Re: LGP Education thread
School districts are now starting to limit subs to 15 days per month to avoid having to give them health care. Opting out isn't an option either because I guess they're forced to offer it regardless.

Nationwide? Or just certain states? Have a link?Pavel Bure wrote:School districts are now starting to limit subs to 15 days per month to avoid having to give them health care. Opting out isn't an option either because I guess they're forced to offer it regardless.

For sure in PA. One of the districts I'm in has implemented the practice and others are looking to follow.count2infinity wrote:Nationwide? Or just certain states? Re: LGP Education thread
i would assume thats nationwide in response to obamacare, but a district could potentially keep them on more and pay the penalities.
15 days * 8 hours per day / 4 weeks per month = average of 30 hours per week per month = the maximum an employee can work without an employer being forced to pay their insurance.

Re: LGP Education thread
I don't know how subs work in your area, but where I was at, they generally work in a few districts. I don't see this being a huge deal. Take this month for instance... there are only 22 days that are M-F. Take memorial day away as almost every school will have memorial day off, that's 21 days of school this month. 21-15= 6 So that's only 6 days out of the month that they either cannot work that day or have to go and work at a different school district. Unless you're arguing that subs should be full time employees and should get healthcare from the school district, which I haven't ever heard of before.

Re: LGP Education thread
The other big thing that the AIUs in PA are pushing right now is a staffing agency for subs. Many districts are already opting into it (Hempfield, and Greensburg Salem to name 2) which means as a sub our paychecks would no longer come from the school districts but from that agency and it would save schools from having to pay into our retirement funds. Bad days for people subbing, not a lot of incentive to sub when these things are put in place. It's nice to earn retirement savings while working towards a full time position.

In a shocking Obamacare development: workers in a crappy situation will now be in a potentially slightly more crappy situation.

No, if we had an option to be in a union I doubt this would be happening.King Sid the Great 87 wrote:Do substitutes pay union dues?Pavel Bure wrote:School districts are now starting to limit subs to 15 days per month to avoid having to give them health care. Re: LGP Education thread
When you sub, do you actually follow the lesson plan that normally would be followed if the normal teacher was there? When I was in school, most of the time we had a sub, we would have "study hall" instead of class.
One time we had a sub give us a test. We convinced him that the test was open book and we could work in groups. When the teacher found out about this (through a teacher's pet), we had to retake the test and it was much harder than the first time.

Re: LGP Education thread
Yes we follow the lesson plans and actually teach. I'm guessing you're talking about high-school in your example. In which case if you're certified in the given subject you teach. If not the teacher typically leaves worksheets, a book assignment, or a test for the students to complete. As for middle school and elementary though you teach the teacher's lesson plans.Sam's Drunk Dog wrote:When you sub, do you actually follow the lesson plan that normally would be followed if the normal teacher was there? Good to hear. I went to Ambridge and it was always like that at every level. Our band teacher was out for an entire semester and I guess they couldn't find a sub so we sat in the auditorium and did not nothing for most of the time he was out.

Most of the local yokel pols here in GA running in the primary are name checking common core as something to go after. Is that true in PA?

Re: LGP Education thread
Slight update on the situation for subs. Most districts are opting into "source4teachers" it's a staffing agency for subs. Daily rates for each district will stay the same but subs will get paid by the agency. After 90 days there are healthcare and 401k options. The thing that sucks is instead of getting a percent matched from the school for retirement it will be must less/stable with the 401k.

I'm not sure if common core is the right answer, but people really should get an understanding of what it is before commenting on it. There is a ton of misinformation about it.

1 in 6 teachers missed 18+ days in 2012-2013.
Average public school teachers missed 11 days.
Long term absences (10+ days) weren't counted.

Re: LGP Education thread
we got 12 days a year. 10 sick days and 2 personal days. Those accumulated if you didn't use them. By the end of my two years I had something like 12 or 13 sick days and 1 personal day that weren't used. I donated the sick days to a "sick bank" which the union has and can donate them to teachers with extraordinary circumstances. One person's child had cancer and took a few months off for surgeries and chemo stuff, she ran out of sick days so she got some from the union sick bank. the personal day poofed into thin air.

Re: LGP Education thread
The SC Superintendent of Education announced that the Common Core math and english standards are now "dead" here in SC. The SC Legislature signed a bill yesterday finalizing their destruction.
Which is fine and all, but Mrs. Gypsy has worked for 2+ years implementing it in our local school district. So all of that time, down the drain...
Most of the opposition stems (ha, get it? STEM) from ignorance and/or dislike of the federal government, and of course, its Chief Executive. This is South Carolina, after all.

NC is trying to do the same thing. Such a waste of time, if it happens. Many people really don't understand what Common Core is, and as you say, just want it gone because of who is in charge. Not that Obama is good for education, because he's not. Just finished our three days of testing which will help determine my job status. Let's hope those 10 year olds took the test seriously.Digitalgypsy66 wrote:The SC Superintendent of Education announced that the Common Core math and english standards are now "dead" here in SC. we had to have x number of days to do that, and I didn't have nearly enough, so I donated everything I could.MWB wrote:I "retired" and got paid for sick and personal days that weren't donated.count2infinity wrote:we got 12 days a year. 10 sick days and 2 personal days.
