Will Sid pass Mario on the all time points list?

Post by Antonio »

He is closing in...does he do it before he retires? Seems almost certain he becomes the 10th player ever to hit 1600 (he could do it this year if he keeps it up...but we will see). Could he pass 66? 202 more points to go at this moment....

Does he? Do you want him to? A part of me does not want anyone to pass 66 but the other part of me wants 87 to get as many points as possible. Would love for him to hit 1600 this year (I figure it is about a 40% chance...I think he has about a 90% chance to 1000 assists this year, 40% for 1600 points and about a 10% chance to 600g).

Totally separate bonus NPR question...anyone actually think Ovechkin will NOT break the record? I know it is only 15 games or so...but could he finally slow down so much that he would need like 5 more years? Of course, I think he will play until he is 50 if that is what it takes.

I think he will.....BUT, he'll need to sign at least a 1 year extension to do it. He's 200 points away and currently has 67 games this season, plus next season. He's been averaging 80-90 points a season. I'm guessing he's around the 1590 to 1600 point mark when his current deal expires.

It could happen, but it is worth noting that Sid has already played almost 300 more games than Mario, and it will likely take him several hundred more to get there. The numbers Lemieux could have posted with a healthy career are simply staggering.

I mean, barring a career ending injury, he will certainly catch Mario. He's 36, and still on pace for his standard 80-100 point season. He is 200 points from passing Mario. He should catch Mario fairly easily if he plays through his 38 year old season.

A couple of years ago, catching Mario was my median expected result for Sid. Given his health the last couple of years, I would move the goal posts on that a bit. I think I would now place my median result at catching Ronnie Francis (1798 points). I'm not sure how important the all-time scoring list is to him, but if it's a strong motivator, I could see him stick around at age 40-41 to pad those late year stats a bit. He would likely have to play (and be healthy/productive) through his age 41 season to have a chance to catch Jagr (1921 points). I'm sure he'd still be pretty productive, even at age 40-41, and could likely get 40-60 point seasons if he were motivated to do so (Joe Thornton had 51 points at age 39, and 31 at age 40).

wow, taking a look at that list. How lucky are we as Penguin fans?

Also, the wrecking ball deserves a lot credit for what he has accomplished. Sometimes that guy can get overlooked.

Regarding Sid, I will make the bold prediction that he will finish 2nd in points all time; behind only Gretz

No doubt the best to play ever (in my mind).

Sid will most likely play until he is 40, so I say, yes.

Ovechkin will play until he breaks Gretzky's record or he drops dead, which ever comes first. I believe that is the only goal OV has now.

I voted no because the Penguins will miss the playoffs the next 20 seasons

That's what struck me as I looked at the all-time top scorer list. He played in so fewer games than everyone else. Forget about the injuries for a moment, you have to wonder where he would be if he hadn't retired for those full 3 seasons.
