* "Bleeding Kansas" Wars Sign-Up Thread *
It is 1854. The Kansas-Nebraska Act has been passed to pave the way for the territory of Kansas to enter the Union.
People are upset.
"Why are they upset over Kansas?" you may well ask. Nothing to see there. No NHL hockey teams (yet!). No fine brothels or opium dens like you'll find in the sophisticated, cosmopolitan centers of the East.
"It's just fly-over country," one particularly prescient observer notes.
Ah, but the country is afoot! Actually, it's a-railroadin'! Some folks in the East feel that they can make some good dough with a trans-continental railroad and Kansas seems a likely spot for it. Moreover, there's lots of tillable land just waiting to be tilled by them dirty sod-buster types! Anything to get them poorer types off the streets. The cherry on the sundae is that, although there are plenty of native folk there, they aren't especially uppity or, if necessary, are surprisingly killable.
In reality, though, the country is only a-railroadin' itself toward tragedy and self-destruction.
See, there's this little issue about which some folks tend to have strong opinions: the institution of SLAVERY and the expansion thereof.
The Missouri Compromise of 1820 had for more than thirty years quieted concerns about the issue: with the exception of Missouri, NO territory located above the 36°30' parallel would be admitted to the Union as a slave state. BUT the Kansas-Nebraska Act has invalidated that compromise in allowing "popular sovereignty" in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska, both located -- you guessed it -- above that parallel.
People in the North are OUTRAGED!! INCENSED!!! Enough to temporarily leave their prostitutes and their opium dens and actually do stuff in Congress!
People in the South are rallying to get more slavery territory and stuff like that!! Enough to temporarily leave their slave mistresses and their barrels of rye whiskey and actually do stuff in Congress!
Pro-slavery nasties are flooding into Kansas from Missouri. Anti-slavery folks (including some nasties) are flooding into Kansas from the North.
There just may be fights breaking out between the two. There just may ...
... And it may lead to ... Bleeding Kansas!
Or maybe everyone will sit down and talk about it over tea and cakes as frontier-types often do.
But it will probably be ... wait for it ...
BLEEDING KANSAS!!!

Looking for at least 16 players, but can do it with less. Start time some time next week, I suppose.

It's been a while since I played. Does much of the game take place over weekends? If not, I'm in.

Probably start Monday (PMs out Sunday night). Maybe a few more will sign up.
I think people are scared off by the word "Kansas." I'm not sure many know that it's a state as well as a city in MO.
