Re: Political talk
Speaking of anti-Israel...
A rabbi stopped by my office yesterday and he and I chatted for about an hour. He's Israeli and during the discussion we talked about some politics. According to him, anti-Israel is the same thing as anti-semitic. That's just one man's opinion though but I thought it was worth mentioning given a previous discussion.

Re: Political talk
I've seen that sentiment before. A relative of mine is an ardent supporter of Israel, posting things on FB constantly. There are situations where I feel that the actions of the Israeli government are unjust and/or cruel to the Palestinians. I've told her that I didn't agree with her position and was called an anti-semite. These were subjects dealing with basic human dignity/rights. There's no middle ground or room for compromise.PensFanInDC wrote:Speaking of anti-Israel...

Did you ask him if being anti-Likud (Netanyahu's political party) is the same thing as being anti-semitic because that's what seems to have have brought out the charges in this thread.PensFanInDC wrote:Speaking of anti-Israel...

And that's ridiculous. One can be pro Israel and disagree with factions within the Israel government.Gabe wrote:I've seen that sentiment before. Re: Political talk
Well...doesn't anti-israel mean that you deny the right for the jewish state? So yeah, that can be seen as antisemitic. I don't think anyone here is "anti-israeal"

I didn't. I was more interested in the spiritual part of the discussion.Factorial wrote:Did you ask him if being anti-Likud (Netanyahu's political party) is the same thing as being anti-semitic because that's what seems to have have brought out the charges in this thread.PensFanInDC wrote:Speaking of anti-Israel...

If you're including my U.N. references then you are wrong. Those have nothing to do with the Likud party. The U.S. previously has been one of the only supporters of Israel in the United Nations.Factorial wrote:Did you ask him if being anti-Likud (Netanyahu's political party) is the same thing as being anti-semitic because that's what seems to have have brought out the charges in this thread.PensFanInDC wrote:Speaking of anti-Israel...

The term anti-semitic seems to be used to mean anti-Jew. I believe semite actually refers to people based on their language. Arabs could be Semites unless I'm missing something here.

Am I correct about the Semite term? I haven't really understood whether the anti-semitic term is generally used(and I've used it myself)Factorial wrote:Nothing to do with your post.Geezer wrote:If you're including my U.N. references then you are wrong. I think it's pretty well understood that "Anti-Semite" has come to mean "Anti-Jew".

That's my understanding as well. It's linguistic in nature, but basically includes indigenous peoples of the Arabian peninsula, parts of eastern Africa, and the melange of campfire camaraderie that is modern day Israel/Jordan/Syria/Palestinian Authority.Geezer wrote:The term anti-semitic seems to be used to mean anti-Jew. at 8 minutes, the laughs begin. unfortunately, the state representative isn't even paying attention during a 5 minute debate for some reason, so he can't slam down a colossally lame argument from the cop, but this is a good example of the typical flaccid s*** slinging from prohibitionists.
cops all over the country are going on TV to lobby to keep people in jail solely for the purpose of padding their bank accounts. it's really unbelievable that they get away with this.

People use alcohol as a social thing, people use pot to get high. What a blanket and wrong statement. Just wow.

Re: Political talk
see, there is a more eloquent argument that people make all the time. this clown didn't read the notes on it. it goes:
"alcohol is so culturally ingrained in our society that making it illegal now would be far too impractical"
that's what he's supposed to say. even though it's part of a stupid larger argument that it's the government's job to dictate that sort of decision.

Guy jumped the gun on medical maryjane.
It's beyond stupid at this point. I guess I still favor letting states decide but removing all federal penalties. The decisions should rest on who gets to sell and taxation levels. Taxes shouldn't be worse than alcohol IMO. Politicians will see this as a money maker though and I'd guess there will be federal and state taxes.
I would like to see buzzed driving laws be as stern as DUI but I'm not sure how the levels would be established.

Re: Political talk
i'm pretty liberal on this issue, but i do think the taxes should be high. much higher than alcohol. if someone is motivated by civil liberty, can't afford it, or is just a hippy activist, you can grow your own on the cheap and avoid the tax. but in a market where taxes are that low, the cost to get high is way too low. and i do think it poses a public health risk.Geezer wrote:Taxes shouldn't be worse than alcohol IMO. it's not the government's job to lock people up for personal choices like this, but there is a responsibility to manage public health to an extent. the efforts against tobacco are a good example of this in action.

Just don't light up next to me in a public place outside of designated smoking establishments or I'll punch you in the face. Same goes with cigarettes.
