Re: KennyTheKangaroo's Thread of Randomness
Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Regarding the above though, (and my coming rant isn't directed at you, tif) I can't say this too many times to anyone getting married - Feed your photographers before your guests. I never had a bride and groom ask for photos or them or their guests eating. And if you want to start pissing guests off - especially female guests, let them catch you taking their picture when they're putting food in their mouths or drinking. The bride and groom/wedding party should get their meals and then the photographers should be fed so they can wolf down their food quickly and be done by the time the b&g are finished eating. Then the photographer/photographers are free to shoot the rest of the night.tifosi77 wrote:And to make matters worse, looking at timestamps on the metadata there is like a 45 minute gap between sequential images. I kinda thought one of the purposes for bringing a second shooter was so that you could stagger your meal breaks.
I stress this because you wouldn't believe how many weddings I shot where I was served last. It was like the catering staff said, "Well, if there's any food left after we feed the guests, you get to eat." So I'd end up standing around taking 100 photos of the cookie table or ice sculptures for an hour while everyone ate, then my plate would finally be delivered and as soon as I picked up a fork, the DJ would begin announcing special dances/etc. The other thing that would piss me off to no end was when the b&g didn't have a seat for me in the reception hall, so I'd end up eating in the kitchen or some side room and hoped I didn't miss anything important.
Wedding photography is very stressful on photographers. They deserve a short break to rest and regroup during the reception and should be provided a hot meal. It doesn't have to be filet mignon, but if your guests are eating chicken, your photographer should too(lots of times I got a stale club sandwich and potato chips). Treating them like servants during the reception is a sure way to kill their creativity for the rest of the evening. /rant

Re: KennyTheKangaroo's Thread of Randomness
She doesn't do weddings normally, so we really should have locked down the contract a little tighter. The only thing written into the contract was that we were to get 4 edited pictures by Christmas. We wrote this in to get frames and photos for family members for Christmas gifts. We got 2... the Monday before Christmas. Other than that, I don't think there's anything written in as a hard deadline.Hockeynut! wrote:I thought maybe you were joking that it took me 7 years to get them their pics.
Did your photographer have anything in your contract about delivery estimates? Really busy shooters and/or companies with multiple shooters can take 3-4 months sometimes. Have you tried contacting them? That's definitely longer than I'd ever want to keep a client waiting but weddings are, without a doubt the most time consuming type of photography in terms of post production and once you get behind, it's so hard to catch up again. Hope it works out for you!

Re: KennyTheKangaroo's Thread of Randomness
We included the two photographers as 'guests' for the purposes of the catering company (they ate the same food we did) and they had seats at, iirc, the Ingrid Bergman table (no numbers, old Hollywood glamour was our 'theme') They were free to take their meals at their own discretion. Is that not how it's normally done? We certainly weren't given any contrary direction or requests by the photographer.Hockeynut! wrote:Regarding the above though, (and my coming rant isn't directed at you, tif) I can't say this too many times to anyone getting married - Feed your photographers before your guests.

I'd definitely follow up. Not to scare you, but weddings are an entirely different type of photography and editing than most other aspects of the medium. She is probably extremely overwhelmed with the number of images she has to edit and doesn't know where to start. And depending on her knowledge of light and posing, she might be putting you off because she's trying to salvage the photos. Lots of "natural light" photographers crash and burn at weddings. You should call her asap and if you don't get a response, send a certified letter. Don't make threats because she'll probably just shut down completely, but let her know it's been an inordinately long time and that you're excited to see the photos as soon as possible.count2infinity wrote:She doesn't do weddings normally, so we really should have locked down the contract a little tighter. Yeah, I definitely didn't mean to come across like I was criticizing you or excusing your photographers bad work. There's no excuse for what you received.tifosi77 wrote:We included the two photographers as 'guests' for the purposes of the catering company (they ate the same food we did) and they had seats at, iirc, the Ingrid Bergman table (no numbers, old Hollywood glamour was our 'theme') They were free to take their meals at their own discretion. Most weddings I shot, especially as my prices went up and when I was shooting higher end weddings, there was a vendor table for the photographer, dj, etc. Inevitably the venue staff fed us last. Or, if it was buffet style, waited until everyone else ate before inviting us to get our meals. It got to the point where I put it in my contract that I was to be fed at the same time as the b&g but that only worked about half the time.

Re: KennyTheKangaroo's Thread of Randomness
Another wedding anecdote.
In one of the last weddings I shot, we were at a very ritzy venue in Pittsburgh and were promised meals by the b&g. Well, at dinner time we sat in a side room (we were not seated in the main reception area, grr) and waited. And waited. And waited. I kept going over to the main room to check in and everyone was eating, except us. After about an hour, it was time for the reception to begin (dances, etc). I mentioned to the facility manager that we hadn't been fed and he said, "They didn't have you down for a meal". We'd started shooting that day at around 8am and at this point it was 7ish. He promised he'd get us meals. We shot the reception, all the dances and events and it was down to the general dancing. I again asked if were going to get anything to eat. He promised we would and the bridge apologized profusely. My head was absolutely pounding the entire reception after having not eaten the entire day but I just rolled with it. We eventually got out at around 10pm and never were given anything to eat.

eff that noise... we made sure our DJs ate, our photographer ate, heck we even took a plate down to the shuttle driver.Hockeynut! wrote:Another wedding anecdote.

Most b&gs were awesome. It was usually the venues that were total d-bags. And like I said, the more expensive the venue, the shabbier they treated me. I received better food and warmer welcomes in firehalls and church basements than I did at some of the "nicest" wedding venues in Pittsburgh.
