The Kotaku review of The Order is pretty scathing...

It's gonna be one of those games that people either love or hate, no in the middle. I'm still at least going to give it a shot.

I got an invite to the Planetside 2 closed beta for PS4. Should be interesting, as I played it some on the PC.

Re: Current video game being played
So I played through a bit of 1886: The Order...
So far I'm quite enjoying this game. Yeah there is quite of bit of QTE, and the cover and shoot gunplay isn't anything revolutionary(think a mix of Gears of War and Uncharted), but so far the game is fun for me and I'm digging the story. The game looks beautiful too, seemless transition from cutscenes to gameplay. Black bars don't annoy me either. I'm only 3 chapters in, but so far so good.

Really wish my local Redbox had PS4/XB1 games this would be a perfect weekend rental for me. I really want to play it but no way I can drop $60 on a game like this right now.skullman80 wrote:So I played through a bit of 1886: The Order...

Somehow through all of this discussion I managed to only just now discover that TO1886 is a PS4 exclusive. Bah.

Re: Current video game being played
I had trade-ins so I didn't really pay for it, but yeah ... hard to drop full price on what looks to be a short game. Worth a pickup though for most when the price drops. It really shows off the power of the PS4 as well. It's something to build on if it sells well and they plan to do sequels.ajh2298 wrote:Really wish my local Redbox had PS4/XB1 games this would be a perfect weekend rental for me. Re: Current video game being played
I have an unopened FIFA 15 for 360 that I really have no intentions of ever playing. Anybody know if there's any store I can return it to or exchange it for a different game? Unfortunately I don't have the receipt so it's probably a long shot.

Re: Current video game being played
Finished up my playthrough of the Order 1886 this morning. Enjoyed the game. It had it's flaws, but was fun to play for me at least. The audio/visual really immersed you in the world. It shows off the power of the PS4. Story was interesting. Never once even noticed the black bars after i started playing. Certainly a good foundation to build on for sequels down the road.
I feel like I got my moneys worth. Like I said before I enjoy linear game like this every once in a while after playing so many open world games. It's a nice change of pace.
I will be interested to see how they can improve with future games in this series. The groundwork is there for a great game.

Re: Current video game being played
Just finished the main story line of Dying Light. It was an impressively fun game. I don't think it'll have any sort of cult following or go down as the best game of the year or anything, but it was really good.
Some of the things I really liked:
-You have to build your character or you're gonna have a bad time. It might be a quicker game if you just run from mission to mission and don't do much to upgrade, but I'd be willing to bet the missions will be incredibly difficult if you do that.
-Most zombies take 2 or 3 hits to kill, even with some of the best weapons. Makes things a little more interesting, especially if you have multiple zombies coming at you
-You can kill zombies in very funny ways. for example: firecrackers draw zombies toward explosives, then shoot the explosive and boom, or stand on a ledge across from another ledge and just watch the zombies fall and kill themselves, or you can even grapple some of the zombies. During the final mission I was standing just outside a door near a ledge and threw about 20 zombies off the tower.
-When you kill zombies and then die and go back to a check point, for the most part those zombies are still dead when you go back, so you don't have to go through that all again.
-The parkour stuff is a lot of fun. Constantly thinking "I wonder if I can do this..." most of the time the answer is no, but sometimes you pull off some cool moves.
Things I didn't like:
-Having to fight against guys with guns, when you don't/can't have guns yourself.
-No fast travel available in a pretty big world.
-Sometimes the parkour stuff can be glitchy. You jump, catch a ledge, climb up and immediately fall without being given a chance to balance.

Re: Current video game being played
Batman: Arkham Knight received an M rating from the ESRB. I was already excited to play this game, but I absolutely love this quote:
Cannot **** wait to play this gameHill said Rocksteady is aware that some younger players might miss out on the game because of the rating, but that making the game more "mass market" would have been harmful to the story they want to tell.
"I'm not blind to the fact that [the M rating] does mean some fans will miss out... I don't want to be oblivious to that fact. It would have been wrong to water down the game and deliver a story we didn't believe in to keep the game 'mass market' or enable it for more people. We feel that's the wrong way to go about it. We said we love the story and we don't want to jepoardize that."

Yeah i like when game makers really want to put their vision forward and aren't forced or scared into taking stuff out of the game to get a lower rating. The game will still sell like hotcakes.

I'm not sure that's the greatest comparison, considering more people play that for the online gameplay than single player.shafnutz05 wrote:Exactly. It's a good comparison in terms of the impact of the "M" rating. The "M" rating does not stop 10-18 year olds from getting and playing the game (see: COD), so the impact will be minimal, and if anything will draw in more interest from hardcore gamers.
