I’m overall more than satisfied with today’s business. Albeit we should have moved Rakell now rather than later, but if KD feels like we can be a playoff team again and do a quick rebuild on the fly - then so be it.

I do think one of Karlsson and Gryzlyk has to go. My fear is Gryz is having a career year in points and they like him running the power play play, that they over pay and extend him.

He’s just not a good Defender and we need guys to play actual defense

Another bottom pairing guy. Like I said earlier Dubas needs to figure out what to do with Letang Karlsson and Graves. You can't bring everyone back when you've given up the most goals in the league

Shea's not the problem, he's a depth guy that can fit in a bottom pair role for stretches.

Fits neatly into the Chad Ruhwedel memorial spot.

You're right not pointing the finger at Shea its a good depth signing.

All I'm saying is its hard to retool on the fly when you need to replace almost your entire blueline

We have two of our three retention spots opening back up this summer, we can easily retain even 50% on EK if it gets us a better return and there will be teams that would want him at $5 million.

??? It’s more of the same, swing and a miss. This team will never compete for a playoff spot with this coach and these players and this system.

Overall have to credit Dubas with these moves today added to a few of the recent ones.
9 Total Picks in Rounds 1-3 in the 2025-2026 Drafts.
Beauvillier and Glass were not going to make this Team's Future any better and Bunting's Game is somewhat limited.Getting Draft Capital was productive IMHO.No issue with keeping Rakell here with his Salary.Rust isn't ever going to waive his No Move Clause so these 2 will be here next year.

The Young Group of Forwards in WBS (Kouvinen,McGroarty,Ponomorev,Broz) should continue to finish their promising Season with MacDonald developing their skills. No reason to have Sullivan and his System get in their heads right now.

The Decision on these Top 3 High Priced Underperfoming Defensemen (Karlsson,Letang,Gryzelyck) will have to be dealt with during the Offseason.Letang will never be moved so finding a creative way to deal Karlsson is a priority.Gryz returning is 50/50 but I'd rather they move on from him with his flawed Defensive Game. The continued expensive retooling of this Teams Defensive Corps has run its course.Having Pickering as a Top 4 Guy is a must.Developing Brunicke is highly important and needs to be taken seriously.St.Ivany should be in the mix next year.

Jarry needs to be jettisoned this Off Season.Point Blank this Goaltending Group cannot include him.Murashov,Blomqvist and Larsson have to be their focus.

The Scouting has to yield effective results with their Talent Evaluation over these next 2 Drafts. And Dubas has to be on Point with any acquisitions utilizing the amount of Draft Capital he has managed to get.

Do some of you actually think the Pens can challenge for the cup next year?
Of course not, they should have traded Rakell for the best offer they received. I don’t understand fans who WANT to make the rebuild take longer. This team has zero chance of competing for the cup for years to come. Winning should mean nothing for the next several seasons, go all in on the rebuild and we’re a competitive team sooner.
You never take an offer in any deal that is not the value you place on it. If you give in to them at the end, every person you do business with knows you will give in at and just wait you out. By not just “taking the best deal” other GMs now know that the value is the value and they know you won’t give in. Business is business regardless of the profession.

I do honestly feel bad for the fans who post here that spend so much time putting trades together on paper that never materialize.

Get Sullivan gone at the end of the season. Keep telling him that he really needs to focus on coaching Team USA to victory, unlike the 4 Nations series.

Junior Manager KD cut bait and brought in picks. I guess half a days work is worth something.

Some things I gleaned from the presser:

=He said teams kicked tires on Grzelcyk, but it doesn't look like anyone actually made an offer for Dubas to accept or reject.

=On Rakell, Dubas said there was quite a bit of interest. Dubas never said anything like "but we didn't get an offer we liked." He said there was heavy interest, but in the end, the team decided that the organization was better off keeping the guy that wants to be here, has term and can be successful here.

=On the future of this team, near the very end of the presser, he talked about how his goal is to give the core guys 1 or 2 more chances for a Cup. :? He did talk a little about different guys being on different contract lengths, and he included Rust and Rakell in that core group mix. My concern here is that they look to re-sign Malkin after next season to keep giving the core chances. That will be a mistake.

My concern with all of this is our top 2 centers are closer to 40 then 30, and our top 2 wingers our both on the wrong side of 30. As much as this team wants to get younger, they still tend "fall in love" with their own guys even when it likely isn't the best option.

Dubas has done very well with his moves this season compared to his first, but, how far have the moves he's made put us towards the end goal of getting younger (not by swapping a 32 year old for a 30 year kind of younger) and ready to compete sooner rather than later?

