With what the salary cap is expected to increase to, I think Dubas should keep Rakell and Rust and see what the trade market looks like next deadline. We don’t need to have all the picks in this years draft.
I agree.. I would like to keep that line together, unless Rusty or RR demand a trade to contender
Someone offers me a 1st without top10 protection and a B level prospect, I would deal. A protected 1st and a really good prospect, I move them

Not both of them though, I feel Penguins need at least one to remain on their roster. I also don't see Rust and Rakell increasing in value over this season.

If someone makes a solid offer for Rakell, Dubas should jump at it. Rakell has been a very up and down player in his career. He's having a very up year. Sell while the asset value is at its highest.

Not sure if anyone posted this, but I saw something today from 4th Period, from a few days ago, saying "sources" say Rust has not been approached about any potential trade, but he is willing to have a discussion about it for the right situation/destination.

Get a good offer for Rakell before the deadline. I would wait close to the deadline to see how the Rangers are doing. If the Rangers looked prime to keep the 2025 1st and give us the 2026, then I would get a 2025 1st for Rakell. Otherwise, I'd flip it and look for a 2026 1st. I also want to see Dubas get at least one 2025 2nd rounder. If he can get a 1st and a 2nd, over the next 3 drafts, Penguins would have:

5 1st round picks
5 2nd round picks
7 3rd round picks

That's exactly the type of draft war chest I wanted to see Dubas build. You can use multiple 3rds to move up into the 2nd round. You can use a variety of picks to trade for another player. Gives Dubas tons of options.

So he is doing well now as a GM? Has he finally found a direction and plan?

Sounds like the stars just traded for Ceci and Granlund sending a 1st the other way. Stands to reason that the Stars were also in on MP trade.

Until he fires the moron, he's either a powerless eunuch or a moron himself regardless of the moves he makes. It's a fine trade but overall from his day 1, I'm not overall positive on KD. I was caught up in the hype when we got him and didn't really know much or look into the history and he has so far not lived up to the hype for me. I'm happy with the trade though.

No.

Good trade though. And he's made a bunch of nice moves before.

Sullivan is still here. So are some of Dubas' messes. Overall GMKD is slightly south of meh for my taste.

Needs to make a few more good moves this season to end with a plus for me. Or.. FIRE SULLIVAN

Imagine that...wins don't really matter though because as we all know, they don't have Sully so they are still searching for him.

They must've been lucky to get one of the other top 2-3 coaches.

The way I see it, there are kinda 3 components to Dubas's tenure:

1) Keeping Sullivan. This is weird and indefensible.

2) Trying to prop the window open one more year in 23-24. I think his moves going into that season weren't good overall, but they weren't horrible either. Eller and Nedjelkovic were pretty good pickups. Acciari and Nieto were bad but don't really matter that much. Karlsson was good in theory and enabled them to dump some bad deals, but he has underwhelmed in practice. The Graves and Jarry contracts were bad and costly going forward.

3) Gathering assets for a rebuild, which started with the Guentzel trade. Here, I think Dubas has done pretty well. I don't know that he's really ripped anyone off in terms of an amazing return, but I'd say he's been above average in this phase.

That said, tearing down by selling off vets and weaponizing cap space isn't that hard for any halfway competent GM. I think Dubas will really be defined by whether he can take the assets he's accumulating and use them to create the core of another contender.

Some comments on each:

1) My new theory: Sullivan has missed the playoffs 2 years, about to be a 3rd year. Maybe this is the best way to get better draft position without publicly stating we are rebuilding and bottoming out. Let Sullivan run his course, which by default, means a playoff miss and potential top 10 pick. After this season, Sullivan has only 2 years left on his contract. My hope is Dubas has 70-80% of his rebuild done this summer, and then Sullivan needs to spend next season producing results or keep looking over his shoulder at Kirk MacDonald. MacDonald is having a good first year. Team is doing well, almost every prospect is developing and improving under his watch. But this is his first year as AHL head coach. See how he navigates the rest of this season and next season, and if the results continue, let him become head coach....he'll have already worked with a good number of Penguins of the future like Pickering, Blomqvist, Murashov, Larsson, Ponomarev, Koivunen, Broz, etc.

2) My expectation / hope is that Dubas moves Rakell for either a young top 4 d-man like Nemec or Clarke, or a young center like a Cozens or McTavish. Then we draft a center in the top 5 (and trade picks if needed to move up), like Misa, Hagens, or Desnoyers. Brunicke continues his good play and forces his way on the team. McGroary, Koivunen, and Broz force their way onto the team or at least have 2-3 spots to battle for amongst them. Add in a good top 6 winger in free agency, and trade EK65 over the summer. A lot of pieces, but, if he can accomplish all that, this rebuild on the fly may not be such a far fetched idea.

3) He's done well with the Guentzel and Pettersson trade. I expect a lot of the draft pick pool he has to be used to acquire more young NHLers when possible, versus actually using them as our own draft picks. We could even see guys like maybe a Lucuis, Fenstrom, Ilyin types moved along with picks to acquire young NHL talent. Again, doing this, versus drafting and waiting 2-5 years for those draftees to hit the NHL, helps quicken the rebuild process.

I would also say that, when we rebuild, Penguins fan may need to stop thinking in terms of 15-20 year playoff run style rebuild. If Dubas can get it right the first time, it may only be a 3-5 year playoff run before a total tear down is needed. We are overdue for less lengthy string of consecutive playoff years, just like we are well past overdue for a run without an Art Ross/Hart trophy winning generational talent on our team. That may be the biggest adjustment for some older fans.

Yeah, I had similar thoughts on how a quick rebuild could ideally go. I was just thinking adding another down year next year. Get a top pick this year, and then next year figure out which of the young guys in the system can actually form part of a good supporting cast while also sucking enough to get another top pick. Then, going into the 26-27 season, they'd hopefully have 8-10 young guys as a good supporting cast, 2 top draft picks who are legit 1st-line/top-pairing talents right out of the gate, and maybe some of the old guard hanging around (e.g., Crosby, Rust, and Letang). Finally, with the cap going up and not having many big deals on the books, they could really go after a couple top tier free agents that summer to supplement the roster.

I think quality supporting cast is the hardest to get, since they're the glue of a team. Bad teams get top picks and top talent, so that's usually a given (not 100% of course). Edmonton had all those superstar picks, but no supporting cast and went nowhere. Penguins came together quickly because they got guys like Kunitz and Dupuis.

I was just going to comment on the same thing. So much for gaining experience. This is the very reason I’m concerned about bring up the kids. They’ll just sit.

Let me continue my comment. After two plus weeks of sitting, MS will expect Blomqvist to be on the top of his game and pitch a shutout. Also this is exactly what happened last year, Ned played every game towards the end and burned himself out.

No, if he wants a shutout, he will play Ned.

The only goalie with a shutout this season.

One.

One shutout.

Honestly, if they simply wanted a warm body on the bench while Ned starts, they should have left Jarry there. They are paying him the same regardless.

This is where Dubas needs to interfere and demand he play our hot prospects.
