Re: Car thread
I'm just not sure how a small difference between two cars renders one some sort of huge compromise. For example, if I choose to buy a BMW 328i xDrive wagon over a 328i xDrive sedan—two vehicles that have the same engine and transmission and are functionally identical from the rear doors forward—you would say I have made some sort of lesser choice. I look at that choice and think something like "Great, now I can fit in all my gun cases and target stands when I head to the range." The wagon is slightly slower (3/10 of a second 0–60)because it weighs an extra 185 lbs., but on the other hand the wagon is actually closer to a 50/50 weight ratio.tifosi77 wrote:What did I say earlier? It's a question of function over form. The Tesla S and Porsche are both clearly set up and marketed as sedans ('saloon cars') that just happen to have a hatch to get into the trunk. The other 5-door hatches we're talking about are all glorified station wagons.

You've not made a lesser choice by opting for the wagon over the sedan, but that choice connotes certain aspects of your lifestyle. That's all.

Makes sense. Buy a BMW 328i xDrive wagon and you're a mom in the 1980s. Buy a BMW 328i xDrive sedan and you're ... not.tifosi77 wrote:you're a mom in the 1980s.

Re: Car thread
There is a consignment shop I go to, they have nice furniture pieces. Lately they've added a few cars out front, and the latest is a Volvo wagon. The only wagon I ever really looked at with any reverence.

You might as well just castrate yourself for admitting that.

Re: Car thread
Other cars we had when I was growing up:
1965 Mercedes:

1970 Galaxie 500:

1972 Olds 98 (but it was 4 door):

1974 LTD:

1976? Rabbit (in school bus yellow):

1968? Dodge Coronet. Didn't have this long and remember the horn went off in the middle of night a few times:

1978 Chevette (the car I learned to drive manual).
The following doesn't do justice as the one we had was gold on top and then black on the bottom.

1979 Caprice Classic:

That's all I can remember. I think there was another Rabbit (brown?) in there.

Re: Car thread
we had this Monte Carlo

and a Dodge Monaco (although by the time I got to it, the car was more bondo, filler, and off-green paint)

and this Escort in the same awful powder blue color.

Re: Car thread
My reviews...
Mercedes: Purchased for $900; had a bad muffler and the doors rusted out.
Volvo: I poked a bunch of holes in the backseat with a screwdriver, when I was 3.
Galaxie 500: No memory of it.
Olds 98: That was thing was a beast.
LTD: Oldest brother wrecked the front end and it was never the same.
Rabbit: See how smooth it rides.
Coronet: No memory of it.
Chevette: No A/C; piece of ****.
Caprice: A pretty slick car; also popular with early 90s, West Coast rappers.

It wasn't pimped out like that one. Fairly bland. I don't think it had power steering.Willie Kool wrote:That Coronet is sweet.

If I could have any of these in mint condition I'd pick the Olds with it's 455 engine. It sounded like a train when it idled.columbia wrote:My reviews...

Learned to drive in - 77 Caprice Wagon

My first car - 78 Impala 4 door, a total beater. I think it was 5 different colors by the time I scrapped it.

My second car - 73 Nova Hatchback - just like the picture. It had new quarter panels and paint, a nice original interior and a very healthy non-original 350. Still miss that car.
