Started to read Horns. Wow, it doesn't waste anytime getting messed up and dark. Apparently the author (Joe hill) is Stephen Kings son. So far I almost feel guilty for enjoying it so much.

Just finished reading Mockingjay

I'm kind of pleasantly surprised how dark the book got in the latter third. Was kind of expecting a rosy finish but it was hardly that. Great trilogy.

Finished Nightmares and Dreamscapes a few nights ago. Need to find something new. I know he released one or two new ones this fall so maybe I'll look into that. I just decided what IT certification I'm going for next and ordered some material for that, but I doubt many would be interested in a Command Line Interface guide.

Highly recommend "ready player one". It's the not so distant future and the 80s are back in style and everyone connects to a virtual world ala warcraft to do everything. The creator left an Easter egg in the program and whoever finds it gets his fortune. Mayhem ensues. Very geeky pop culture throughout.

Confederacy of Dunces is one of my favorites. The story behind the author is pretty heartbreaking also.

I have now read three of his books and after 2000+ pages finally realized that I have yet to encounter an interesting thought in his bland and banal yet eerily captivating writing.

Yes. It is a autobiography in six volumes, if you like. That would be ok if his prose was better or his musings weren't high school level existentialism. Don't believe the hype.

If you like Cormac McCarthy, you need to check out John Williams. Both Stoner and Butcher's Crossing are excellent.

started reading Gone Girl. For whatever reason, I'm usually turned off by books that have diary excerpts within the story, but this has been really good so far.

Finished Dear Reader: The Unauthorized Autobiography of Kim Jong Il. The author constructed this "autobiography" by piecing together the official government propaganda released about Kim Jong Il over the course of his life. For example, did you know Kim Jong Il taught his teachers as a child; they didn't teach him? Did you know he single-handedly reinvented art, theater, film, and literature in North Korea? That he slept only two hours a night while single-handedly running the NK economy? Did you know that the servicemen on the captured USS Pueblo demanded to have homosexual relations with one another while they were being detained? Did you know it's "unhealthy" to eat more than two meals a day? All true!

The book's presentation is straightforward, and the author does not challenge the "facts" asserted about Kim's life. The impact of the book comes from the collective absurdity of those "facts." It's a good book. The only issue I have is that the Kindle version could use some better formatting. The paper book has a lot of sidebars and text boxes, and they are poorly integrated into the electronic version.
