I actually heard Joy Division in McDonald's this morning.
A friend of mine suggested the Control movie to me. Maybe once things settle down and I get home, I'll have to give it a shot providing I can find it.
JD at McDonald's? Wow. I thought hearing Buzzcocks songs in Nissan and AARP ads was surprising.
You should check out Control. It's pretty good.
Yeah, it was a somewhat ironic order that they were played in. New Order "Blue Monday", then JD's "Love Will Tear Us Apart".
In McD's.
At 7am.
Ironic, in the sense that New Order technically came after Joy Division
I thought the Buzzcocks were in a VW ad. If it's the ad I'm thinking of, VW used "Fast Cars" a few years back, which may probably the worst song choice since Wrangler chose to use a 10 second clip of "Prodigal Son".
For those not familar with the song, and I'll admit that I like the Buzzcocks, is this a song that you want to represent your new cars?
They're nice and precise, each one begins and ends They may win you admirers, but they'll never earn you friends
Fast cars, fast cars
Fast cars, I hate fast cars
They're so depressing going around and around
Ooh, they make me dizzy, oh fast cars they run me down
Fast cars, fast cars,
Fast cars, I hate fast cars
Sooner or later, you're gonna listen to Ralph Nader I don't wanna cause a fuss, but fast cars are so dangerous
Fast cars, fast cars
Fast cars, I hate fast cars, fast cars
Fast cars, fast cars I hate fast cars
Of course, those parts were left out. It's been awhile since I've seen the ad, but I think there's some guitar and you can hear them say "fast cars" a few times.
What am I listening to now? Old stuff from my skate days:
Sub Society - A Lot Less
Plaid Retina - Plastic (sounds more like a cover of the earlier mentioned Prodigal Son, but that's how it's listed
H-Street Hokus Pokus - one of JS's favorite old school skate videos.

It's always weird to hear music in an entirely out-of-context setting. I once heard "Don't Know What You've Got Til It's Gone" while standing in line at the Wilkinsburg Wendy's. Irony at its finest.
Control was a pretty good flick, albeit somewhat lopsided in its casting Ian Curtis as solely responsible for the marital hardships they (he and his wife) endured. Then again, its based on the book she wrote after his death, so I doubt that if she did anything terrible to him it would have found its way in.
24 Hour Party People? Not so much. I thought The Happy Mondays were a terrible band, and they were pretty much the focal point of the movie. I feel like halfway through shooting, the director was like "Oh yeah, we should mention New Order at some point."
Admin, its cool that Minor Threat made your list. I just listened to Cashing In the other day, as well as some records from 3, Dag Nasty, and Hoover (some of the more obscure Dischord bands).
My last couple of days haven't been that bad. I've seen Sahara Hotnights, The Hellacopters, The Hives, Queens of the Stoneage, Foo Fighters and Rage Against the Machine.
Really liked QOTS, got to listen to them more. Foo Fighters were great. The show was a bit up and down but the last 45 minutes were sweet. Best gig, however, without a doubt was Rage Against the Machine. They were awesome, and the crowd's activity is the best I've seen. Everyone was jumping and singing along.
Radiohead makes great music. Especially There There
i say they "made" great music. now they make "pretty good" music
I think all bands face a ceiling or some sort of limitation on their ability to continually make great music.
I think the strength of radiohead is the diversity of their "greatest hits". If you compile a list of their best songs, the style and mood would deviate considerably. if you then consider a greatest hits from a band like weezer or the smiths the songs would all be good but they would all just be variations of the same style.
But that said, i don't care much for the last two radiohead cd's.

somewhere along the line, radiohead lost their soul. i think it happens with age. the bends, ok computer, kid a, amnesiac...those albums were full of fear, alienation, insecurity, angst, etc. there's only so long you can feel that stuff so strongly without considering checking yourself into a hospital. the band settled down. they're all family men, and instead of internal struggles in a confusing society, you get hail to the thief's unwelcome political posturing and the easy listening of in rainbows. i lost the connection.
Of late, the following bands have been part of my music fix:
Thin Lizzy (most underrated band of all time)
Opeth (older stuff)
Terry Reid
UFO
Daryl Hall and John Oates (their early-1970's stuff is really good)
Hawkwind
Cannibal Corpse (post-Chris Barnes)
Any mid-1990's Wu-Tang CD's ("Liquid Swords," "Return to the 36 Chambers," and so forth)
I heard "Walking on Broken Glass" in Sheetz today. Thought that was awesome. Surreal.
I've been scanning through a bunch of Paste cds I'm getting. Finally starting to get into female vocals more and more. But what I mostly listen to in slight order of how much I listen to it (all cds):
Elliott Smith
Bright Eyes
Radiohead (Just went to their concert in WV - my first ever concert unless I count a small gathering at a Joanna Newsome thing in Columbus)
Sublime - I'll never stop listening now and then
Blind Melon - still sometimes
Boa
Jack Johnson
My Morning Jacket
Wilco
Weather Report
Sufjan Stevens
Sia (Found her in a Radiohead tribute kind of album - then a few days later in a Paste cd (anxiety) and then her own cd at a starbucks...not really loving her cd too much though)
Jamie Cullum (took a long time but grew on me)
Pat Metheny
Wolf Parade
Death Cab
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
Flaming Lips
And a bunch of mixed artist cds friends have made me. And I'm sure some I'm forgetting

The Deadly Syndrome - Animals Wearing Clothes
Weezer - Possibilities
Foreign Born - Keep It All Inside
Vampire Weekend - M79
Flowers Forever - Dirty Dollar Bill
Evangelicals - Midnite Vignette
Swan Lake - The Partisan But He's Got to Know
Bonde de Role - Funk de Esfiha
Black Kids - I'm Not going to teach your boyfriend how to dance with you
Magik Markers - Last of the Lemach Line
i think there's talk of a new swan lake coming out. it would be nice if they could iron out the kinks from the first one and make something epic.
I like the Dan Bejar part from that song. All three of them have such distinct voices, i'm not a big fan of destroyer so i think he's best doing just back up vocals for them.
