i prefered the mcdonalds until they stopped selling heroin in the bathroom.
if i don't pack my lunch i usually only eat at subway or pita pit. the only real restaurant i ever go in downtown is the Golden Palace buffet at smithfield and Liberty. there is another location in oakland. not particuarly great, but not expensive and quick to get in and out.
another place a little further out that i like is the rivertowne pourhouse in monroeville. there are two other rivertownes (verona and n huntingdon) but they arent as nice and do not brew their own beer like the pour house. if you ever go to one order their soft pretzels.
Excellent place. I love their food.
As for downtown, like someone said, Fatheads has the best sandwiches. Too bad I only try to go there once, at most twice a year because I would die if I ate there all the time (and so would most of you).
tusca in the southside works i heard was awesome. i went to a tapas similar place on shadyside and it was not good at all.
my g/f took me to "green forest cafe" for my birthday. that place was freakin awesome. i love meat. and getting it cut off onto my plate was awsome. expensive but worth it. maybe 25 bucks? 28?

Did you go to La Casa? But if you like tapas i wouldtotally recommend Tusca. Their pizzas are terrific too as is the sangria
Like someone else said, Ruth's is excellent, but pricey. It is, by far, the best meal I've ever had though. If you are gonna spend over $100 on dinner, that is the place to go.
I was there with this girl one night for dinner and drinks, and she got the moldiest bun i've ever seen a restaurant serve...and not only that they were complete jerks to her when she sent it back....I havent really had much food from there, but the pizza does smell real good.
Doc's is gross. I wouldn't eat there if you paid me.
Walnut Grille on Walnut, right beside Doc's, is has much better food. The Pittsburgh Deli Company on Copeland has good sandwiches, too.
speaking of copeland girasole is a pretty good italian place and mercurios gelato right above it is delicious
mercurios is really good...just had that on sunday...
A new place my gf and I have been going to is OH YEAH on highland right by typhoon that was mentioned above. they have dave and andys ice cream with about 50-60 things you can get mixed in (i recently had their big lebowski ice cream with raspberries and brownies) and i reallly like it. its only like a block from where i'm living so thats nice and i like to say it OH YEAH!!!!
Del's in Bloomfield is a very good Italian place, but my favorite place in the Burgh is Church Brew Works. I doubt that qualifies as a "best-kept secret" kind of place anymore though.
I've only actually lived in Pittsburgh for two years and have a lot of catching up to do.

mmm...that does sound good, and i've jogged past that place so i know exactly where your talking about.....
I agree with almost all of the suggestions made so far. I'd also add The Library and Double Wide Grille on the South Side. The various Sharp Edge locations (four so far, I think) are unsurpassed in their beer selections. Willow on Camp Horne Road in the North Hills is an upscale place with very good food. The Tokyo Sushi Buffet on McKnight Road (next to Best Buy) has decent sushi and a good selection of hot food for not too much cash.

I was going to church weekly during the spring and early summer....if you saw a little white scooter parked right out in front that was probably mine...

Del's has excellent Chicken Diablo. And they have a nice little bar.
I don't think Church Brew Works has particularly good food. Beer is good, though.

I've heard about this all you can eat sushi buffet...i think i'd like to see just how much sushi i can eat.
Library has good beer....i went there for the wing special before and they have breading on them...thats a minus in my book.
