Seems like the throw spaghetti to the wall and see what sticks. Problem is, and always is, Sullivan. KD will get 3 Tomasino's and 3 Nieto's expecting one of each to make the team, but Sullivan will play all 3 Nieto's.

Re: Penguins Trade Deadline: Buyers and Sellers?
Let’s be honest - as a club we destroyed Ron Hextall and Brian Burke as they were told to keep us in the hunt for cups. When we were done. Those guys get S canned for this GM who gave a mediocre keeper 5 million a year. We need a GM / and all staff work together. Yup I criticize Sullivan too, but I am sure he did not want half these mumpties that we signed to long term contracts, no trade clauses. Never mind the 1 season wonders we pick up.
As a fan I can rant away, so much about this club disappoints at the moment. Failings to bring back jagr adds to another group that has seemingly lost direction. I hate the caps, been a painful season! One of our empty wins though!

Re: Penguins Trade Deadline: Buyers and Sellers?
So far, Dubas has made only 2 big mistakes, which were the Jarry and Graves contracts. If he gave Jarry 5.375M for 2 years, it's not looking so bad at all. But giving him both $$ and term was the issue. On Graves, I thought he would be much better, but others warned that he was a product of a system or who he played with. On Graves, I think there were multiple teams interested, which forced Dubas to go longer term than he may have wanted. Again, if Graves contract was only 4 years instead of 6, we'd already be halfway through it.Bo_Pens wrote: Fri Jan 17, 2025 4:03 pmLet’s be honest - as a club we destroyed Ron Hextall and Brian Burke as they were told to keep us in the hunt for cups. I was going to put Karlsson here, but, for as bad as he's been, we still ended up clearing out a bunch of Hextall's mess, dumping Granlund, Rutta, and Petry.
But, I'd also say Sullivan has a voice in this. Dubas isn't going to just go grab a player in UFA or make a trade, and THEN ask Sullivan if that player works. They talk. Sullivan has input. At times, Sullivan may ask for a specific player (Chychrun), but a lot of times it may just be "I need X type of player who can do 1,2, and 3," and then it's on Dubas to see if he can find that piece.

With Klingberg to the Oilers and Nemec possibly on the trading block, where would Pettersson go, or what team would trade for him. Options maybe dwindling.

I'd look at Dallas as one. Pettersson is a clear upgrade over Brendan Smith on a 3rd pairing.Wyopen wrote: Fri Jan 17, 2025 4:35 pmWith Klingberg to the Oilers and Nemec possibly on the trading block, where would Pettersson go, or what team would trade for him. Options maybe dwindling.
LA would be another. I'd play Pettersson 2nd pairing over Joel Edmundson.
I could also see both Calgary and Vancouver as destinations for a blockbuster Pettersson and Rakell trade.

Out East, Washington, Toronto, maybe Florida. Pettersson is going to likely be a 3rd pairing guy on a lot of these teams, but he's an exceptional 3rd pairing guy...huge upgrade over what a lot of these teams have for their 3rd pairing LD.

Re: Penguins Trade Deadline: Buyers and Sellers?
You have to wonder why Nemec is on the trading block. He's 20, had what looks like a decent season last year and this year can't be out Kovacevic as a top 3 RH? Perhaps NJ thinks he has a flaw that needs improved and if that's the case, trying to force a trade ism't going to look good.Wyopen wrote: Fri Jan 17, 2025 4:35 pmWith Klingberg to the Oilers and Nemec possibly on the trading block, where would Pettersson go, or what team would trade for him. Nemec is in a totally different trade position than Pettersson and I can't see one affecting the other.

In recent terms, I am very sure Sully wanted Acciari, Jarry, Rakell, Geno, Letang and of course Sid.
Graves and Karlsson I have doubts about whether Sully wanted them. But Karlsson we picked up via trade, as we did Hayes and Bunting.

