To be fair, like half of games in my library are games that I bought which I'll never play again (Aliens: Colonial Marines), or were free value adds that I got from buying other games (Arma, XCOM, Call Of Juarez, Deus Ex, etc.).

Nope. BIOS will recognize it immediately... You won't notice a thing with Windows. BIOS can sometimes prompt you with just a notification that the system has changed.

So it recognizes it, and everything functions...but are there any drawbacks or any confusion in the OS regarding the switcheroo?

I bought a couple of 6TB drives to stick into my "server" PC. This leaves me with 8 old hard drives ranging from 1tb each to 3tb.

Anyone have any cheap ideas for me to get some sort of use out of them?

Is there any way a non technical guy can figure out what ports (if any) are blocked by m router? My Tivo won't update since I got a new modem from Comcast. It connects but when it's downloading info, the connection is interrupted and the error msg directs me to make sure several different ports are not being blocked by my router or ISP. This is above my pay grade. ;)

Ugh, so I got all my of parts and after the first period of the Pens game went at it. The video I used as a guide was annoying because the guy went off ridiculously stupid tangents that had nothing to do with building the PC.

I think I was able to figure it all out and it turned on when I plugged it in (with the CPU fan spinning) but since the monitors I got only came with AVG and not DVI cables I couldn't test out the video

Took me about 3 hours to get it all set

IT Pros:

My desktop PC at home is not connecting to my wifi. The signal is strong as my laptop/ipad/iphone will connect fine in the same room. It has an internal wireless card.

Work your magic, IT pros.

Do you have the credentials to get into the admin console of your router? Usually you type "192.168.1.1" into your web browser address bar and then it will ask for a user and password. If you can get into the console then you can look through the tabs and see if there are any manually configured blocked ports. Do you know what port numbers it needs? If so it might be easier to go in and Explicitly Allow (whitelist) the port.

From: http://support.tivo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/402" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Outbound:

Code: Select all

TCP port 80 TCP port 443 TCP port 5223 TCP port 7287 TCP port 7288
TCP port 8078 TCP port 8079 TCP port 8081 TCP port 8181
Internal:

Code: Select all

TCP port 37 TCP port 80 TCP port 443 TCP port 1413
TCP port 2190 TCP port 4430 TCP port 5222 TCP port 5223
TCP port 5254 TCP port 5354 TCP port 7287-7297 TCP port 8000
TCP ports 8080-8089 TCP port 8101 TCP port 8102 TCP port 8181
TCP port 8200 TCP port 31339 UDP port 37 UDP port 123
UDP port 2190 UDP port 5353
IPs

Code: Select all

    208.73.180.0 through 208.73.183.255
    204.176.49.0 through 204.176.49.127
    206.112.115.0 through 206.112.115.255

Basically, check your blocked ports in the router interface and see if any of those are listed and then unblock them. If you read through that TiVo support page and are still having issues, post something more specific about where you're hung up, or give TiVo support a call.

This page has details on testing whether the ports are open:
Port configuration test (HD TiVo boxes)
http://support.tivo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/402" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If the test indicates that it is blocked, do as dodint suggests and go to the router config IP in your browser.

Kraftser, no. But if you learn it there is so good money to be made out there.

I remoted into a computer today and the client had 32GB RAM installed. They work with maps. Nice.

I tried accessing that IP via Firefox and IE but cannot connect. I tried looking up the IP address via a cmd prompt and it looks like 10.0.0.1?

For the router? Some do use different IP's. Look up your make and model and search for the admin IP.

Go back to the command prompt.
Type "ipconfig /all"
The Default Gateway is your routers LAN side IP.
Take that IP and drop it in the browser window.

I'm still getting 10.0.0.1 as the Default Gateway. Does this give any pertinent info?

What does the lease obtained/expires thing mean? The last time my Tivo updated was Feb 3 which was why that date caught my eye.

You can take that down.

Dropping http://10.0.0.1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; in the browser should get you a prompt for user/pass.

Routers at home are usually running a DHCP table which assigns IPs dynamically. The release/renew dates are the date your computer received its last IP assignment from the DHCP controller. It's possible your TiVo thinks it has a static IP but was assigned a new IP and it's confused.

Yeah mate.

There should be some tabs, and the port security stuff should be easy to spot. They could be listed as individual ports blocked or as a range. If you want to be doubly sure there is probably a way to put the ports from the CODE box above onto an Explicit Allow which would tell you for sure if it is the router or the TiVo.

If you don't get it by mid-May I'll drop by and show you. ;)

Just curious. What are you actually trying to do? Kali Linux is a free penetration testing build of Linux that has a bunch of built in forensics stuff. I haven't gotten around to fooling with them yet though.

Has it ever connected?
Is there a WLAN button anywhere on the casing? A slide switch or anything?
When you go to Device Manager are there any bad indicator icons for that adapter?
If so, is the driver installed and current?
Is the card seated properly in the motherboard?

That's all I can think of right now without knowing anything else. My money is on the switch or that something goofed up in the Device Manager.

My gigabit network was giving me about 15% of the speed it's supposed to. Fun task to figure out the culprit...nic adapter? Cables? Router? Switch? Other switch? After much running up and down stairs and contorting my body to mess with my setup, turned out to be a combination of my crappy fios router and, oddly enough, a stray cat 6 cable making an appearance. I didn't think a cat 6 cable would cause any issues. I guess you need the proper hardware to support it?