--McGroarty for Yager is a near-term win. McGroarty heating up, and should be on the NHL squad next year. Yager probably still 1-2 years away.
--Pickering play NHL games is a win. He should be on the NHL roster next season.
--Guentzel trade netting Koivunen is a win. At worst, Koivunen should be a mid-season callup next year.
--Drafting Brunicke is a win. If he plays over the summer and next camp like he did last year, at worst he should get a 9 game trial...if he doesn't force his way onto the opening NHL roster for longer.
--Murashov coming over to North America earlier than expected was a win. He needs a full year in the AHL next year, with the majority of the starts, at a minimum.
--Hopefully Tomasino and Novak turn out to be wins. They have the potential to do that.

Now when you look at that list, you should quickly realize that we are still missing top end talent. No guaranteed top 6 guys. No guaranteed top pairing d-men. Maybe our future franchise goalie.

Dubas needs to make some big swings with all that draft collateral they got. He needs to pickup a Nemec, Jiricek, Clarke type defenseman. He desperately needs to find a young NHL ready center....younger than Novak. Dubas said they will be surveying and hunting for opportunities to use their draft collateral for trades versus drafting.

Let's hope he finds some good deals, because this team needs it to get to the next stage of that quick rebuild.

I believe it is a mistake. I think that 2025 4th from Philly should be shown as going to Boston, not Pittsburgh. That pick is listed in the TOR to BOS part of the deal. It isn't shown in the TOR to PIT deal.

The official statement on the Penguins website says Penguins acquired Dewar and Timmins for a 2025 5th round pick. There is no mention of any pick coming to Pittsburgh.

It is on puck pedia, I think maybe we retained? I know it's not at capwages though, but they haven't listed Cody Glass yet with NJ. I think they are a little behind. I don't know though.

They're behind however, they haven't listed the Cody Glass trade yet either. I'm not sure, saw it on puck pedia. It said we got the Philly 4th in the TOR-BOS deal, maybe for retention.

That’s a great post, as always, FLPF! I agree 100% with the org tending to fall in love with their own players too often. They need to remember that this is a business first. Sometimes tough decisions have to be made for the benefit of the team.

The Pens have historically been successful when they acquired two of the greatest to ever player the game. Can they find success in the post-Crosby era without lucking into a generational talent?

I know, that is where I was looking. But if you look they 2025 4th you are saying went to Pittsburgh is only listed in the part of the deal between BOS and TOR. They don't list it as a 3 team trade. So, I think it is just a simple mistake on Puckpedia's part, especially since the Penguins official announcement on their site mentions nothing about a pick coming to them in that deal.

If you look on the PIT draft pick break down on that site it has us having two 4ths this year. It didn't make much sense to me either, but it's listed in two places. Again it's not a big deal, I just found that interesting.

But you left out $15mil in cap space with a substantially rising cap (where they are projected to have 29mil in space). They absolutely can do a retool but they need to run the table on who they add in the summer. The way he talked I could see them poach a RFA thus the need for extra picks.

Well, yeah, I actually forgot to mention the cap space. Dubas should have weaponized that better, and made offers to retain salary for additional picks.

We'll see what happens this summer. Need to see a draft day trade or two for a player, need to see a potential offer sheet. Need to see a nice UFA signing, although, going after someone like Boeser for example....he's outside the younger age that the Penguins really need. But someone like Boeser for 7x7 may be helpful.

Spoiler:
If you look on the PIT draft pick break down on that site it has us having two 4ths this year. It didn't make much sense to me either, but it's listed in two places. Again it's not a big deal, I just found that interesting.
Got it. I see what you mean. No idea why Puckpedia thinks we had that pick at any point.
It's probably a mistake, my bad. :(

Re: Official 2025 trade deadline

My read on KD press conference was overall positive. I think it was evident that he had a busy day; he was mentally tired.

He said all the appropriate PR things about Rakell.

He praised EK65 but did say they will see market in summer (I think EK65 will be traded this summer, moreso now based on press conference.) KD did "slip" and say he brought EK65 for one last go and it did not work.

He made it clear that he made tough decision to rebuild and it started with Guentzel.

He wants value. He likes having picks but he indicated he might use some for trade bait. He indicated not trading their 1st round this year. He has cap space now.

He dis say the goal is to compete for cups as soon as possible but also indicated it will take time. To me, he pretty much said next year ain't gonna be good. He does seem to think maybe before Crosby is done.

..........
I think the speed of the rebuild will depend on draft lottery this year and next year.

After watching press conference, I expect EK65 to be traded this summer. Maybe others. I expect more 1 year UFA signings and possibly take on some cap dumps. I think he will try to trade for higher end NHL ready player as well.
