Current book being read/just finished

Got business adventures from the library. For those that don't know, it was published back in the sixties and both bill gates and warren buffet call it their favorite business book of all time. It contains six or so stories about different businesses. John Brooks is the guy that wrote it. Also it was just recently put back into print. It's been a fun read so far.

I read The Leftovers this past weekend and i can't say that it was worth the time.It's one of those rare instances where a TV show actually improves on a book.

Interesting. How does that leave you feeling about the second season of the show? I thought the ending was pretty weak, but I think it was an ending designed for a show that wasn't guaranteed to be back.

Though taking a slightly different route, the first season basically ended the same way as the book. I guess that makes sense and the writers can improvise it from here, although I'm sure they have it planned out.

The Grimes character in the book is the mayor and it works a lot better to not only have him as a cop, but to completely split it out , with for the dynamic of him and the woman mayor on the tv show.
Also, Nora is unemployed in the book and her job (and what that leads to) definitely adds to the TV show.

This is hardly great television, but it has kept my interest. The book came across as a poorly executed Stephen King story.

I've just started Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom (he runs this institute for humanity and the future at Oxford), and I highly recommend it. He's discussing the likelihood of developing machines with at least human-level intelligence and the likely implications for society when/if this happens.

Read The Battle of Midway by Craig L. Symonds. It's a nicely detailed description of the battle, including backgrounds on the major leaders and players. I'm somewhat of a buff on WWII in the Pacific, but this book included plenty of details I didn't know, for example, the contribution of the submarine USS Nautilus, which while it didn't hit or sink any Japanese ships likely helped win the battle for the Americans. The Nautilus attempted a torpedo attack on the Japanese battleship Kirishima, but didn't manage to hit anything. The IJS Arashi was assigned to depth-charge the Nautilus, and while no damage was done it put the Nautilus well out of the battle. But after attacking the Nautilus the Arashi decided to head back to the main Japanese battle fleet (the Kidō Butai) at full speed, creating a large wake. That wake was spotted by Lieutenant Commander Wade McClusky—air group commander for the USS Enterprise—who hadn't been able to find the Japanese fleet. McClusky realized that the Arashi was mostly likely pointed straight at the Kidō Butai, so he turned his bombers in that direction and followed the Arashi's wake like a pointing arrow. Within minutes his dive bombers found the Kidō Butai and sank the aircraft carriers Kaga and Akagi.

Picked up Dr. Sleep at the library. It received good reviews on Amazon and elsewhere, but my diehard King fan buddy was pretty disappointed in it. Meh, I'll give it a shot.

I'd give it a 7/10. It was a good enough story on its own, but it feels a little forced and the sequel to The Shining has a pretty high bar. If you liked The Shining and Desperation you'll probably enjoy this.

Have you ever seen the movie, with Ron Perlman? I think it was made for TV and I haven't seen it yet. It's one of my movies that sits perpetually on my list but I never purchase it.

Loved the book. The movie was average as most book to films are. Very interested in Dr Sleep. The Shining was the first King book I read and I crushed it in one night during a snowstorm.

Just Empire Falls by Richard Russo. Second book I've read by him, Straight Man was the first, and it was one of the funniest books i've ever read. The characters in this aren't as absurd, so while funny, isn't as comedic. But I liked this one even better, I don't recall being as vested in the characters of a novel as I was with this one. Mysterious at times, and also takes a dark turn at one point.

Put the HBO miniseries on the netflix cue, look forward to watching the screen adaptation.

I've been meaning to read the book and had no idea it was also an HBO show. Straight Man is great, though it now hits a little close to home for me.

Picked up American sniper from the library last night, got about half way through it. It's not a well written book, but completely fitting of this guys story. There are times I'm reading this and have to remind myself that this is real life, I couldn't do what these seals do, they are superheroes.

Reading Anthony Beevor's Stalingrad. Very good so far.
