1:03:00 on my 10k. Goal was an hour.
Somewhat disappointed, but considering the humungous big hill that was halfway through the race, I'll take it I guess.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
The newer Beahbody workouts from Tony Horton (P90X 3) and Shaun T (Focus T25) are all ~25 minute workouts with a few minutes of warm up/cool down. All the resistance moves can be done with bands. In fact, I generally use bands for all the upper body stuff and only use dumbells for heavier leg stuff. Once you get above about 40-50 pound equivalent on bands, imo they're somewhat dangerous. The only thing I'd use a really heavy band for would be in conjunction with a pullup bar to make it easier.columbia wrote:If anyone could point me to a good 30 minute or so workout with resistance bands (the kind with handles), it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Gym stuff is dirt cheap on Craigslist, especially this time of year. Excellent.
We're buying a house, and turning this space into a gym:
It's basically a sun room that is hard to find a use for in the winter, it should be pretty great. The pic isn't very good as there is a lot of space in there. High ceiling makes it ideal for P90X/Insanity stuff that my wife likes, and the floor is firm. I don't really care much about gym equipment from a branding standpoint so looking to fill out the freeweights with gently used stuff from CL.
The big expense will be the treadmill. I want gym quality treadmill that won't die when my 300lb frame attacks it. Suckers are like $3K-5K, though.

About ready to run a 5k in the middle of December on the North Shore, although saying that I'm gonna "run" might not be entirely true.
Pulled hamstring a week ago - again - and I think I'm getting whatever germ is going around. Might just be a half-jog/walk at best.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Have you ever used those select-a-weight dumbells? I think the ones from Bowflex are called SelecTech or something. I don't have the space for a rack of 10 different dumbell weights, and I find the idea of swapping plates on dumbells to be somewhat silly. But I don't know anyone who has ever used the dial-a-weight systems to know if they're worth the spend.dodint wrote:Gym stuff is dirt cheap on Craigslist, especially this time of year. Excellent.

That knee sprain was a freak accident that I probably couldn't recreate if I tried. It's finally better, where I haven't needed my knee brace since summer, nor have I even considered it as an option.
The hamstring thing was never an issue until a week ago, maybe two weeks tops from when I originally noticed it.

My foam roller came in the mail yesterday. For those who exercise, but don't commit much time to stretching, get one of these. Feels awesome.

I have a Rumble Roller, which is all spiky and nubby. Feels like some sort of ancient torture when you're rolling a particularly bad knot, but man does it work.

Nope. Let me know how you like it. Seeking a similar solution.tifosi77 wrote:Have you ever used those select-a-weight dumbells? I think the ones from Bowflex are called SelecTech or something. I've had one for a few months now and it's come in especially handy now that I've developed a shin splint refereeing basketball. I roll it before and after games and it's helped a lot.GSdrums87 wrote:My foam roller came in the mail yesterday. For those who exercise, but don't commit much time to stretching, get one of these. Oh god, I actually just gasped when I read that. I hate rolling my shins, so much pain for very incremental gain.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Anyone know of a good couple day cleanse that's not too involved? I've been eating like absolute crap since around right before Thanksgiving. Its catching up to me and I feel awful most of the day lately and my face is a bit too puffy looking. I was thinking of doing a 3-5 day strict no carb cleanse with just maybe some chicken/tuna and a vegetable every day along with tons of water. I know things like this aren't advised for long term but I would at least like to try and drop a bit of water weight initially just to start feeling better and not being so tired or bloated feeling. Something to help jump start an actual weight loss plan next week. Is something like this do able?

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
I listened to a podcast on Saturday about Enemas and Cleanses. Medically they don't have a lot of merit. I did a cleanse a few years ago and it succeeded in making me tired.
I feel exactly like you, though. Got off my routine when I moved out of the apartment and I feel like garbage.

you have too much sodium in your diet. cut that out and you will feel less bloated. never a good idea to cut water.

No I was going to up the water intake, I usually drink plenty as it is but hoping to kind of just flush my system out over a few days. I'm not dealing with making juices or mixes, so thought maybe just no carb, high protein, water a 4 or 5 days might kickstart me.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
Did some research today, and apparently Ironmaster makes good dumbells in the 5-75# range. Not exactly of the dial-a-weight variety, but you can apparently swap plates pretty quickly. I like the square profile (improvised pushup stand), and it has a 120-pound extension kit you can buy separately.dodint wrote:Nope. Let me know how you like it. I actually don't roll the shins. I roll the calves/Achilles at 3 different angles -- down the middle, on the outside and on the inside. My friends who are trainers advise against doing it right on the shins but work the calves/Achilles for better support. Tonight was the first time I did it before a game (and after playing golf this morning) and I got out of it with zero pain. So that will now become routine.

Re: Gym/Exercise Thread
So there's a boxing gym relatively close to me and I've always wanted to learn how to box. But its $55 a month and $10 a class (2 classes a week). And they're group classes too, so that's whatever.
My only other option is LA Fitness which will be $30 a month. I've had good experiences at the previous LA Fitness I was a member of, but that one also had a basketball court and swimming pool which this one doesn't.
I know the classic response is "do what you want" but I seriously don't know what I want. Would $75 a month be too much for just 2 group boxing classes?
