What roster spots/lines/usage do you want to see now in the new regime
What specific line combos, usages etc would you specifically like to see under the new regime? Stuff like as examples, do you want to see player X PK or PP, a line of XYZ as line 3 and ABC as line 4, a specific player brought in to with a line with X and Y etc. Curious what stuff people would be interested in seeing that previously would have been impossible but they think could work or is worth exploring.

I'd like to see the PK go back to being more aggressive, and being a threat to score short-handed goals. It would also be nice not to give up so many SHG against.
Hoping to see Brunicke make the team, and I'd like to see a Pickering-Brunicke 3rd pair.

An experienced Veteran player and inexperienced young player have the same length of leash before being sent to the press box for chips and cheese. Maybe this is where the young player gets tripped up from eating chips and *cheese*, because they don't carry Veteran cash to eat more healthy before weigh in.
During post-game interviews, if a young player makes an impact on the outcome of the game, acknowledge the player and the play that was impactful. Confidence boost is free.

Re: What roster spots/lines/usage do you want to see now in the new regime
I just want to see youth movement continue and reset on D units and goalies depth chart thinned.
I think with forward lines we are already nicely set for next season, if we dont see any major trades or big UFA signing, which I doubt..
Koivunen, McGroarty, Hallander are almost fix to start season with big club and at least ONE out of Ponomarev, A.Hayes, Poulin, Puustinen, Broz to make roster would be pretty solid.
Need to trade Acciari, Heinen or waive..Hayes has big deal, he can play some 4th line minutes, he wasnt bad this year.
Koivunen - Crosby - Rust
McGroarty - Malkin - Rakell
Hallander - Novak - Tomasino/Blumel
Lizotte - Ponomarev - Dewar
x - Hayes
On D we need only one of EK and Letang, trade one.. trade Graves with retention if needed or trade him for other struggling player on similar contract. Maybe bring back Gryz IF we trade one of EK / Letang, Kris less likely..
D : Letang, Timmons, Shea, Pickering, Brunicke, Gryz and two new guys, first pair LHD and first pair RHD via trade or FA
Goalies wise - Jarry OR Ned need to go... Bring up Larsson or Blomquist! Make Murashov no.1 in AHL

I like your lines, P4L, though I think Broz will be in the mix.
We definitely need to move EK or Letang. And while Graves has generally been bad, I wonder if he can play better under a new coach/system.

I think there will be a lot of player movement this offseason, so it is difficult to get particular.
Sully clearly had a 'win the next game' approach. I think, for where the team is now, the new coach needs to have sights set on bigger picture. Yes, try to win (duh), but develop the team for long term.

Agreed 100%. The coach and GM need to be on the same page with regards to timeframe. It's no longer about playing Nieto 14 minutes while Ponomarev gets healthy scratched because the coach trusts veteran plugs. Next season's lineup has to include McG, Koivunen, Ponomarev, Hallander, Pickering, Blomqvist (or Murashov), maybe Brunicke. We still have plenty of veterans around to help them.100565 wrote: Wed Apr 30, 2025 9:35 amI think there will be a lot of player movement this offseason, so it is difficult to get particular.

I think the time has passed at his age now, but I would not have minded a seeing Crosby a the tail end of some PKs a few years ago. Mario was lethal on PKs back in the day.

Yep. I almost included that above when I mentioned a more threatening PK style.Antonio wrote: Wed Apr 30, 2025 9:56 amI think the time has passed at his age now, but I would not have minded a seeing Crosby a the tail end of some PKs a few years ago. Mario was lethal on PKs back in the day.
Also, I have been very "this season should be Malkin's last," and right now, I still believe it should be....HOWEVER, IF Dubas can acquire a legitimate, young 2C this offseason or by the trade deadline, and IF Malkin can put up another 15-20 goal, 50-60 point season this year....I would not be opposed to him signing a one year extension for maybe 3M to be the 3C in 26-27.
That's a lot of IFs, and would also depend on how some others work out (Novak, Broz), but I would say it is a remote possibility.

thanks FLPF for bringing up the idea of Geno returning for one more year after next. i also would not mind that if all your IFs are satisfied. there's a separate thread about Sid's dream point scenario and i have a personal one for Geno. my hope is for 1426 point eclipsing Trotts for 19th place. that's 80 more points and in my mind a beautiful place for him to end up.

Ageed, 14 freaking SHG in 1989Antonio wrote: Wed Apr 30, 2025 9:56 amI think the time has passed at his age now, but I would not have minded a seeing Crosby a the tail end of some PKs a few years ago. Mario was lethal on PKs back in the day.

To really understand the amazement of that feat (it's actually 13 SHG):
--Only 4 players in NHL history have scored double-digit SHG in a season. Lemieux and Gretzky each did it twice. The other 2 that hit 10 were Marcel Dionne and Dirk Graham
--All of those double-digit SHG seasons occurred in the 80s except for Dionne's, which was in the mid 70s.
--The highest SHG season by a player in the last 30 years was in 2001-2002. Brian Rolston had 9.
--There are a bunch of players tied at 7 SHG in a season. The most recent to hit that number was JG Pageau 2015-2016.
--The year Lemieux got 13 SHG, he also had 31 PPG. The record for PPG in a season is 34 by Tim Kerr. Draisaitl sits in 2nd with 32 in the 22-23 season. Lemieux at 31 PPG is tied for 4th with Nieuwendyk and himself (Lemieux also had a 31PPG, 8 SHG season).
--From what I can tell, Lemieux owns the top 2 spots for most PPG + SHG in a season, at 44 and 39.

Well back in the day forwards on the PK didn't attempt to block shots. I can see it now, Sid's on the PK, takes one off his foot. Prevents a SOG, but ends up missing 6 weeks because of a broken foot. Everybody here says WTH is Sid doing on the PK.

The defensive revamp will not be easy. I don't think you can go out and get a top defensive pairing via trade or free agency.Pens4Life wrote: Wed Apr 30, 2025 4:50 amI just want to see youth movement continue and reset on D units and goalies depth chart thinned.

I hope to get one thru trade for EK65, LHD or RHD and one via free agency, someone like Lindgren who we could afford under 5M..thehockeyguru wrote: Wed Apr 30, 2025 4:24 pmThe defensive revamp will not be easy. Don’t think Sid will ever reach those levels but agree that it would be fun to watch him on the PK towards the end every once in a while to put some fear in the opposition like Mario did. Just tell him no shot blocking.
