I was going to post the dude from the Stray Cats or Dave Grohls Nirvana kit to also prove my point.

Re: Let's talk about music
Someone just turned me onto the Elephant Revival Pandora station, which is absolutely awesome. Discovering a lot of new bands I like (them, The Fretless, etc), that I would have never discovered otherwise. Love the folk bands with string instruments

Free ticket to Marilyn Manson this Friday. Should be interesting. I've never really listened to anything other than what made it to the radio/mtv when I was in middle school.

Late 90s/early 00s in his prime, they were a hell of a live act.Kraftster wrote:Free ticket to Marilyn Manson this Friday. Should be interesting. I've never really listened to anything other than what made it to the radio/mtv when I was in middle school.

You'll likely be disappointed but if it's free, it's free. He's a shell of his former live self, most notably his voice.Kraftster wrote:Free ticket to Marilyn Manson this Friday. Coming in from IPP.
A couple months ago we had a discussion in here about the relative merits of certain guitar players. Shredders vs bluesmen and whatnot. The notion of what you don't play being more important than what you do play is entirely uncontroversial, so I was surprised to read this comment.PensFanInDC wrote:This is a perfect example of my hatred for (apparently not all) jazz and it's musicians. Such an air of pompousness that exceeds every other genre put together.count2infinity wrote:Often times in music, it's not about what you play, but when you don't play it (or so my jazz teacher said in high school).
This is not directed at c2i, but rather his jazz teacher.

I don't go for slow vs fast. It's an often biased argument. It's about quality. Malmsteen to me is quality first and foremost (and I could never figure out why people don't get him... his playing is breathtaking), but so is B.B. King.tifosi77 wrote:Coming in from IPP.

I've said before that this is one of the most raunchy intros of all time:

IMO, the first 16 seconds is perfection.

I heard a song by pavement or one of those other horrible clone bands from the early 2000s at sheetz after work. I wanted to burn the place down.

WK, for the cocktail hour of our wedding reception we did all swing/big band/proto-rock. 'House Of Blue Lights', 'Saturday Night Fish Fry', Glenn Miller, Louis Prima. So much fun.
I'm by no means anti-shredder; one of my all-time favorites is Steve Vai. But Malmsteen is one that just seems to exemplify speed for its own sake, rather than as a musical statement. Ego.
His technical prowess is unchallenged. But he doesn't really seem to be saying much other than, 'Look at how fast I can play this arpeggio'.Sarcastic wrote:Malmsteen to me is quality first and foremost (and I could never figure out why people don't get him... his playing is breathtaking), but so is B.B. And I do agree about Malmsteen, could never get into him as it just seemed like so much flash with no real substance

Last week while I was eating lunch at sheetz in uniontown I heard both Deep Purple's Highway Star and Superchunk's FOH pumped over the loudspeakers....weirdIdoit40fans wrote:I heard a song by pavement or one of those other horrible clone bands from the early 2000s at sheetz after work. Re: Let's talk about music
Ego, yes. Speed for the sake of speed, no. That's like saying the slower Blues players play slow for the sake of slowness. Everything is determined by the style of music. Yngwie's is Classical in nature and there are a lot of Classical composers that also enjoyed putting a ton of notes in compositions (Mendelssohn or Schubert, for instance). How can a neo-Classical guitarist play slow solos? There are actually faster players than Yngwie anyway. He is, to me, the most identifiable player in all metal just by his technique. No one sounds like him. Listen to the little details, the little pick scraping sounds or the little bends within notes. It's amazing how "alive" his playing is. Best vibrato in all metal, hands down. He does that the way Ronnie Spector would sing - wide and full of expression. His skill is remarkable, but it's his lyrical approach that stands out to me even when he is playing faster. Sure, I've seen him play too many notes at times and I've scratched my head because it even seemed he wasn't into it either, other than just putting on an act. But his real playing is incredible. I'll always have his back because, even though at times he may be guilty of overplaying, his reputation as just "speed" is not something I agree with.tifosi77 wrote:WK, for the cocktail hour of our wedding reception we did all swing/big band/proto-rock. I'm a fan of Vai's playing, but not his music. It doesn't speak to me.
