Re: Official 2025 trade deadline
Yep, this is where I’m at. You can’t tell me that nobody made an offer for Rakell. And for the people talking about the “draft capital” we acquired today, do you think adding another 1st round pick would help or hurt that capital? Even if it’s a late 1st round pick, it holds a lot more weight than a couple of late 2nd and 3rd round picks. We had an opportunity to capitalize on one of the biggest sellers markets I can remember and we didn’t pull the trigger on our biggest asset. Beyond frustrating.Antonio wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 5:43 pmAnyone who seriously thinks no good offers were made is deluding themselves. Yeah...numerous teams made numerous deals with significant overpayment and high quality assets moved, but yeah...no quality offers or maybe even NO offers at all were made for a 30+ goal scoring winger with low cost multi year term left in a year where the cap is likely to surge in the future. Yup...keep telling yourself that "we just can't know!" We were the only team no one wanted to make a deal with...sure.
Maybe Dubious wanted to keep Rakell to help Sid with another point per game season? Sounds like the type of logic he’d use

He did have three of them for 2025, not sure which one, I'd imagine it wasn't ours but it's a fifth.
No idea why we paid for these dudes

Same. We gave up a 5th to help them clear contracts and cap space?

Timmins is serviceable. I don't hate it. We got a 4th for Ruhwedel, value wise this is better I guess.

I mean...who cares about a 5th but...seriously there is zero reason I can come up with to explain this. We took on YOUR dead weight, we added YOUR salary to help YOU....AND we sent YOU OUR draft pick? What is missing here?SteelCityFan wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 5:58 pmSame. A 5th for two guys who are NHL players isn't bad. If one becomes a regular you can flip them. We need bodies without disrupting the WBS team that is playoff boundAntonio wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 6:02 pmI mean...who cares about a 5th but...seriously there is zero reason I can come up with to explain this. I think Timmins is a pretty serviceable player. I don't view him as having negative value. This is an audition to see if he's deserving of a contract next season. Seems reasonable to me.Antonio wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 6:02 pmI mean...who cares about a 5th but...seriously there is zero reason I can come up with to explain this. Will agree to disagree with your last. But it's probably better to fire Sullivan first, before advancing youngsters to a more full time status in Pittsburgh.thehockeyguru wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 6:06 pmA 5th for two guys who are NHL players isn't bad. That does still require firing Sullivan.

Do the Mapleleafs own Tim Hortons? If so, maybe Dubis did them a solid by helping them today in exchange for clearing his donut and coffee debt...

Agreed. Don’t really care about the 5th, but it’s the principle of thing. There’s principalities involved here Smokey!!! - iykykAntonio wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 6:02 pmI mean...who cares about a 5th but...seriously there is zero reason I can come up with to explain this. Kind of sounds like teams called on Grzelcyk but never made an offer?

I took a look at the piece from The Athletic by Scott Wheeler on the New Jersey Devils released back in January.SteelCityFan wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 6:07 pmDamn. Their prospect pool is ranked 17th overall - Pittsburgh is 20th. Stillman is ranked 13th out of 14 players. Herman Träff, who was sent to the Ducks in the Dumoulin deal, was ranked 6th. Graham isn't mentioned.
Here's what he wrote about Stillman:
I’ve had real concerns about whether Stillman has the on-ice intelligence and finer tools to make it (despite a strong foundation of pro tools/pro style of play) for years. I’ve also often wondered about whether he’ll ever develop enough offense to progress and each season seems to reaffirm those concerns a little more than the last. Stillman’s an effective enough player, but I’m not sure he’s talented enough to be as effective at the pro level as he was doing his thing at the junior level. He’s physical on the forecheck. He’s got a motor. He’s feisty. He’s always in the mix. He’s strong on his feet and can make the odd play around the net. But he lacks any dynamic quality and I find him to be too deferential with the puck (he’s got fine hands and could hang onto it more than he does but seems to fall back into the chip-and-chase game as a mental thing). He does a lot of things well and he plays an endearing style, but he’s still being used as a fourth-liner in his second year in Utica, hasn’t progressed much (if at all, really) since the draft, doesn’t even penalty kill for the Comets and always topped out as an NHL fourth-liner for me even if he did take steps. It’s looking like they burned a first-rounder with this one. Could I see him working his way into some games on a fourth line in his mid-20s? Maybe. But he might also just be what he is as a depth AHLer.

With all these trades, how much cap space will the Pens have on July 1st. Thanks.

Re: Official 2025 trade deadline
Around 27 million with 15 players from the current roster signed: 9 forwards (Crosby, Malkin, Rust, Rakell, Hayes, Novak, Heinen, Acciari, Lizotte), 4 dmen (Karlsson, Letang, Graves, Kolyachonok) and 2 goalies (Jarry and Nedeljkovic)Wyopen wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 6:57 pmWith all these trades, how much cap space will the Pens have on July 1st. Of the forwards, Dewar, Tomasino and Bemstrom are RFAs and Imama an UFA.
On defense, Timmins, and POJ are RFAs, Grzelcyk and Shea are UFAs.
All of these 5 RFAs have arbitration rights.

Re: Official 2025 trade deadline
Qualify Tomasino, offer him something like 1.5M x2 or something. The rest, meh. Definitely don't QO Joseph to avoid a Kapanen situation.
Grzelcyk you could keep, if at same value or below. Watch him get a raise.
Bemström and Imama don't matter. Timmins and Dewar have a short window to prove they're worth a contract.

Too low for a UFA that we have no use for and hasn't played well all season?Victor wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 6:24 pmEither that or the offers were too low.thehockeyguru wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 6:12 pmKind of sounds like teams called on Grzelcyk but never made an offer?
If the best offer you had at 3pm today was a 5th or 7th, why not take it?
Or try something like Grzelcyk and a 4th for a 3rd. Or retain 50% and see if that helps. The spot frees up at the end of the season anyway.
Unless your best offer was Grzelcyk and a pick for future considerations (i.e. negative value), why not take it?

We have about 6 or so bottom pair guys plus Letang, Karlsson (who is a very niche top 4D at best).thehockeyguru wrote: Fri Mar 07, 2025 7:20 pmGrzelcyk is just miscast he's a bottom pairing guy.. Pickering probably has a higher ceiling that bottom pair, but he's in WBS and still growing as a player

Re: Official 2025 trade deadline
Do some of you actually think the Pens can challenge for the cup next year?
Of course not, they should have traded Rakell for the best offer they received. I don’t understand fans who WANT to make the rebuild take longer. This team has zero chance of competing for the cup for years to come. Winning should mean nothing for the next several seasons, go all in on the rebuild and we’re a competitive team sooner.
