Any military that embarks on a land war with Russia during the winter is automatically off the list IMO. That said I have no idea if the Mongols did the same thing.

I have a bias towards them as Napoleon is one of my top 3 favorite historical figures.

Da Vinci and Gandhi are on that list with him.

I always thought it would be awesome to bring Da Vinci into modern times so he could see all that we can do now. The man was centuries ahead of his time. I'm not sure if indoor plumbing would amaze or frighten him.

Why should Caesar get to stomp around like a giant, while the rest of us try not to get smushed under his big feet? What's so great about Caesar? Hmm? Brutus is just as cute as Caesar. OK Brutus is just as smart as Caesar. People totally like Brutus just as much as they like Caesar. And when did it become OK for one person to be the boss of everybody? Huh? Because that's not what Rome is about! WE SHOULD TOTALLY JUST STAB CAESAR!

Much less glamorously, I'm the descendant of a leading Molly Maguire on my mom's side and a famous Lithuanian partisan (anti-Soviet freedom fighters... think the movie "Defiance", but right across the Belarussian border)

Rome was probably, in my opinion, the most powerful civilization to ever exist, not withstanding today. They basically had plumbing, hell i think some of their sewers are still in use. Their military was incredible. Greed and corruption was their downfall.

Actually, it could probably be better argued that immigrants and complacency among the citizens were responsible for their downfall.

The joke is that if you're of European descent chances are massively overwhelming that you're descended from Charlemagne and pretty much any other person 1200 or so years ago.
