Re: Official 2025 trade deadline
Longtime lurker here. But I think people are overreacting to Rakell not being moved. In fact, people overreact to "hockey holidays" in general. Trade deadline day and the first day of free agency: by the end of the day it's either time to plan the parade, or the team should just be dissolved for a dispersal draft. Rickard Rakell is a good player, but do you really think the future of the franchise hinges on him? Because some of you are acting like it does.

Re: Official 2025 trade deadline
I'd be tougher. All those low round picks basically mean squat. Maybe 1 in 10 of them will make it to the NHL on a regular basis.KG wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 3:32 pmTough grader.Puck-Lurker wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 3:28 pmWell, it fits Dubas modus operandus.
Desharnais for 5th in '28
Bunting + 4th for Novak + Schenn
Schenn for 2nd + 4th
Glass for 3rd
Beauvillier for 2nd (an extremely late one)
And nothing.
No Grzelcyk move.
No Heinen move.
No Acciari move.
No Rakell move.
No Karlsson move.
I'll give Dubas a B- or C+ depending on more details. He's very good at the small-ball but the big swings are either not done or misses.
EDIT: I'll give Dubas a C-
Sullivan is still here at the deadline.
The only player I would have moved that he didn't was Gryz. Acciari and Heinen have another year left on their deal. Nobody wanted them clearly. I wouldn't either.
Rakell and Karlsson could be moved over the summer. The team went from having no picks and prospects in the system 2 years ago, now we have the most picks the next 3 years. He's rebuilding the franchise.

Re: Official 2025 trade deadline
Lol - we aren’t going to draft using all those picks at these spots. It’s trade money. Currency we can use for NHL players that have panned out.Mad City Mike wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 3:36 pmI'd be tougher. All those low round picks basically mean squat. KD didn’t trade RR because he was worried Crosby would pout again.

Grzelyck should be moved, even for another 3rd rounder.. I wont be shocked if we re-sign him now in summer for 2yrs - 6M (because Sully wants him back)

Re: Official 2025 trade deadline
Pretty much where my mind is at too. I'm not too fussed about Desharnais, but confused Grz didn't get traded for a pick.FLPensFan wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 3:35 pmAs of right now, I'd give Dubas a B or B- on his trade deadline.
--He gets A grades on Beauvillier, Bunting/Novak, Glass and flipping Schenn
--He gets a C for trading Desharnais. Seems like a 4th (maybe even a 3rd) would have been attainable based on d-man prices.
--He gets a C for not moving Rakell. We have no idea what his ask was. We have no idea what other offers out there were. But based on what Nelson brought back, and even what Gourde/Bjorkstrand got back, it was a big sellers market.
There was some opportunity here to acquire a 1st rounder plus, for the bigger names in the club. (The ones a tier below Sid and Geno) Dubas didn't make any such moves, biggest name moving out was Bunting, in my B-tier.
If Dubas had pulled a rabbit out of his hat and moved someone you can't possibly move without much drawback (Graves, Jarry ...) that would've significantly bumped up my grade for him.
B- for trades
C- because he hasn't fired Sullivan by this year's deadline. (Not me being harsh, but being consistent if anyone needs to they can look it up lol)

Re: Official 2025 trade deadline
Very possible, which is why if we traded Crosby that issue would be solved. You need to put the team over any individual player. It appears as though we didn't do that. We'll see if Rakell is moved this summer and for what. I can't imagine it will be as seller friendly as this deadline however.Wyopen wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 3:40 pmKD didn’t trade RR because he was worried Crosby would pout again.

Re: Official 2025 trade deadline
So a random bottom pair RHD that isn't very good and a Sam Poulin clone. Why?!

Maybe this is taking roster spots and a little cap off of Toronto's hands for their pickups today. Maybe get a pick for helping them out.

Absolutely. Hey, we have 19 mid to late round picks between 2026 to 2031 so you know....success!Mad City Mike wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 3:26 pmThe organ-eye-zation is in no better shape than it was 24 hours ago. Or 48 hours ago. A little window dressing while really not accomplishing anything. The story of his tenure so far.

Yeah, they were in the red before. This would put them back to cap compliant, if capwages is to be believedDeHaven162 wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 3:49 pmMaybe this is taking roster spots and a little cap off of Toronto's hands for their pickups today. Maybe get a pick for helping them out.
Both RFA after the season.

Maybe the Pens are amassing Connors to form a giant Voltron Connor, hoping it will be similar to McDavid?

Seems like we got them for free. Probably retention. Both are RFA's. Timmins can play bottom pairing minutes.

Re: Official 2025 trade deadline
I'll go with a C.
I've come around a bit on the Bunting deal. Cheaper/younger and a little more upside, but also got softer.
Love the Beau & Glass values, can't complain.
Desharnais - meh, whatever.
For me, it's the lack of significant moves. Novak may end up being a decent player, but none of those transactions move the needle as far as a rebuild goes. Sure, we have a few more picks to use or trade, but it's more volume than value.
We still have to deal with EK, Jarry, Graves, Hayes, Acciari, & Heinen next season. Now we can add Rakell to that list if we want to try and extract any value from a 32 YO next season. That's a lot of (difficult) movement for one offseason. If it was unlikely that Rakell was going to be moved, he should have at least tried to move one of those big contracts or a few of the smaller ones.

Re: Official 2025 trade deadline
So, I'm reading that this was a three team deal, part of the Carlo deal. Toronto got Carlo, Boston got a 1st round pick and prospect Fraser Minten, and Penguins got Conor Timmins and Connor Dewar. I'm assuming Pittsburgh had to get something else in this deal to take those salaries off of Toronto's hands. Both players are RFAs at seasons end.Puck-Lurker wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 3:51 pmYeah, they were in the red before. Maybe an IOU? Or a Conor to be named later.
