For what it's worth I think the advice you got is the right one get her number from someone in the wedding and call her up

If you can't then take a shot via social media which is relatively lame but then maybe the kids these days don't view it that way

I started talking to my current gf of 4 + years through social media (met at party, didnt talk much), awkwardly friend requested her.. Awkwardly messaged her, ended up chatting / having decent convo, dropped my number at end of it... Worked

Granted I was 21 and she was 19 at the time, so this probably isn't relevant
