thanks! I will check those out.Shyster wrote:Not necessarily all military, but I've enjoyed The Expanse series by James S. A. Also like the Odyssey One series by Even Currie. I haven't read the fourth book yet, but the first three were good. The series starts with Into the Black. Plenty of space combat in these:

The Mote in God's Eye is a classic of SF:

David Weber and John Ringo are prolific authors whose works are often in the military sci-fi genre.
I finished The Forever War, the author was a Vietnam vet who wrote this in the 70s and the parallels of war then and in the future hold up well. I don't know much about time dilation, but this was a really good way to get into it. At under 300 pages, this was a nice quick read that left me wanting more. Highly recommend

Re: Current book being read/just finished
Recently finished books.
The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler, Noir is an awesome style. I'll read the rest of the Philip Marlowe books for sure. This was pretty awesome from start to finish.
October 1964 by David Halberstram. The first baseball book I've read. A drawn out account of the Cardinals 1964 World Series title, Gibson, Mantle and Maris were hugely entertaining characters, and there was a lot going on in a social context that made this a story.
Dog Soldiers by Robert Stone. Follows a journalist during Vietnam deciding to smuggle a bunch of heroin back to the States. The story goes off the rails, I was definitely much more interested in the portion of the story that took place in Vietnam.
About a third of the way through the Wanderers by Richard Price. First I've read from him, good stuff, really interesting dynamic going on then. 1960's NYC slums.

Kenny the kangaroo took detective fiction in college and it was a ton if fun. The class probably read twelve books and they were all good. This gentleman suggests devil in a blue dress by Walter Mosley.
Also as far as baseball books go, everyone should read Ball Four.
Also, this gentleman read city of thieves. That was quite a dramatic trip.

That sounds like a great class, I think that's something that should be offered in high school or before to help kids get interested in reading. Do you remember any of the other authors?
City of Thieves is such good historical fiction.

We did a dashiel hammet (sp?) book and also watched the Maltese falcon
We read stieg larrsson (sp? again) book but not the girl with the dragon tatoo.
There was one book with a female detective protagonist but it is hard to remember
That class was almost ten years ago but devil in a blue dress still sticks out as a really compelling reas

reading a sttng book called takedown. I've read a couple of these before and they're quite fulfilling. This one centers on riker vs picard. And interestingly riker is teamed up with tuvok and ezri dax. Full spectrum enjoyment is expected

Re: Current book being read/just finished
After re-reading the Hobbit, I decided to read more fiction this year (I read a lot of non-fiction and professional/job related stuff I won't bore you with here).
Goodreads suggested I'd like Cornwell's Saxon Stories, so I started with The Last Kingdom (a very good place to start). If you like History Channel's Vikings, you'll probably like this series as it's based in the same time period and similar characters.
I'll probably alternate with some of the Bosch books - Michael Connelly's long running series now featured as an Amazon Prime series. Is it imperative to start at the beginning of the Bosch books? I'd like to start with the book that the series is based on (sort of) - City of Bones. Or should I start at the beginning?

I read Cornwell's 3 Arthur Books. They were excellent. If you read all of the Saxon Stories I'd imagine they'd lead into this series chronologically. Checking out his site he comments on them "I have to confess that of all the books I have written these three are my favourites."

Just grabbed this at the library. Can't waiteddysnake wrote:Highly recommend "ready player one". Re: Current book being read/just finished
Love this book! I got about 2/3 through it yesterday. The author was giving away the book for free on his website after it was passed over by publishers. To have it go from that to a full blown Ridley Scott film in a couple years has to be pretty amazing for him!Digitalgypsy66 wrote:Martian is great. The Martian was excellent. This guy knows his stuff (or at least reads like he does). Really impressed with everything. Easily one of my favorite books I've read in the last year. Check it out. I hope the movie doesn't screw with the main character, he was perfect.

Been reading some Raymond Carver short stories the last couple of days. I prefer novels so he hadn't really been on my radar until seeing Birdman. I got to the story that the play in Birdman is based on, it's the best one so far, but mostly they've all been really entertaining.

It's an Altman movie based on several of Carver's stories. Excellent stuff.

Re: Current book being read/just finished
Finished the first half of the book....man, this is an incredibly fun read. All kinds of dorky references to MMORPGs and whatnot that I love, but also a very compelling story/setting with some good social commentary as well. Can't wait to read the 2nd half.shafnutz05 wrote:Just grabbed this at the library. Can't waiteddysnake wrote:Highly recommend "ready player one".
