I almost bought a Kodak Carousel 650 yesterday. I'm a sucker for vintage stuff and this was in production from '67-'72. My wife has a bunch of old slides from her dad's diving days that we could view with it. I decided against it because new bulbs cost roughly $50 and need special ordering. I guess I'll just have the slides converted onto a DVD or something. Anyone ever done that before? What kind of quality should I expect?

If you're talking 100's of slides get the bulb. Nothing cooler than slide shows.

Noise definitely makes an image look soft. It's hard to tell for certain at these image sizes but I'd say this is mostly a focus issue. None jump out at me as "motion blur" caused by the camera moving. That said, on the close up of the pilot in the cockpit, 1/320 is pushing it for a 300mm zoom. General rule of thumb for amateurs is 1.5x the focal length. What camera body are you using? If it's a crop body then your 300 mm becomes about a 450mm.

It's a Nikon D90 that I've had for six years or so. Strictly entry level, but more camera than I know what to do with (clearly).

I forget if I mentioned in the other thread, but the last two times I've gone out to air shows, the auto focus has had a hard time with lens attached. Very slow to come in at times.

D90 is solid. i used that for years before i upgraded. focus issues like that are all about the lens. but at an air show, it may be possible that it's going to be focusing at infinity no matter what because of the distance to the subject. i'd try a couple shots in manual focus with it set at its furthest limit. if it's sharp, then you can just blast away without worrying about focus for the rest of the day.

I tried that infinity focus thing once and wasn't totally happy with the results. I wonder if it might be useful to go somewhere where I can shoot (pictures of) aircraft and just sort of practice.
