Re: the longest day of the year aka the summer solstice
I was watching the weather on the news yesterday and they were talking about the solstice. He mentioned about the longest day and compared it to 6 months from now when Winter hits how much daylight we'll have. 6 months from today we will lose about 7 1/2 hours of daylight. Not that we all didnt realize that, but to see it put in numbers just seems crazy.

bump
June 21st will be this year's summer solstice. Generally speaking this gentleman bumps this thread only on the day of the solstice, but since the solstice falls on a saturday, this years bump will come a day early. enjoy it on a weekend, you ballers.

Re: the longest day of the year aka the summer solstice
I don't like that SS is in June, when there are 2+ months of 'summer vacation' remaining before school starts back up. Seems to me like either SS should be on the exact middle of summer vacation, or that summer vacation needs to be shifted so that the longest day of the year is the last day of summer vacation. After that, shorter days are ok.

Sunset is 8:23pm here in NC tonight. Would've thought it'd be later than PA.KennyTheKangaroo wrote:today is awesome, sunset is at 8:52 in yinzerland. enjoy it outside, you ballers.

8:35 here. I guess it's because we're further east than Pittsburgh?dodint wrote:Sunset is 8:23pm here in NC tonight. Would've thought it'd be later than PA.KennyTheKangaroo wrote:today is awesome, sunset is at 8:52 in yinzerland. enjoy it outside, you ballers.

East West should have nothing to do with it, unless they're accounting for topography? I dunno.
I used to really care about astronomy. I'm surprised how much I've forgotten.

wouldnt east west have everything to do with it? the further west you are, the longer it will take the sun to get all the way west (set)

This. Sun would set in Columbus like half an hour later than it would in Pittsburgh.Letang Is The Truth wrote:wouldnt east west have everything to do with it? the further west you are, the longer it will take the sun to get all the way west (set)
Also, it's pretty much the reason for time zones.

I remember in punta cana the sun would set at like 7:30 cause it's so far out in the EST time zoneMRandall25 wrote:This. Yeah, you're right. I had a total lapse there. Time zones are dumb. I always thought universal time would be a good thing. Living in Afghanistan with a :30 offset to the rest of the world will do that to you.
God damn I'm dumb today. **** night sleep last night, I'm really feeling it.

where i went to school was right next to the EST/CT border. some people used to drive to a bar right over the line for an extra hour of drinking. with travel time, it was only 15 minutes tho

You'd already be living in a different county; why complicate things with a TZ change?mac5155 wrote:I always wondered what its like to live in one time zone and work in another.. like you live in Alabama but work in Georgia.

Re: the longest day of the year aka the summer solstice
I don't usually travel much and when i do it's south. But last my ex gf and I went to Salem, MA for a few days. I was amazed at how much earlier the sun set up there as compared to Pittsburghmac5155 wrote:I remember in punta cana the sun would set at like 7:30 cause it's so far out in the EST time zoneMRandall25 wrote:This. Jupiter has about a 10 hour day compared with the earth's 24 hours. So you'd have 10 time zones there.

9:00 up here in Erie County.dodint wrote:Sunset is 8:23pm here in NC tonight. Would've thought it'd be later than PA.KennyTheKangaroo wrote:today is awesome, sunset is at 8:52 in yinzerland. enjoy it outside, you ballers.
That's just a time shift, a result of keeping time. Sunrise in Columbus is also later. The real difference is north/south. The farther north the longer the days in summer and shorter the days in winter - due to the Earth's tilt. Any two points at the same latitude will have an equal day length.MRandall25 wrote:This. Re: the longest day of the year aka the summer solstice
Exactly.
During the summer, the days get longer the further north you go...of course, you eventually get to the land of eternal sun. The winter provides the opposite, the days get shorter the further north you go.
The east/west thing....the further EAST you are in your respective time zone, the earlier your sunrise and sunset will be. The further WEST you are, the later it will be.
For example, in Lexington KY tonight, the sunset is 9:09 PM. But about 80 miles to the west in Evansville, the sun sets in 8:15 PM, because they are just over the border into CDT. Of course, the western edge of the CDT will enjoy late sunsets like Lexington does.
So in each respective time zone, the further north and west one goes, the later the sunset (until you cross to the next time zone, of course)
