Whats with the Sullivan love affair with Glass?? I dont get it.. I really dont! He is playing now for a long time on 2nd line without any effect, yeah he got bumped for a game or two on bottom 6 lines, but mostly he is playing 2nd line RW or C for a while! 12 games without a goal..
I'm pretty sure any other forward would have 50% better results at least with soo much time with Geno ,as he has so far into the season..

Tomasino is someone who is compelling when I think about the top 6. He's not going to score 30 but he could be the Dupuis type of top 6 guy who can score enough, is fast, and plays a tenacious game. Also, he's cheap, which helps the bottom line when spending on other positions. Swap lines with him and Glass, who might not be a bad bottom 6 guys. He's playing over his station right now, and it shows.

I agree. I'll admit, I was excited when we got Glass. I believed he had untapped potential and could be a decent middle six center. I also thought he had a golden opportunity when Eller was dealt (which by the way seems like an eternity).Pens4Life wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 11:14 amWhats with the Sullivan love affair with Glass?? I'm now of the opinion of not qualifying Glass as a RFA and letting him walk. I'm coming around to doing the same with Joseph. Despite their ages, we need to start cutting bait with guys who really don't do much and haven't really progressed.

Tomasino has nice hands, energy etc.......exactly the type of player we should have going forward. I predict he will stick and excel on this roster......if Sullivan moves on.
Glass I think is milktoast, but I don't hate his game for some reason. Just think he should be on the third line with Lizzo.
I'd also like to see Boko stick on the 4th line next season......I like him regardless of any skill deficiencies.

He's young, former 1st round pick (late), he definitely has some offense in his game. We have no clue how he might progress in another couple years. He's one to keep for sure. He might turn into the next Rust or Rakell for all we know, which would be cool with me.ahawk9 wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 11:19 amTomasino is someone who is compelling when I think about the top 6. I heard Cody Glass's idol growing up was Matt Nieto. Patterned his whole game around Nieto.thehockeyguru wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 12:55 pmHes definitely miscast, he's a 4CPitts wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 12:35 pmHe plays a good defensive game. Period. Glass was a good scorer in Juniors. He had 32 goals, 94 points for Portland of the WHL in his draft year, and 37 goals, 102 points points the year after he was drafted 5th overall. It's just never translated at the NHL level. He's a good player, but not for the top 6. He's best suited for the 4th line, and an occasional move up to the 3rd line. Sullivan is misusing and overusing him.

I wouldn't give Glass a QO this summer, but I would be open to him returning on a 1-2 year deal to play 4C

Same. Bring him back for 1-2 years, 1.5M. Takes a 1M paycut. He's not worth much more than that with his production, even with good defensive numbers.thehockeyguru wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 1:15 pmI wouldn't give Glass a QO this summer, but I would be open to him returning on a 1-2 year deal to play 4C

The goal for next season has to be to maximize the return on the Impending UFAs. I'm curious on your take of how you would do that assuming they are all Penguins after the deadlineFLPensFan wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 1:30 pmSame. Bring him back for 1-2 years, 1.5M. Glass and Tomasino seem to be polar opposites of each other. Young, good skaters, but Glass is good defensively, responsible, but has shown no scoring ability at this level, and Tomasino can put the puck in the net, shown great hands in tight spaces, but leaves a bit to be desired in the defensive end.
Either way, I like both players, just hate having so many other similar guys that only do one thing good, and other things just okay (Glass, Tomasino, Heinen, Bunting). Takes up a lot of roster spots.

Yeah, cheap short deal for 4th line spot, thats it.. if you ask Sully he would sign him to 4yrs,3M per dealthehockeyguru wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 1:15 pmI wouldn't give Glass a QO this summer, but I would be open to him returning on a 1-2 year deal to play 4C

Dont give him QO.. Ponomarev could probably do the same for half of money on 4th line.

Agree but those are the younger guys who end up being available. The idea is that you hope to hit on one of them and they develop another tool in the toolbox. I just don’t think we’re good enough in the scouting and development department to make a good team doing this. Unfortunately we’re limited to hoping we get a top three draft pick the next few years lolDeHaven162 wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 2:54 pmGlass and Tomasino seem to be polar opposites of each other. Um, this will be interesting. They gave a conditional 1st (either their 26 or 27 1st goes, whichever they have left) AND they gave up goalie Spencer Knight. It looks like Florida is over the cap AND doesn't have a backup goalie on the roster AND only has 21 players on their roster.Pruezy11881 wrote: Sat Mar 01, 2025 8:16 pmSeth Jones off the board. I was going to post earlier today that because of Grzelcyk's cost and ability to play both sides, he might have been a good fit for Florida. Gotta see what else they do, but Florida needs a goalie and to offload more cap space. There have long been rumors that Florida will not re-sign Aaron Ekblad, but he's their #1 d-man today. I don't see how they could possibly ship him out and get better this season. Very little else cap wise that FL could part with.
I don't like this move for Florida, but I'll wait to see what else Zito finishes with in terms of moves.

