Re: Let's talk about music
Sadly, I did not win free tickets to the Foo Fighters show at The Roxy for tonight's episode of Sonic Highways. Audible sigh.

Aside from Sandman, what else was on Metallica's playlist?

I would be fine if they never played Sandman ever again. It's a good song but almost everything else they have is better.

I've hated it since it came out. This blowhard that lived above me used to play it over and over then he would play this dreck and sing along with it:PensFanInDC wrote:lol I know. I bet they hate that song now.MRandall25 wrote:Gotta appease the masses though

No, I would put on some real noise like this and shake the building:

No one could have predicted that Time would eventually - 28 years after that record - rate a SWANS record as the 6th best of the year:

Re: Let's talk about music
Interesting topic. What are Metallica's hits? What is the definition of a hit? I would argue that before One they had none and that would be the only 'hit' on the album. After that you have Sandman, Unforgiven, and Nothing Else Matters (maybe even Wherever I May Roam). Load and Reload had maybe 2 each (Until it Sleeps, King Nothing, Fuel...)FreeCandy44 wrote:Metallica needs to do a No Hits tour.PensFanInDC wrote:I would be fine if they never played Sandman ever again. Re: Let's talk about music
We saw Iron Maiden a few years ago and they essentially did a no-hits set. It was awful.
A few years prior on the Somewhere Back In Time tour (see: Flight 666, awesome tour documentary) all they played were hits. It was spectacular.
Then again, that SBIT show opened with 'Aces High' --- a heavy metal song about fighter pilots introduced by Winston Churchill. At that point they could have played two hours of J-pop and I still would have probably liked it.

An interview with three of the original SWANS members with the 30th anniversary reissue of the debut FILTH:columbia wrote:No one could have predicted that Time would eventually - 28 years after that record - rate a SWANS record as the 6th best of the year:

The bassist has the lowest tuning I've heard in a rock band.

I've seen Maiden 5 times I think... best show was the Ed Hunter/"Reunion" tour where they basically played all hits/singles. Just an amazing, amazing setlist.tifosi77 wrote:We saw Iron Maiden a few years ago and they essentially did a no-hits set. It was awful.

The opening bands were crap, and we had to go to Cleveland to see it... but it was worth it.

Re: Let's talk about music
Finally just got around to finishing the Concert For Valor. Springsteen's solo set - specifically 'Born in the USA' - was amazing. I'm not even a Boss fan, but that was hair-stand-up-on-your-arms type of stuff.

For those who have HBO, I highly recommend the James Brown documentary that's on in demand. He comes off a real jag for the most part but it's a good watch.
The most sampled track in hip hop:

And for Shaf, it shows a 18 year-old Al Sharpton on Soul Train receiving an award from Brown.

Re: Let's talk about music
I just watched the LA episode of Sonic Highways. The Germs are one of the few old school American punk bands that I've always just tuned out. That stance remains true, but I guess it was kind of interesting.
I was hoping that they would dig in to the Minutemen, but oh well.
As I've stated, I'm not actually a Foo Fighters fan, but the song for this episode was my favorite so far.

Pope Francis invites Patti Smith to play at Vatican Christmas concert:
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-enter ... 60643.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;Patti Smith has been invited by Pope Francis to perform at the Vatican's annual Christmas concert, the Holy See has announced.
The rock legend, known as the 'Godmother of Punk', is one of 18 acts due to play at Rome's Conciliation Auditorium on 13 December. The concert will be broadcast live on television.
Smith's work often involves Catholic imagery and she met and shook hands with the "very interesting" Pope in St Peter's Square last spring.