I am surprised to hear that FLPF. I've pictured Pettersson as more of a solid 1/2 pairing guy that pairs well with an elite offensive dman.FLPensFan wrote: Fri Jan 17, 2025 4:43 pmI'd look at Dallas as one. I get that contenders would most likely already have established guys in the top 4, it just seems like quite the luxury to have a guy like Petey on a 3rd pairing.
If teams are looking at him as more of a depth defenseman than a solid top 4 guy, I'm definitely going to be disappointed in the return.

LA - Edmundson and Anderson
VAN - Hughes and Soucy
CGY - Weegar and Bahl
Pettersson is not better than Heiskanen, and probably not better than Lindell.
In LA, I could see Pettersson playing above either Edmundson or Anderson.
In VAN, he's not playing above Hughes, MAYBE above Soucy
In CGY, he's not playing above Weegar, probably above Bahl.
It's not that teams see him as only a 3rd pairing or depth guys; moreso, a lot of teams have 2 solid top 4 LD, but their bottom pairing guy is weak. It all depends on how the team views their guys, but on the surface, there are teams where Pettersson might only be a 3rd pairing and PK guy, and teams where he would fit in their top 4.
I wouldn't say this is the complete list, either, but more the top potential destinations I see.

Ok, so for 2 of the 4 he'd most likely be on the 2nd pairing, Vancouver maybe, and Dallas probably not. That's not so bad, and not too far off from what I was thinking.
I guess it doesn't matter where he slots, as long as the return is sufficient.
Hopefully there are some other suitors (or injuries for that matter), and we can get a bit if a bidding war going.

Re: Penguins Trade Deadline: Buyers and Sellers?
Regardless of the actual return, he must be traded.
His contract expires. He's currently 28 and in his prime. Expect him to look for 4-6 years and a bump to at least 6.5M (no idea where the numbers are at, but he's worth more than current contract AAV), probably some type of NTC or even full NMC to compensate for leaving money or term on the table and signing for a team that won't compete for a cup.
Makes no sense, like keeping and trying to resign Guentzel would not have made sense. If I were Dubas, I would talk to the guy and his agent informally. Get an idea if they are willing to get robbed on a 3 year 5.5M deal or something. And even then you need to wonder if that's the right move. Probably still isn't.
Trade him for the best offer.
I'll disagree with FLPFs assesment that he's a 3rd pair guy on contender teams. Penguins rely on him to carry first pair minutes and responsibilities and give him either Letang or Karlsson to compensate for. Unburden Pettersson and have him in a normal 2nd pair assignment. I've bet against MP for a long time after we acquired him and I have long since eaten that crow thank you very much, it was delicious.

Trading Pettersson is definite, but they should be looking to trade Rakell. He's at peak value it should be a no brainer. I've lost a ton of confidence in Dubas this deadline will be interesting

Re: Penguins Trade Deadline: Buyers and Sellers?
That's not exactly what I said. A lot of teams that may be interested already have solid top 4 d-men, but have a weak bottom pair. Most teams don't have the cap space to have a strong solid 3rd pairing all year round. Unless a team has a major injury to their top 2 LD down the stretch, Pettersson may have to end up being utilized as a 3rd pairing guy as a rental.Puck-Lurker wrote: Sun Jan 19, 2025 1:07 pmI'll disagree with FLPFs assesment that he's a 3rd pair guy on contender teams. I don't think that means his return would be diminished. The cost is the cost, it's not up to the Penguins to take less because the acquiring team wants to use the player in X way.

Jake was a UFA with no guarantee of re-signing, and he didn't. If a team trades for Rakell, they are getting him for the playoffs this year plus 3 more seasons. The return for Rakell probably be very similar...good assets because of the term left. Re: Penguins Trade Deadline: Buyers and Sellers?
There is no reason for the Penguins to go after Miller. If they do it will be a costly mistake. They don't need a top center, he's expensive, he's signed for three more years, they don't have what it should take to get him. Sounds like a typical Eklund rumor then.Maestro wrote: Sun Jan 19, 2025 3:37 pmMiller would be an interesting “one last shot” addition, and Dragon & Purple Hayes would be close to a cap match.KG wrote: Sun Jan 19, 2025 3:29 pmhttps://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Eklund/ ... g/1/127242