McGroarty with another goal tonight. He now has 4 goals, 6 assists, 10 points in his last 8 games.
Koivunen with another goal tonight. In his last 17 games, Koivunen has 7 goals, 14 assists, 21 points.
Both of those guys should be given every opportunity to win a job in training camp next year.

Two Penguins trade items tonight, one one Rakell and one on Letang....
--On Rakell, I traded some tweets with The Mayor tonight after he tweeted out that LA Kings first round pick is rumored to be in play. If you don't know who the Mayor is, he's been covering the Kings for years, frequently on SiriusXM NHL Network, other podcasts etc. I asked him if the Kings would have interest in Rakell, and he said a few weeks ago he mentioned Kings should be one of the top 2-3 targets of LA, if not the top. I followed up by asking about Greentree or Clarke being in a package for Rakell. He said he doubts LA moves either player in a trade. Take it for what it is worth, but the guy knows LA stuff. I'd also counter that, we know PIT stuff, LA's system is ranked lower than ours, and after Greentree, their 3 best prospects are goalies. Only other possibilities I would take from LA would be Laferriere (if Dubas thinks he can continue to increase production) or Spence. I'd want a 2026 1st rounder if either of those guys was the "player" return in a Rakell trade.
--On Letang, it's a quick one or two sentence, but, Kingerski noted that as they cleared out after the game today, it was just Kingerski, Letang, and a Penguins PR person leaving the locker room. Kingerski mentioned what Karlsson had said about deadline being stressful. Letang said something to the effect of it's a business, he's known since he was 21 he could be traded at any time, and basically said "Whatever happens, happens." Kingerski noted this was much different than the tact Crosby and Malkin took, both reaffirming they had no desire to move elsewhere.

Kings are up against the cap, so the salaries have to largely cancel out. They have like one to 1.5 mil in space. Also, we only one contract spot available, so unless we move some others this trade deadline (which seems likely) we can't add more than one extra player under contract.FLPensFan wrote: Sun Mar 02, 2025 10:03 pmTwo Penguins trade items tonight, one one Rakell and one on Letang....

Ship out Beauvillier for a 2027 2nd (by kicking the pick 2 years down the road, may be easier for a team to give a 2nd instead of a 3rd)
That frees up 2 roster spots and puts the Penguins at 47 contracts.
Rakell to LA for A) Greentree, Jeannot (cap reasons) and a 2026 2nd OR B) Laferriere/Spence, Jeannot, and a 2026 1st round pick
That would put us at 48 contracts (Rakell out, down to 46...Laferriere or Spence plus Jeannot in, up to 48)

I don't think Beau gets us a 2hd even in '27, I could see a 3rd, preferably for '26. Grzelcyk might get us a 2hd, hopefully for '26. I think your valuation is pretty good though. I suggested Gryz + our worst 5th this year, for a '26 2hd.FLPensFan wrote: Sun Mar 02, 2025 11:02 pmShip out Grzelcyk for a 2025 2ndMichael74 wrote: Sun Mar 02, 2025 10:26 pmKings are up against the cap, so the salaries have to largely cancel out. If we're trading Rakell, for me anyway it starts with a '26 1st. Although Greentree is intriguing I must say.

Re: 2024-2025 Season Random Penguins Fodder
I'd rather have the young NHL player or existing prospect than the 2026 1st. It's a good trade chip, but, if you trade Rakell to a good playoff team, that 2026 1st is likely to be in the 20-32 range. You get a decent player that may be 3-5 years away from playing. I think Dubas is looking for quicker results. If teams are offering 1st round pick or (A-lvel prospect that is closer/under 24 already NHLer), I'm taking the latter almost every time.Michael74 wrote: Mon Mar 03, 2025 1:00 amI don't think Beau gets us a 2hd even in '27, I could see a 3rd, preferably for '26.

A '26 1st is a must for us, beyond that it gets tricky.
That would put us at 48 contracts (Rakell out, down to 46...Laferriere or Spence plus Jeannot in, up to 48)
If we're trading Rakell, for me anyway it starts with a '26 1st. Although Greentree is intriguing I must say.
