can do the Black Card for $20 which gives you a free guest any time, access to the hydromassage beds (love'em!) and access to any PF in the country.

Congrats. And ugh. I've never had a desire to run anything longer than 5 miles.

I'll probably never see my first one. :(

I'm usually content doing 5ks and probably even enjoy 10ks more than the 5's. I start doing the longer races last year, ones that are longer than the 10k but not quite a half-marathon and those really knock me down for a day or so. I couldn't imagine going 26 miles on foot. I'm not getting any younger and I'm sure my knees aren't getting in better shape.

I try to avoid running and just make sure when i'm at the gym I keep my heart rate elevated nonstop for 20-30 minutes. My knees don't like running, which sucks because I do like it. I've never had interest in running more than 5 or so miles either though and really never more than 5k. That was what I worked up to last year when I was running and then was just working on getting down to a 20 minute 5k. I think I got it down to like 21:30 or so as my best time before I got out of it. Marathon running has to do harm to your body.

Lately I've really been trying to focus more on HIIT, since I've really been getting in a regimented lifting schedule. Like Wednesday for example, I only worked out for like 13 minutes, but during that time I sustained something like a 7:40 mile pace. I was doing 1:15 jog, :45 all-out sprint. By the end of those 13 minutes, I was sucking wind hard, it's definitely a whole different beast.

I40, I'll probably never run a marathon for that exact reason. Obviously there are people that run a ton of them (congrats GJ), but there is clear, documented evidence that they actually destroy your heart tissue, as well as have other debilitating effects. I also have a family history of cardiac events, so I'd rather not risk it. I'll do up to a half-marathon and that's about it.

The type of form you use for running makes a huge difference. I'm a Pose runner. But whatever distance you run, have fun with it. It's just running. Nice article on some little known marathon dangers...

What are the expert opinions on the elliptical?

I've never used one much before. I ran on it for 60 minutes yesterday with my heart rate around 150. Wasn't too tiring, but the machine seemed to think I was burning about 100 calories every 10 minutes.

I could dig that - I could rewatch all of 24 on this thing leading up to the new season.

Ran 6 miles on the treadmill yesterday. Decided to do the Pittsburgh Half in May. Can't wait.

I'm tall, and the geometry of the elliptical just doesn't work for me. It wrecks my calves and is half the workout of real running. I burn 200/cal a mile which I can cover in about 8 minutes, so 500/cal in the same time it'd take to burn 200 on the elliptical. If I need something low impact I'd just bike, skate, or swim.

Wife loves the elliptical, and she's a marathoner, but she's 10" shorter than me. YMMV.

The calorie counter on an elliptical is off. You might burn 60 % of what it is telling you.

I always wondered how accurate these measurements are on all equipment.

It was definitely not very tiring. I often do a 2 mile loop around Shadyside in around 15 minutes (Negley to Highland, Baum to 5th) and am breathing pretty heavily at the end. This was a cakewalk.

If I jog straight up Center Ave from my office to my home 3.7ish miles away I burn roughly 500 calories in 35 minutes (according to my cellphone).
