Hey, I got to camp aboard a WWII aircraft carrier this weekend. Cub Scouts FTW!!!
We stayed in enlisted men's bunk beds, stacked 4 high. The bed above me was about 6" from my nose. Not much sleep, but pretty cool.

That's pretty awesome. Where at and which carrier? I don't know if I've ever seen you mention where you live. Patriot's Point in Charleston always did overnight camps on the USS Yorktown.Digitalgypsy66 wrote:Hey, I got to camp aboard a WWII aircraft carrier this weekend. Cub Scouts FTW!!!

Yeah, it's something I've wanted to do since moving to SC in 1990. I just needed an excuse (a son for a Cub Scout) to get to do it!
I think you can stay on the ship in groups of 10 or more, so you don't really need to be involved with Cub/Boy Scouts.
After the morning mess, we went out to Fort Sumter, which is always a cool experience.
Also at Patriots Point is the U.S.S. Laffey, a famous WWII destroyer that served until the mid-70s. It actually fought off of Guadalcanal, Normandy, and then Iwo Jima/Okinawa. Plus, a WWII/Cold War era submarine...which is claustrophobic city.
I don't know how sailors spent any amount of time on something so small.

Awesome, so it was Patriot's Point. I went there three or four times when I was stationed in Charleston. It's always an interesting trip. Never went on the Laffey for some reason, but going on the Clamagore is awesome. Always amazed me that hammocks were set up in the torpedo rooms with the expectation that sailors would somehow be able to sleep in there. Easily the most claustrophobic experience of my life. I found visiting the Yorktown to be much more enjoyable than the USS Intrepid in New York. The Intrepid has been heavily remodeled and is now more of a museum within a carrier whereas the Yorktown is treated as the museum. Really wish I was still stationed in Charleston when the Carrier Classic was held at Patriot's Point.

I was wondering how they configured the basketball court for that game. Thanks for sharing!
I know on U-boats, the crew loved shooting torpedoes not because of sinking ships necessarily, but it meant more bunk room!

The Battleship New Jersey does events like that, but I'm not sure I could contain my claustrophobia being that close to the next bunk.Dickie Dunn wrote:That's pretty awesome. How long will it take to get to 1,000,000?
Best guess?

6 months or more, if the current rate maintains itself and people don't start posting more.

Definitely thought Spotty Wifi was going to take the title. Very disappointed by Crabgrass's showing, they've got a small lineup but they're very pesky.meow wrote:

Re: General discussion thread
Photography question: Following on to my IPP about how every picture I took at an airshow yesterday was out of focus, I'm looking to get a bit more out of my big lens. It's this 70-300, and I don't know if I'd be better served getting a slightly longer lens (something in the 400mm-500mm range), or if I should get something like a teleconverter plus the version of the lens I have that includes vibration reduction. Are teleconverters even worth it? I'd almost always been using outdoors in good sunlight.

I'll have to check the metadata when I get home. It was a windy day and there was a lot of buffeting, so it could have been a slow shutter.Hockeynut! wrote:What was your shutter speed on the oof photos?
