The year I won my huge bracket pool ($10 buyin, $2400 win), I had all 1 seeds going to the Final Four, and I won thanks to the heroics of Mario Chalmers and the Kansas squad. I think winning that year has affected how I play brackets now, because I tend to get very conservative.

Generally if you just pick high seeds in your pool you'll do really well but probably finish outside the money. Picking crazy brackets will backfire unless you've watched a billion hours of basketball.

Got news for ya -- I watch a billion hours of basketball and with the exception of 2009, it hasn't done me a lick of good at this time of the year. I am kicking myself today because the reason for my big score in 2009 was picking Michigan State to the championship game. Since then, I've had a nearly blind faith toward Izzo in the month of March and it has often bit me. This year, I decided to go against them because of their poor free throw ability late in games. I wish I hadn't overanalyzed it. As a result, my top right quadrant of my bracket is full of black X's. It's all a crapshoot, really, and the matchups you hope to happen don't usually occur and then that totally changes how your original pick works out. Right now, I'm still banking on the 3 remaining 1's to get themselves to Indy.

It was funny that they thought they had a chance. That was an old fashioned spanking. But with multiple NBA draft picks/future starters on the roster at UK, it wasn't a matter of if they won, it was how many they would win by. In this case, by more than some in WV can count to.
