Daylight Savings Poll

Post by shafnutz05 »

I am assuming most of you are familiar with the origin of DST (farmers), but I personally love DST. Give me the hour of daylight on the back end (when I am actually awake), as opposed to the front end any day. This article summarizes my thoughts nicely:

What say you LGP?

Keep DST year-round?
Keep non-DST year-round?
Keep it as is?

It has to be a very small minority that would not want this current setup...and even if they want the hour on the front-end for whatever reason, there's no case for arbitrarily changing your clock twice a year...it's one of the sillier things we do on a macro level...

Does it really make a difference if the sun sets at 6 in December and January, than setting at 5? Wtf are you going to be able to accomplish with that?

It was made for the farmers. I'd rather just get an extra hour at night over in the morning, but that's me.

I picked keep it because it really doesn't bother me much. If I had to pick one of the other two, I'd prefer to keep it year round.

This is the first of the White House Petitions I've considered signing.

Also, had a stalemate discussion at work today about this. Half said it was made for farmers (me), and the other half said it was so factories wouldn't have to use more candles in ye olde days.

I liked it before, when it was only half the year. Now it's something like two-thirds of the year.

I don't care about it, so I'd rather it never change. I don't care which way it stays though.

Actually not started by or for farmers. That's a myth.

Germans first implemented it during WWI in an effort to save scarce fuels.

I don't overly care whether it's on or off, but I'd prefer if we just picked one and stayed with it. I'm largely a creature of habit and this crap with changing the clocks seriously messes me up for awhile twice a year.

that's the argument in the Deadspin article...just leave it as is (DST).

I mean, the 24 hour clock is arbitrary anyway, in terms of where we put it.

As pointed out it was started during WWI, done away with, then restarted during WWII. And kept ever since. I've always believed it was for the farmers too. It was believed to save energy.
However, some western state has 2 counties that do opposite. One adheres to DSL. The other county dismisses it. (Can't remember which state.) Anyhow, the county that adheres to DSL actually uses more energy than the county that dismisses DSL.
So it's all for naught. Go figure.

I like it as is. The one hour change doesn't screw with me that much. And I enjoy when it's suddenly lighter out for an extra hour. Probably not very rational but whatev

Let's just keep it year-round (then it wouldn't be 'DST', just 'time').
I don't have any need for changing the clocks. Some might, I don't. IMO, Indiana and Arizona have it right.

Downside: in some parts of the country some kids, will continue catching the school bus in the dark.
Other than that, whatev.

I voted to keep as is, mainly because it doesn't bother me. Plus during the winter, my kids go to bed earlier.

But if I had to chose one or the other, I want the current set up where the light is at the end of the day when I'm actually awake.

I think the state you're thinking of is Indiana. This article mentions it at the top.

Ask me again in the fall and I'll be for it but man, this was a bad, bad weekend and start of the work week to start DST having a Taekwondo tournament in Atlanta that ran late, then west coast pens games Sat and Mon nights. I am still exhausted and I was just getting used to waking up and having some light to walk around. I know it will be back in a few weeks but this sucks in the short term.

DST is completely stupid. Keep the time as it currently is and be done with it.

It was intended to be implemented in Britain several years before WWI. Some guy was saddened at the sheer number of people who slept through big chunks of summer days, and also because he hated having his golf rounds cut short by the setting sun. (This discussion was on the radio show I listen to)
