Re: Official Pearl Jam is Bad Thread
I know you think that's a clever end around but it's not. He sings manufactured pop aimed smartly at 14 year old girls, the music is 'catchy, but bad' regardless of his vocal capability.

Bad to you and me. Not bad to those teenage girls. Music taste is subjective and opinionated. Its not cut and dry.

That's such a vanilla stance. As mentioned before, Hitler had adoring fans. Guess he was good, it's all subjective!

I dont think so. When the entire market for his music ages and 10 years later collectively says "why did i listen to that?", the hypothesis that the music is bad is proven true.

I started listening to Pink Floyd when I was a tween so I don't have anything equal here. Before that I used to listen to Vanilla Ice and Kris Kross and I'd probably put Pearl Jam ahead of them. Maybe. I wouldn't put that other guy ahead of them, though.

McDonald's has sold billions of burgers, that don't make it fine dining.PensFanInDC wrote:I love it when people say that a band with millions of fans "sucks". They don't suck. You don't like them.

Comparing Hitler to music or Pearl Jam. Makes sense...dodint wrote:That's such a vanilla stance. As mentioned before, Hitler had adoring fans. Guess he was good, it's all subjective!

I think Seinfeld, South Park, Billy Joel, REM, and the NBA suck. It doesn't mean that to some people it/they/he does not.

Re: Official Pearl Jam is Bad Thread
Id say its about as reasonable as the idea that because some people like something, its not bad.
...actually its exactly the same argument...its like you two used the same madlibs.

My point is that just because you (the royal you) don't like something doesn't mean it sucks.

Re: Official Pearl Jam is Bad Thread
I get defensive about people saying this band/artist sucks because I'm a musician. Even though (evenflow?) most bands now a days make it because they have tons of friends and are average musicians doesn't change the fact that they have some talent.
The worst player in the NHL is leagues better than anyone on this board. He sucks compared to Crosby but he's a hockey legend compared to me.
Pearl Jam is not the best band ever. They are not the worst band ever. The original thread title is more apt than the "PJ sucks" argument.

Horrible comparison. I know people that are undoubtedly better than famous musicians. You could play guitar for green day for example.PensFanInDC wrote:I get defensive about people saying this band/artist sucks because I'm a musician. Re: Official Pearl Jam is Bad Thread
A buddy of mine decided to stop merely wanting to be a musician and taught himself to play bass. Practiced hard and with dedication and joined a band, then they started playing gigs and had somewhat of a following. This guy, with his love of music had the courage to try something new and then do it in front of a club full of paying patrons. They almost exclusively wrote their own songs and it was good, to me. I have great respect for him and what he did.
Brittany/Beiber/'BoyBandHere' are there because they have enough talent and look to get the job done, but they by and large don't play their own music, don't write their own lyrics, don't struggle to coordinate their gigs, etc. They're corporate and just show up. It's lowest common denominator musical manufacturing and will be forgotten in 15 years. Calling it quality because of raw viewership just isn't right to me. blackjack had the best analogy, to you those little McDs burgers are of the highest quality and have an enduring legacy because they sell billions. The truth is they sell billions because they're accessible and don't taste like much of anything so they agree with the largest base.
PJ music isn't my favorite. It's iconic in the context of the era and that's fine, because it's a reflection of one of the directions music was going at the time. I didn't start pushing back against it until July 7, 2013 or shortly thereafter.

Trust me that I know all about lesser quality musicians making it while others do not.
