i learned over the weekend that the stoppers on blantons bourbon bottles are all uniquely different. each has a letter of blantons on it and if you put them in the correct order to spell 'blantons' it a sequence where the jockey wins the race

Yeah I've had it both ways. It's good both. You forgot the clove stems in the lemon slice though.

Glenfarclas is a Highland / Speyside malt with a lot of sherry/fruitiness to it, similar to Balvenie. I find it very smooth; good one for you to try.

Yup, love the Balvenie. Those both have the sherry tint to them, nicely done imo with subtlety. Macallan 12 and Oban are my current fave Highlands now, both are less sherry, more straight-forward malt smoothness.

I went to the liquor store today (had some cash burning a hole in my pocket from tutoring) and I wanted to get a good sipping scotch. I obviously had no idea what I was doing, so I asked a worker and they said, "scotch? hold on, let me go get Herbert." I was happy already as that was my grandfather's name (RIP, pap). I explained I would really like to try and get into scotch, looking for a good beginners scotch. "I got just the thing..." Hands me Balvenie doublewood 12. I knew I had heard that brand before, and here I see where it was. I'm excited to try it.

Opened the Doublewood... Let me preface this by saying the only scotch that I've ever had neat was Laphroaig 10. If memory serves, it was smokey and almost tasted like a bandaid. This however is nothing like that. This is sweet. I'm almost getting a burnt sugar and/or honey taste up front and a floral kind of lingering taste. I like this stuff, and that's a good thing because now I have an entire bottle to drink... just gotta find me a good lowball glass to drink it out of. Currently just drinking it out of a snifter and it doesn't feel right. lol.

I thought you might like the Balvenie (aka slapvenie). Really smooth, ideed. The Laphroaig is an Islay whisky, and is extremely peaty. To cut the peat, I like to mix Islays with something like vanilla cream soda, birch/root beer, crisp & sweet ginger ales.
