Re: LGP Science Thread
I was sitting on my deck last night when there was a brilliant flash of light. I was looking down at my phone and the first flash registered as lightning to me because of how bright it was. It took a fraction of a second but my thought process was, 'that was lightning...wait it's a totally clear night..." I looked up to see the end of the flash.
Now I subscribe to Occam's Razor so I figured it was probably a meteor or something like that. The problem was how BRIGHT it was. I had never heard of that or seen something that bright before. It freaked me out.
Thankfully it was on the news this morning.

Couldn't find a local story on it yet...

Yeah, I had no idea.
Not sure I totally buy the ideas in that piece, but it is interesting.

Potential applications that most interest Badding are those that would be vastly improved by having exceedingly strong, stiff, and light materials—especially those that could help to protect the atmosphere, including lighter, more fuel-efficient, and therefore less-polluting vehicles. "One of our wildest dreams for the nanomaterials we are developing is that they could be used to make the super-strong, lightweight cables that would make possible the construction of a "space elevator", which so far has existed only as a science-fiction idea," Badding said.

Another gem from Brady Haran and DeepSkyVideos:

It's so humbling yet rewarding to realize once again the incredible vastness of the universe -- the size, the age, the amount of stuff...
But there is also the appreciation for the amount of work scientists put into it (not to mention the work done by those wondrous astronomical machines).
I must admit, however, that I get a little upset when I think of what might have been accomplished -- what more we would know about the universe, our place in it, and, by extension, ourselves -- if we had taken those trillions of dollars wasted in the Middle East, Vietnam, etc., and put it toward research like this.
Meh. What're ya gonna do? Dick Cheney's gotta eat, too.

Bricks For Tesla

An hour into the campaign, they've already sold 2x their goal in t-shirts and 13% of the goal for bricks. (I bought a shirt, might yet sign up for an entry level brick)

Re: LGP Science Thread
Just a quick update on the Wardenclyffe bricks/shirts project thingy. After six days, they have hit 166% of their funding goal from the bricks ($331,842 for a goal of $300k), and sailed 13x past their t-shirt goal (5324 sold towards goal of 400). That's pretty impressive.
