You're literally climbing during parts of it. I couldn't sleep that night without maintaining the fetal/walking position as my body would cramp up otherwise.

I don't think I could maintain a 2mph pace along that trail. I'd need to rest too often to keep up. It's a good goal though. Maybe last summer I could have done it. Not now though.

9 miles of it is on road. You should be able to hum along at 4mph there, I'd reckon.
Showed this to my wife. She wants to consider it for 2015. I just need to lose a small person worth of weight and she needs to finish treatment. Doable.

I listen to books when I run endurance events. I'd probably do the same here. My biggest issue would be that this event is long enough that my GPS watch would quit on me and I'm addicted to the thing.
This would be fun to do with a GoPro strapped to your chest in timelapse mode, would make for a pretty decent video. Again, though, even with the bigger battery packs how for can you get with a GoPro in timelapse mode?

Boredom is one of the challenges you face. I did it with two others and we told stories and jokes to pass the time. And while walking on the road is easier terrain, it's quite jarring in the long run.
Hardest part for me was trying to get the rock out of my shoe after 25 miles or so. I tried twice without success until I realized it was just something in my foot. So I walked the last 10 miles feeling like there was a rock in my right shoe.
Bright point was at about 2 miles to go the guy who serves beer to the hikers. The year the hike goes the other direction so there is no beer man, sadly.

My wifes last chemo treatment is mid-June. She wants to be ready for the OBX Marathon in November. She can do it so long as the reconstruction surgery doesn't get in the way too much. I haven't been able to run more than 6 miles since I ran my last marathon in 2012. After that race I didn't setup a new training goal and just let everything go. I haven't done any real physical fitness since the Ruck on September 1st. I burned 23,000 calories that night and it took me 5 days to recover. By then I fell off the wagon. I have a doc appt on Friday and I will see what he says about what type of physical activity I am allowed to do. I expect a full green light so I hope to be back to 5-6 days a week of training starting on Monday. I have to be in twice as good shape to do a GoRuck Heavy. The Challenge was 12.5 hours long and I was at the end of my rope when he graduated the class. The Heavy is 24 straight hours.

When is the heavy? If you've gone cold turkey since last September, can you possibly be ready for a 24-hour challenge?
It sucks, though. Training for this stuff is so miserable. So when I was injured I was like "Oh, great, I don't have to worry about feeling guilty for not going to the gym or exercising." Wrong. I still felt guilty, then I gained weight and I started to feel bad because of that. Now I'm back to exercising and it's pure hell trying to get my lungs back. Turns out the weight lifting (the only thing I could do) doesn't help your cardio much.

There is one in DC on December 6th of this year but I don't plan on doing it until 2015. That schedule has not been released yet. I'll probably do a challenge on Halloween of this year. My ultimate goal is to complete a Selection. I don't know when or even if I'll ever be ready for that though. The pass rate is less than 10%.

For the first time I took my goldendoodle running with me today. It went WAY better than expected. She kept a perfect 8:30 or so pace throughout the run, didn't pull or lag behind. I also found that I had much more energy and it seemed like the miles went by more quickly...maybe just because I had a running buddy.

At roughly an 8:30 mile pace (which I am very comfortable at), it was a fast trot for my dog, which seemed perfect.

I'm sure the research is good. JRTs are 15lb dogs, 10 miles is 1:25. Just a log time to go. Looking back at the post it sounds pessimistic, but I really would like to check out a 10mi JRT.
I read an article in RW a few years ago about how to condition a dog to be a running partner, you have to build them up and be mindful of not to run them through roadside trash or on hard surfaces too long.

I'm running a 15K in Philly on Sunday....will be my longest run since Broad Street last year, and easily my 2nd longest run ever. I didn't really do a training regimen last year, and didn't really do one this year. Should be interesting

I registered for the lottery. So we'll see on the 8th if I have to make a decision on it or not. I'm worried that my Karma gained from entering last year will make me a lock to win the lottery.

The course appears to be up and back MLK Drive, starting at the Art Museum and turning around underneath Roosevelt Boulevard. It's the Hot Chocolate Run, whatever that means.
