Something is very wrong with this team. It’s embarrassing and surprising that they seem to have quit on the season already.

It's an organization-wide issue at this point, from the top down:

FSG: Hello from Boston. Everything looks fine from way up here. All is running smoothly. Attendance? Meh, must be an anomoly.
Dubas: I don't want to put a label on what we are doing, rebuild vs retooling, compete vs non-compete...mainly because...we don't know WTF we are doing.
Sullivan: I think we just need to execute better. Not sure if we should switch to hangings or firing squad.
Players: We all love each other. These guys are all great. We suck ass on the ice, but we all get along great. Rusty shakes for everyone!!!!

Players...not a chance. Careers are short. I don't think any player wants to purposely go out there and not try, unless you are trying to get a coach fired...which multiple players all claim Sullivan is the greatest.

Dubas and Sullivan...I could see them saying look, this is what we are going to try this season. Maybe it works, but it might not. And if it doesn't, it's not the worst thing in the world if we finish badly and pickup a top pick along the way.

Unfortunately, the optics are horrible. Penguins fans are relatively smart as a whole. I think the fan base would much rather Dubas and FSG come out and say they are starting a rebuild, and the coaching decisions (ie, playing Pickering or Shea or St. Ivany over guys like Graves and Grzelcyk) support that direction.

Instead, we are stuck in this weird black hole where the team looks awful night in and night out, we get a whole bunch of random, repeated lip service game in and game out, yet nothing changes.

Is Dubas really okay with this mess?

I imagine he’s handcuffed with Sullivan and most of the roster. He did himself no favors with the Karlsson trade but most of the FA signings have been short term. Almost like he’s trying to bridge the gap to see if anyone from the farm system can help.

We know they can’t play him, they need Nieto, Hayes, Acciardi to do something close to nothing as the 4th line.

What message would be acceptable though? They’re in a bit of a bind because they make yearly stupid player personnel decisions, have a coach past his lifespan, and an organization that’s a mess. The truth might be an entertaining press conference.
