Paraphrasing, there are a lot of guys who are big and strong and fast in the AHL who look a lot like DOC does, but a lot of those guys don't turn into anything special in the NHL.
The bottom of the lineup has a fair number of fast/strong/big guys, but DOC needs to be more than that if the Pens are to do something with this season. He needs to score and feast on weak matchups, because right now any team with half a brain knows which lines need to be stopped.
I agree with this. I think he got to be a little overrated amongst us fans last season, because he was basically the only bottom-6 guy with a pulse, but he needs to show more to be considered anything above a solid 4th-liner.
I don't think he was overrated. I think his stock rose quite a lot this offseason because of his play in the World Championships. He was another highly sought after college UFA. He was a point per game player at Dartmouth, which, doesn't translate the same way to the NHL but still is a good indicator. He has also been a point per game player in the AHL, 73 games for WBS, 27 goals, 46 assists. There's nothing really for him to prove in WBS.
He needs to be able to score more, and maybe use the body a bit more to separate himself from the others. I think he is a bit of the Mike Sullivan "concentrate on defense, defense, defense" that hit guys like ZAR too. But, looking at his numbers last season, he had only 1 goal in 1 assist in 20 games where he got over 10 minutes TOI. He had 4 goals and 5 assists in the 26 games where he had 10 minutes or LESS TOI.
So if he wants to hold down a 3rd line spot (which is where he should be looked at to start the season)...convert more chances into goals, use his 6'3" body a bit more. If he isn't showing signs of that in the first 20 or so games...time to give someone like Poulin or Puustinen or Hinostroza types the chance instead.
