Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Anyone familiar with Blink fitness? My choice of a gym is between them and Planet Fitness, and I really don't want to go to Planet Fitness because I read that this gym doesn't have any free weights. Which is like a war crime, or something.

Wow no free weights?? Well to be honest it does clear up a lot of red tape considering the amount of injuries that happen using them. Watch youtube....plenty examples of weight lifting injuries.

Yeah but it alienates people that want to seriously lift. Only using machines is limiting.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Planet Fitness has "all" the weights you need but the dumbbells only go up to like 50lbs. The benches are limited in number as well for benching or in the dumbbell area.no name wrote:MalkinIsMyHomeboy wrote:Anyone familiar with Blink fitness? There are only a limited number of plates.
There are a handful of machines for lifting, but not nearly as much as a regular gym.
It is like $10 a month. I joined one and it was just too crowded as there aren't enough spots to lift to get anything done, not enough real weights. But I went early am or after work
when I had that membership.
Nice, clean, affordable and has everything really. But not my gym of choice.
Might be a fine place if you can go during non peak hours.

I totally agree, free weights are the most effective form of lifting. My brother in law bought a soloflex or something like that with those resistance bending bars. I just laughed.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I'm a Planet Fitness member and I love it BUT I'm not there to lift a crapload of weights.
my PF has dumbbells up to 75 lbs and 3 weight stations like this:

there are also probably half a dozen benches and 2 racks of "dedicated barbells" that aren't very heavy.
if you're looking to seriously lift then PF is not for you. if you're looking for overall workouts and fitness it's a great bargain. my PF is only crowded in January and the first few weeks of February but I imagine every PF is different. PF WILL throw you out if you drop dumbbells and throw weights around like an Olympic weightlifter though.

This is why I can't lift at a gym like PF. For things like clean and press it's much safer to drop the weight rather than put it down. There are gyms designed for Olympic lifting so I have no complaints about places like PF and I actually think they are fantastic establishments.shoeshine boy wrote:PF WILL throw you out if you drop dumbbells and throw weights around like an Olympic weightlifter though.

Sir, might I recommend Crossfit, where you will have all your weight throwing needs fulfilled daily?

I read it. Sometimes a man wants MOAR weight throwing. Like in Afghanistan, where it's really hard to get weights, and the floor is made of plywood. Just go ahead and throw those puppies around wherever you want, it's your day Crossfitter.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Started a circuit trainging routine, WOW was i beat afterwards. one exercise per body part, start with the heavies lift. 60% of your normal 6-8 rep range, 30 second of reps then rest 30 seconds. Down't sound all that taxing but i was dripping sweat after my 4th circuit. I always like throwing a wrench in my workouts i get bored with the same ol same ol.
Example of what i did last night used only 50% of 6-8 rep range.
Calves 80 lbs 30 sec. of reps
rest 30 seconds
Squat 60 lbs 30 sec. of reps
rest 30 seconds.
Bench 60 lbs 30 seconds of reps.
rest 30 seconds.
until i did all muscle groups after a circuit was complete i get a 2 min rest between circuits.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Get to finally go back to the gym after a few weeks off for my ribs. I did a 5k in the meantime last week and was still a little tender/sore at the end, but I think all issues related to my fall several weeks ago are clear. Time was within a minute of my norm, so I'm officially taking myself off of the self-imposed IR.
As far as I can tell, I have three races left in the unofficial 2014 running year:
Pittsburgh Great Race (10k), 9/28. Surprisingly it's still open. I remember it sold out early in 2012. http://www.rungreatrace.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Lemieux 6.6k, coincidentally on 66's birthday. This course was mostly level last year, but it looks like they completely changed the course. http://www.mariolemieux.org/main/events ... mily-walk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Morley's Run 10mi, 11/1. I've been wanting to do this one for two years. Missed it because of a knee injury last year and was travelling the year before. Since there's a difference of about 900 ft in elevation from start to finish, you can probably imagine there is a ton of downhill. Beginning of the course looks like it's very gradual inclines and then takes you through the woods for about a mile or so, which is where you'll probably run into the majority of the downhill. A few friends ran it last year and said it was fun but needed more water stations. 3x over 10 mi is not cool. But if anybody is interested, here ya go: http://www.tribdemnie.com/contests/morl ... ation.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The new Subway 'Cropfit' commercial is a pretty accurate lampoon.

Puppies are much higher on the social hierarchy than Crossfitters in my neck of the woods.JS© wrote:dodint, this is how I read the last part of your quote before going back to re-read it.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
My favorite Xfit fail video is a team of 4 'athletes' are tethered to a car and they are pulling it behind them on a track. Then one falls down. You can pretty much predict how it goes from there.
On another note, I'm 6', 205. I've been working out much more regularly (that YAYOG stuff is fantastic) and my body fat is down 3%, but my weight is within a pound of what it was when I started. Is that difference lean muscle mass?

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Could be muscle, but 3% at your weight amounts to 6 pounds. Depending on when you started, adding ~2 lbs muscle per month is usually an upper limit. So depending on your diet, if you really lost 6 pounds of fat, and a lot of other factors, probably a combination between muscle mass and water weight.

That's what I was wondering. I certainly don't look or feel like I added that much muscle!

My stomach hates me right now. Getting used to the protein shakes again and it sucks. Thank god for smart phones and wifi.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Never been so crushed by a workout than the first time I did Plyo in P90X. I still feel shame from that workout.... I mean, there's a 1-legged guy crushing it, and I'm on the verge of a gastrointestinal evacuation.
